Took a tram out to the assembly area for the sprint qualifying race at Kadriorg Park and walked around a bit with George and Rhonda. Met a nice British couple, Ian and Monica Cooper on the tram back. Then home for a bit of lunch and out again to go with Rhonda around the model map, walking and talking. Periodically George and Leslie came running by.

Home, get a few things together and then out again, down the hill with Rhonda to the Rimi grocery store just N of Old Town. When we came out it was pouring! Waited a bit until it slowed down, but then it started again and we got well soaked. Puddles were a foot deep by the time we got up to our apartment.

Our last morning in lovely Vilnius. After breakfast Rhonda and I walked around town for an hour and a half or so, to Cathedral square and the statue of Gediminas, through the wonderful gardens at the Bernardino park, so beautifully maintained, across the Vilna into Uzipis, artist's colony and independent republic with a remarkable constitution posted in 23 languages on stainless steel plaques along the street. Then back across the river, through town hall square and another loop past Cathedral Square in search of a bakery. Very pleasant town.

Now on the excellent Lux Express bus to Riga. Tickets bought far enough in advance were 5€. The bus is very comfortable, beautiful scenery. Very nice way to travel. Quite the best bargain I've run into. We'll be taking it again Friday to Tallinn. 5 more euros. Amazing.

Another interesting site we visited the other day was the Frank Zappa memorial. Pretty unusual statue, but there are quite a few quirky things around town.

Note

An hour and a half or so walking around Old Town Riga with Rhonda and Leslie on the sprint map Dennis found on the web. More city-like than Old town Vilnius, more activity, but a beautiful and interesting town with many appealing restaurants.

In Vilnius. Our hotel is quite small, but pleasant enough. It comes with breakfast, but the breakfast is at a larger hotel a few blocks away. Breakfast is in the cellar, two floors below the street. The hotel is from 1561, and the cellar is stone and brick. Great buffet. I had eggs, bacon, sausage, salmon, shrimps, a couple of chicken things, pork loin with prunes, a couple of kinds of local cheese, fruit, and so on. Maybe half the available things. Really good. Then a nice walk around town. More later.

Dennis, Louise and Marie-Josee got in at 2:30, George and Leslie around 8.

Long travel day. Finally at our hotel in Vilnius in lovely green Lithuania. Some rolling to get the kinks out, then out to explore in the morning. I slept more on planes than I usually do, but not at all comfortably.
