With Rhonda at the lake. Just when I was thinking maybe I was out of the woods with my back and hip pain, it's back this morning. Cramping in the hip, sore in the back, cramping and sore at the top of the quad. Same old stuff.

Yoga 21:00 [3]

2 PM

Gym 20:00 [3]

Out to the gym, but not really feeling it. A set of situps which stirred up my vertigo, then 4x10 back squats alternating with pull downs. And then back in.

Note

Got up at 3, checked on the eclipse a few times, then had the bright idea to just hang out in the hot tub and watch it. Got out there around 4. Pretty fine.
Alas, a 3rd straight day with vertigo in the morning. Fortunately, by the time I've been up for a while it subsides, and the hot tub in particular seems to be good for it.

Went down to Wooster Mtn with a green and a brown map, thinking I would probably do the green, but when I looked at the map, the 1:7500 looked so much friendlier than the 1:10000 that brown it was. And a good thing. I had a lot of trouble with the rocky footing, certainly any downhill I was very gingerly, and there were some pretty scary ones.

1. Started off in an embarrassing fashion. On compass to the stone wall, then along the wall, except when I came to the wall I stopped looking at the compass and just trotted along until I came to an unexpected marsh. Oops, wrong wall, 90 degree error. So that was probably 2 minutes right there.
2. Across the top of the hill, thinking I would come to the reentrant and work my way down there, but it was pretty thick and a jumble of little trails and I went down early. Really difficult picking my way down, saw the houses off to the left and knew I had to keep going. No difficulty finding the control once I got there.
3. Aimed for the trail junction and the trail going E, but got it wrong and got on the one going N, so cut over and eventually fought my way down to the trail I wanted, cut over before the stream and picked my way up the hill. No trouble finding the control once I was headed the right way.
4. Easy navigation, but a difficult descent from #3, and a long climb up the other side. Past the big rocky spur with its cliffs. Right to it.
5. This was the worst of the descents, and I ended up going across the reentrant way further down than I had intended. Came to a rocky knoll that was clearly not the right one, attempted to go NW to the right one, but somehow pushed myself NE, relocated again, still 100 M away from where I needed to be, finally decided to take the trail and that got me there, but then I was on top of the cliff so had to downclimb to get to the bag. Pretty awful.
6. W below the first set of cliffs to the big boulder, then up hill to the trail, around the marsh and up some more to the next trail, winding around to the junction SE of the control, and very easy from there, saw the stone wall to the N, the boulder in front of it and the flag, all from at least 100M away.
7. Down to the trail, past the marsh and along the stone wall. Got to the cliff and had to read the description. Oh. Western foot.
F Hugging the cliffs, L along the marsh, on the trail back east past the little bridge and then up along the E side of that marsh. Up the reentrant and then down the other side, saw it from a bit of a distance.

Beautiful open woods, long sight lines, but a bit too rocky and physically demanding for my current state of ability. Pretty happy not to have tried the green.

Gym 30:00 [3]
slept:6.0 weight:163.4lbs

Out in the gym for a weight workout, but while I was warming up with some floor stretching I had a couple of vertigo incidents, so cut it a bit short. Squats, pull downs, sit-ups (which induced some more vertigo). Squats were good.

Hike 31:24 intensity: (10 @0) + (5:49 @1) + (3:00 @2) + (21:07 @3) + (1:18 @4) 1.29 mi (24:17 / mi) +42m 22:02 / mi

Control pickup, all the remaining 15 controls. Some fumbling with flags, dropping a few and having to go back. Mostly right to them, although I missed the lone deciduous tree on the W side and wandered a bit. The only other one that was likely to be a problem was the small boulder cluster on the N side of the hill in the NE part of the map. I went right to it, but was a little tentative. Also picked up 20 pts worth of mylar balloons.

Mt Tom Brown course. Very nice course set by Phil. Physically pretty demanding, lots of sticks and deadfall, some very rocky hills. In excellent contact the whole time, which certainly doesn’t always happen. A nice visit with PG, who was helping out, and briefer visits with a lot of o-friends.

Noodling around at Sessions Woods, putting out controls. Some of the streamers had disappeared, and one of the points was a lot vaguer than it seemed when I was streamering a couple of months ago. Also a schlep back when I figured out that I had left a flag behind at the previous control.

Rough approximation of the workouts we used to do with Eric, but doing it together. Taking it a it easy after more than two weeks away from it. There’s a bit of a traffic jam around the Smith machine, what with us doing different exercises, but we worked it out. Anyway, glad B to get back to doing some back squats.
12 PM

Hike 1:29:23 intensity: (25 @0) + (35:23 @1) + (46:59 @2) + (5:23 @3) + (40 @4) + (33 @5) 3.0 mi (29:48 / mi) +241m 23:51 / mi
ahr:110 max:200 shoes: 2020 Blue Gel Kayanos

With Rhonda off to Litchfield for something different. Litchfield Land Trust trails between Prospect Mtn Road and Cathole Road, going up over the summit of Prospect Mtn and by an eponymous grove of gnarly old sugar maples. Some steep sections, quite a bit of rock, some wet sections, but overall a pleasant experience. On a nice fall afternoon we weren't the only ones there. I counted 9 adults, 3 kids and 6 dogs. 1 of the adults and 2 of the kids twice, as they were doing the loop between Cathole and the summit in the opposite direction of us. AOWN - a flock of 6 to 8 turkeys in the woods between the summit and the grove, and a tick on the back of my neck when I was driving home. On the drive home, went past Stony Brook GC, a place I haven't been in quite a few years.
