Brown course at Ansonia NRE. Some fumbling and confusion on the way to #1, getting confused by what seems to be an extra stone wall. Eventually back to the trail, where I ran into Bill, who had started 2 minutes after. Found the reentrant from there, but didn’t see the bag. Now really confused I kept going, then looked back at where it had to be and saw it. The rest was pretty uneventful. I did get on the wrong ridge going to 4, but crossed over at just the right moment to find it, so no harm done.

Back was pretty sore, much worse after standing around helping at registration after.

Bill drove and was good company. Afraid I wasn’t as good company, as I nodded off for a good bit of the ride home.

Reevaluating tomorrow and I’m now thinking I will not go to Mt Lakes. Alas.

A fair amount in the yard today: Roto-tilled the vegetable garden again. A lot of leaves had been blown into it and I thought it would be reasonably easy to till them in, but the machine kept bogging down and I had to go over it about 3 times.
Then spread some winter rye, which may or may not germinate this late.
Emptied all the potted plants, well past their prime, and then took R on a walk down to the NE corner of the property and back.

This morning's visitor. He came strolling through the garden and around the house, down toward the road, then made another identical pass about 10 minutes later. A fairly substantial fellow.

A little laurel wrangling, building up another pile, this one near the gate on the trail from the back field to the clearcut. We had chipped the last pile down in the clearcut a few days back.

Rototilling the garden. I tweaked my R hamstring yesterday, possibly pushing a wheelbarrow of stone up from the garden. At the time it just felt like good exercise, but started to ache later. We'll see.

Really interesting walk at our forester's place in Sharon. He has about 140 acres or so, several different cuts ranging from 8 years old to 25, and some pretty careful management since. Some beautiful trees growing, Lots of white birch and red oak, but otherwise a diverse hardwood forest. Then we went in for lunch. His living quarters are on the second floor and you go in and climb a stairway that has a lot of taxidermy on it. Two full grown mountain lions, one from Montana and one from New Mexico. A black bear from Maine and a dear head with an impressive rack from his own property. Another bear has been turned into a rug in the living room. Not something I would do myself, but interesting to see.

And a beautiful property, views in all directions.
