Note

Long day. In Providence with Rhonda, Jess and Cooper yesterday and today for Coop’s hockey tournament. Walked around a bit in the morning. I spent five days a week here in 2002, and it sure looks different today. A little disorienteering to see the occasional familiar place, and then a lot that’s bigger newer and unfamiliar. Quite a nice city, and can’t really think of another American city I like better.

Then off to the game, at a big hockey installation in Attleboro. Coop’s team won yesterday, but they were outmatched today - kids who were faster and better stick handlers, one in particular who seemed to have the puck on a string. They were down 2-0 in 30 seconds, 3-0 by 3 minutes, but somehow played them even the rest of the way to lose 6-3. A moral victory of sorts.

Home by 5:30 only to find there was a memorial gathering for our friend Tom’s daughter who died a few weeks ago. Don’t know the circumstances, but she was a sweet kid whom we knew well when she was younger. Anyway, we hustled down to the local bar where this was going on, visited a bunch with Tom, and saw some of our mutual golfing buddies, whom I hadn’t seen since I stopped playing ten or so years ago.

Got home pretty tired.

Yoga (R's morning class) 35:00 [3]
slept:7.25 weight:170lbs

First time in quite a long time. This used to be a regular MWF ritual at 5:30, but with pandemic, people moving away, and various ailments and surgeries of the principal players it has been quite a while. Trying to reconstruct, it seems that it was already in decline in 2018, and extremely sporadic after that. Noticeably gentler and less sure-footed than in the old days, but good to see it starting up again. With Karen. Not sure if anyone else will be able to come.

Gym (weights) 15:00 [3]

As long as I was out there, 3 rounds of machine presses, machine pull downs, back squats, knees to elbows.
11 AM

Rowing Machine 8:39 [3] 2.0 km (4:20 / km)
shoes: 2020 Merrell Trail Glove 5

This felt pretty hard.

Pilates (Flow 1.5) 50:00 [3]
slept:7.0 weight:169.3lbs

Leah seems to be cutting back her schedule, which will lead to me cutting back mine, too. I don't find any of the other current instructors very interesting, and getting closer to the end than the beginning of my tenure with these classes. If she leaves completely, I think I will, too.

cycling 14:04 intensity: (5:50 @0) + (8:06 @1) + (8 @2) 1.94 mi (7:15 / mi)
ahr:88 max:109

With Rhonda at PV, trying out her bike for the first time since her accident last July. Some difficulty getting on and off, but otherwise reasonably successful. It may be a while before she gets her cycling confidence back. So out and back a mile. Practicing stopping and starting.

cycling 55:42 intensity: (28 @0) + (4:31 @1) + (38:52 @2) + (9:57 @3) + (1:54 @4) 13.3 mi (4:11 / mi) +196m 4:00 / mi
ahr:120 max:143

Off by myself in W Simsbury after dropping R off at home.

Note

Tried to jog a dog loop, but only got about 100 yards. Knee wasn’t having it.

Note

Longish perambulation with Zack and Luna. Should have had the watch on to record where we were. Down Derby Rd to the eastern edge of our property, then wandering around in the part on the far side of Little Down Marsh. Some very open sections of beech forest. Would be fun to expand the Ratlum Map to include it. Went by a couple of Steve’s tree stands, didn’t see his camera. But maybe it saw us. Then back along Derby Rd to pick up the far end of the dog loop and dive into the marsh inside the loop. Zack was on a hunt for black gum trees. He was not disappointed. Sloshed through the marsh, came out by the little pond, and then home. Pretty wet.
3 PM

Running 20:39 intensity: (6 @0) + (9:18 @1) + (7:53 @2) + (2:41 @3) + (41 @4) 1.33 mi (15:32 / mi) +48m 13:57 / mi
ahr:112 max:144 shoes: 2023 Salomon Speedcross

Kind of a struggle.

Running 7:01 intensity: (31 @1) + (3:23 @2) + (1:29 @3) + (59 @4) + (39 @5) 0.42 mi (16:42 / mi)
ahr:127 max:153 shoes: 2023 Salomon Speedcross

3 straightaways, walking back. 30.5, 26.7, 25.4. Not bad.

Orienteering (course testing) 15:44 intensity: (20 @0) + (11:54 @1) + (2:55 @2) + (3 @3) + (22 @4) + (10 @5) 0.93 mi (16:55 / mi) +29m 15:26 / mi
ahr:101 max:158 slept:7.0 weight:171.4lbs shoes: 2023 Salomon Speedcross

Course B. I was thinking that 16 min for me would be a reasonable standard. No wasted effort with map, compass, dipstick, glasses. Fast guys will be faster than this, but they at least have to look at the map.

Orienteering 16:03 intensity: (15 @1) + (2:05 @2) + (2:07 @3) + (3:47 @4) + (7:49 @5) 0.85 mi (18:53 / mi) +42m 16:21 / mi
ahr:145 max:169 shoes: 2023 Salomon Speedcross

After walking back and forth for maybe 3 minutes. A few stops: picked up a chewed up old Busch beer can on the way to #3, then dropped it twice, once between 6 and 7, once between 7 and 8, then turned the wrong way briefly on the trail from 9-10. Maybe 15 seconds in all. Just jogging, but it's humid and it's unaccustomed effort.

I replaced the KT tape on my lower leg this morning. It seemed not to be all that effective by yesterday, and was a lot more help with new tape today. So maybe 2-3 days is a reasonable horizon for it. My back is still tender, but much improved compared to yesterday.
