Event: WCOC BBQ and Meeting

Orienteering 29:40 [3] 2.35 km (12:37 / km) +140m 9:44 / km
weight:168lbs
Testing course A before the meet, now that the e-punches are out. Within a second or two of watch time all around, so pretty satisfactory. I was a little worried about the possibility of some drift in the times. Anyway, tried a few different routes, including through the laurel on #5 instead of the more sensible around on the trail.
Orienteering 25:12 [3] 2.1 km (12:00 / km) +105m 9:36 / km
Sprint B, including a rather significant boom on #5 getting off to the right while my mind was wandering.
Orienteering 23:28 [3] 2.1 km (11:10 / km) +105m 8:56 / km
Felt not too bad, so retry course B. Took a route over the top to both 5 and 6, which appears to be slower than the route Glen and others took. In particular, plan to run the E-W trail south of the line turned out badly, both because of the extra climb through laurel to get to the trail and because of the lousy attack coming in from the trail there. The other speedsters, Glen and Clint were a fair amount faster on #5 an #6. I made up time on them on #1, where having lived here long enough to know the micro-route down through the laurel came in handy, #3 - good microroute through generally green area to top of slash field, and surprisingly, #7, where I was clear of the gang by over 1:30. That too is local knowledge, knowing which invisible intermittent trail is the useful one.

Orienteering 1:40:00 [3]
Setting out controls. Mostly walking, and since I forgot the map, trying to remember which number went where. Not too bad since the numbers are consecutive, although I was not going in order.
cycling 1:30:00 [3] 22.6 mi (3:58 / mi)
Time is an estimate since I forgot to reset the clock on the bike computer. It takes one press to reset the distance, and then a second longer one to reset all screens, and I find it hard to remember I have more to do once I see the distance come up zero. Pleasant Valley to top of Sandy Brook and back. First ride in a long while, with Rhonda part of the way, although she turned back early. Started getting ouchy on my back with about 4 miles to go, so:
Note
Went to see Brian the physical therapist (and generally all around fine fellow). He gave me some electro stimulation, ultra sound, etc. And then I felt a bit better, and the trip to Yale had been working on me, so I headed off to Simsbury Farms to play golf. Not at all crowded, which was pleasant and went in to pay. Came out and it started to sprinkle, and then some hail and a full downpour for a while, so I waited a bit.

Folks in carts came driving in from different directions. When things broke I hopped out on #10 and in my current chaotic state got behind a tree, so had to hit a more lofted shot and ended up lying two on the near fringe. I'm walking to my ball and I see this elderly gent in a cart zooming down the fairway. He pulls up next to my ball, looks around furtively, and picks it up. I'm yelling at him, but it doesn't register until I get up close. Caught in the act he throws the ball down and starts asking me if I've seen his wife's wedge. A strange start to things, but I'm feeling pretty good and the course is open ahead of me - until I get to the 12th and see a foursome ahead lollygagging in the fairway. I play along behind, but the fun is sapping out of it. I had gotten pretty excited about an open course. Followed these guys at their leisurely pace through 13, and then couldn't take it any more, so came up with the plan to skip to 18, and then try 16-17-14-15 and in. If I were a minute faster it would have worked, but I finished 18 around the same time a foursome was winding up on 15, and so I was feeling a bit stuck. Headed back to 11 where I was behind a threesome of high school kids who were in no hurry, but played behind them, checking out the scene on three across the way, but no dice. A couple of nice shots this time on 12, but flubbed my nine iron and had another bogey there. I'd been checking out 14 while I was going up 12, and hopped over there while the kids were on 13 and clear sailing the rest of the way. Pars on 14 and 17, and bogeys on 15, 16 and 18 (second time). 17 was interesting. I hit my drive into the sun and had no idea where it was so hit a provisional, which turned out badly. Went up looking for my drive and found it perched nicely on the fairway, a PW away. So I hit my wedge, and as I hit it the rain came in again, and I'm now trying to see it through rain and sun, and again I have no idea where it went, but headed up to the green and there it was. Lipped out the birdie putt, but a hole full of pleasant surprises. A generally satisfactory experience, and minimum waiting. Since the 5 new swing ideas were causing so much chaos, I introduced another one, which seemed to be smoothing me out a bit toward the end.

Note
weight:169lbs (injured)
Iced my knee and back last night and again this morning, which seemed to work pretty well. Knee was noticeably less stiff, and back not as ouchy. A good plan to do this several times a day. The technique: flexible reusable gel ice packs. Lay on the floor with one under the back. Prop the offended knee on a large stability ball and wrap the other ice pack on with an ace bandage. Bring something to read, and a pillow to make reading more fun.
Orienteering 28:42 [3] 2.36 km (12:10 / km) +130m 9:32 / km
Test run on course A. No misses, but some unfortunate micro-routes, and feeling slow. Back is getting a bit better.

Tuesday Jun 19

Hike 1:00:00 [3]
weight:167lbs
At Peoples State Forest with Hazel and Rhonda, moving smartly. Back twinged a bit, but basically ok for hiking. Serious FDF activity. 21 kills, mostly while waiting for Hazel to swim at the stream crossing.

Not training for anything really, but the most tiring physical stuff I do. About an hour and a half sawing up some tree tops that were inconveniently placed into firewood length, and adding them to the pile to be split, which has grown to look like my plate at a breakfast buffet after an ultra. Then some mowing trails with my brush mower . I was navigating some gnarly stuff on a trail I haven't mowed in a couple of years and snapped the cable that controls the wheel drive - so it wouldn't go any more. Had to horse it down the hill and over some bumps to a place where I could drag it back up with the tractor. Tweaked my lower back in the process, so I am on restricted activity for a bit. Yard work has improved my g, however, as I am down about 6 pounds from the peak a month or two ago.

Sunday Jun 17

Event: Paugussett SP Local

Orienteering 1:42:00 [4] *** 6.4 km (15:56 / km)
spiked:11/15c weight:168lbs
Red course at Paugusset. Navigation went really well through #7, but then drifted a bit left on #8 at the end and couldn't relocate for a while. Then I got tired and sloppy. Pretty hot day.
Note
Lots of mowing - grass around the house, and then some of the trails. I like to mow the trails twice a year just to keep them honest. A fawn jumped out ahead of me running the route from #1 to #2 on the B course and exhibiting extremely fine form. Plenty hot by the time I was done - say two hours worth, and collapsed on the couch to watch Tiger's foibles.
