At Stanclift, with Rhonda, relaxed pace. Saw a head sticking up out of the water and approached to see a very large snapping turtle swim away, the water clear enough to watch him swimming. Very nice. Also a cormorant, lots of songbirds, a few shorebirds, lots of dragonflies. Not very windy this morning.

One dog loop, very humid. Not as stiff today, but the legs were feeling tired. Thinking about bears on the way around, since there have been two sightings of the big guy this week right on the path I was running.

Just to keep me in practice, I saw another large bear in Avon today, walking through the parking lot at my doctor's office. A city bear, I guess, feeding on dumpsters rather than on defenseless peach trees.

Around the ann loop with Rhonda and then we came back to a lonely looking dog, so took her on the hospital loop and stopped off to watch her eat apples for a while. She is packing on the weight, as it is a fine year for apples here.

At Lake McDonough, including a little research to see if there was a way around the apparent island at the SW corner of the lake. There was a narrow channel about 100 ft long with a fallen log across either end. Scrunched myself down and got under the first one, but not enough clearance for the second, so a mini-portage as I stepped across the log and pushed the boat under. A very sparky headwind on the way back. Rhonda was disappearing in the distance. Certainly plausible that she is a fair amount stronger, but I think my boat being taller and heavier may be a factor in a headwind, too. relive.

Note

We were just leaving to meet our friends Mike and Cindy for dinner in Bantam when Zack spotted a very large bear trotting around in the middle field, heading left for a while then turning back right and shambling in the general direction of the apple trees. Probably in the 350 to 400 range. I came outside and he fixed me with his best "who the hell are you" stare, and then I devised the plan to get in the car and go drive over an harass him away. Turned out the car was locked! That almost never happens here. So by the time I get a key and unlock it, drive out to the apple trees, he has ripped off half of the smallest apple tree and moved on to our peach tree, stripped all the peaches and smashed the tree to the ground. The peach tree is only a couple of years old and was straining under the weight of about 10 very nice peaches. I had looked at them this morning and decided to give them one more day before taking them into the house.

Anyway, dinner was good. Arethusa.

Note

Cousins party, with me and Matthew, our cousin Brenda and family and our cousin Larry and his wife. Quite a gathering. Larry is Brenda's half brother. We just connected with Brenda last year through genealogical research. Larry I haven't seen since he was a kid, and he is 65 now. Matthew knew him more than I did, but also hadn't seen him in many years. Rhonda did her customary culinary magic.

Note

In bed fairly early before company arrived. Fazli around 9:30, Matthew and Ching-Hua around 10:30, so I got up and watched the ball game with the boys. I don't often watch them because they start so late. Anyway, pretty satisfactory conclusions, a bit of a seesaw with the Red Sox emerging victorious 3-2 in 10 innings. At least more satisfactory for me and Fazli who favor the Sox than for Matthew and Jake who favor the Yankees.
