Rowing Machine 9:24 [3] 2.0 km (4:42 / km)
slept:7.0 weight:170.5lbs

Hike 1:41:32 intensity: (8:41 @0) + (1:28:38 @1) + (4:13 @2) 5.24 mi (19:23 / mi) +109m 18:12 / mi
ahr:94 max:123 shoes: 2023 Salomon Speedcross

With Rhonda at the lake. I was feeling a bit tired this morning, and the last mile of this got my back acting up. So from here out a rest day.

Friday May 24 #

8 AM

Rowing Machine 14:25 [3] 3.0 km (4:48 / km)
slept:7.0 weight:170.7lbs shoes: 2020 Merrell Trail Glove 5

This recent spate of rowing got me thinking about my old friend chitown, who was quite an enthusiast of the sport. He used to think my times were quite impressive, but he was 6 years older. So I went back and looked at the times he was rowing back when he was my age. He did 9:07 for 2K at age 77, so not that much off the best I have posted at this age.
9 AM

Note

At the beaver pond with R & L. Quite pleasant sitting on the bridge. Listening to the birds. American Redstart, Red-winged Blackbird, Common Yellowthroat, Veery, Red-eyed vireo, song sparrow, Eastern wood pewee. GB Heron perched on a snag in front, and another one on a nest a little further out.

Saw this cute little guy on the trail. Somehow the dog ran right by it.

11 AM

cycling 1:17:21 intensity: (1:38 @0) + (16:36 @1) + (45:23 @2) + (11:38 @3) + (2:06 @4) 19.2 mi (4:02 / mi) +168m 3:55 / mi
ahr:117 max:145

Longest ride of the year so far, and went quite well. Beautiful day. Went up to the new bridge on Sandy Brook Rd and just past, to Pisgah Mtn Rd before turning back. The bridge is remarkably substantial for a bucolic country road, and even more alarming, poor little old Sandy Brook, minding its business for centuries, has now been designated "Sandy Brook River". Kind of a silly name anyway, but now Sandy Brook must have something to live up to. Looking along the brook between there and the next bridge two miles downstream there is not a stretch of 50 feet where a reasonably active elderly gentleman couldn't walk across on rocks. So not all that much of a river.

Note

Went to the hardware store, where I encountered my old trail running and cycling buddy Al Mitchell. He has been working there part time for many years now. Hadn't seen him in a while. He still looks strong, but old age has been hard on him, as he is just about to turn 80. He doesn't ski or bike anymore - doesn't trust his balance, and the last time he tried skiing he had a serious accident, fractured his pelvis and collar bone. So now he says he does the rowing machine 45 min a day and the stationary bike the same. We also talked of our old friend Tony Weisgram, whom Al sees from time to time. The three of us were constant trail running buddies in the 80s, Tony the most capable of us. I haven't seen Tony in about 20 years now, the last time at that same hardware store, where both of us were customers. Tony is a math teacher, apparently still doing it somewhere in his early 80s.

Note

Down to the beaver pond with Rhonda and Luna, listening to birds with our Merlin app - quite a nice variety. The green frogs are in season, booming away.
8 AM

Hike 47:54 intensity: (12:00 @0) + (25:15 @1) + (9:31 @2) + (1:08 @3) 2.71 mi (17:41 / mi) +143m 15:11 / mi
ahr:96 max:134 slept:7.5 weight:172.4lbs shoes: 2023 Salomon Speedcross

Around the block with Rhonda. She's had a sore back the last few days, so going a bit slower than her usual pace. But she seems to be improving.
12 PM

Rowing Machine 14:13 [3] 3.0 km (4:44 / km)
shoes: 2020 Merrell Trail Glove 5

Including a ten stroke pickup every 500 M.
1 PM

Orienteering 23:28 intensity: (2:30 @0) + (19:53 @1) + (30 @2) + (35 @3) 1.03 mi (22:47 / mi) +30m 20:55 / mi
ahr:95 max:137 shoes: 2023 Salomon Speedcross

Testing course B. Things are a bit thick out there, and maybe thicker in a few weeks. Seems a little too long and hard for what I am looking for. I did stick to woods routes to see what it was like. Trails would be friendlier.
2 PM

Orienteering 19:36 intensity: (9:27 @1) + (4:22 @2) + (1:09 @3) + (1:56 @4) + (2:42 @5) 0.91 mi (21:32 / mi) +60m 17:53 / mi
ahr:117 max:173 shoes: 2023 Salomon Speedcross

Course A. Definitely more the feeling I am looking for, but maybe still a bit long and steep, so a few more changes. Taking out a couple of controls and several contour lines.
4 PM

Orienteering 18:20 intensity: (2 @0) + (12:23 @1) + (1:51 @2) + (1:56 @3) + (1:49 @4) + (19 @5) 0.92 mi (19:55 / mi) +28m 18:12 / mi
ahr:109 max:171 shoes: 2023 Salomon Speedcross

Revised course B. Much better.

Pilates (Flow 1.0) 50:00 [3]

Tuesday May 21 #

7 AM

Gym 10 [3]
slept:7.75 weight:174.3lbs

5 push-ups. There had been a consensus of my well wishers that this was not a good idea, but I felt my shoulder had gotten strong enough to take it, so a little private session. It was fine. Certainly a year ago I wouldn’t have tried it, or even six months ago, but it was feeling recovered enough for this modest activity.

Pilates (Flow 1.0) 50:00 [3]

10 AM

Note

PT visit with my new guy George. He was the first person I’ve seen who had something to say about my knee that makes sense to me. He looked at my feet and listened to my story, said the problem with my toe is putting a lot of pressure on the muscles of the shin, and he taped it with kinesiology tape, and is suggesting orthotics. He has plans for my back, too.
1 PM

cycling 47:53 intensity: (16 @0) + (5:43 @1) + (34:30 @2) + (6:53 @3) + (31 @4) 12.3 mi (3:54 / mi) +56m 3:50 / mi
ahr:119 max:140

This went pretty well, certainly better than expected. Tape on my lower leg seemed to help.

Monday May 20 #

9 AM

Rowing Machine 8:48 [3] 2.0 km (4:24 / km)
slept:7.5 weight:172.4lbs shoes: 2020 Merrell Trail Glove 5

Seems like this is doing my leg some good, and so far hasn't been bad on my L forearm, which is the usual weak link for this activity.

Sunday May 19 #

8 AM

Hike 59:53 intensity: (30:53 @0) + (27:46 @1) + (1:14 @2) 3.04 mi (19:42 / mi) +153m 17:02 / mi
ahr:85 max:119 slept:7.5 weight:172.6lbs shoes: 2023 Salomon Speedcross

With Rhonda, Sheryl and Karen around the neighborhood/
11 AM

Rowing Machine 8:58 [3] 2.0 km (4:29 / km)
shoes: 2020 Merrell Trail Glove 5

Rowing Machine 1:52 [3] 0.5 km (3:44 / km)
shoes: 2020 Merrell Trail Glove 5

Don't think I've tried to go fast in quite a while. Looking back I see a 1:47 in December 2022. Anyway, this was hard, but went better than I had expected.
