Note
Doing "my duty" by driving my Dad about 700kms on a round trip from Goolwa to Cobdobla! To see a "Humphrey's pump," in action.
However on arrival we found out it wasnt operating due to mechanical reasons - being that the gas emissions had caused several volunteers to collapse on a special corporate open day 2 weeks ago! (I had checked about it 3 weeks ago!)
Could still view it and lots of other machinery and it had a bit of a museum, so I pushed Dad around to look at all them.
Also 1 of the vollies was Doug Fieldhouse, who had taught me (and the rest of my uni PE class how to waterski at Robe many moons ago.
His daughter Sue was a champion water skiier, in my year and was a good friend, but tragically got killed in a car accident. This year the local council has just named the Barmera water ski ramp after her and noted.
"During the course of her water skiing career she won a total of 13 Australian Open Women’s Titles, which consisted of 9 Slalom Ski titles; 2 Trick Ski titles and 2 Overall titles.
Sue also represented Australia at 3 World Championships, winning 1 Silver and 3 Bronze medals in the Slalom event.
In September 1981, Sue set a World Record in Slalom skiing at the World Championships in London, England, and achieved international recognition of her great skills. She also held the Australian Women’s Slalom Record from 1974 until 1990, when it was finally broken.
From 1977 to 1982 Sue also won 6 straight Moomba Masters Slalom titles and she was also South Australian State Champion 11 times, between 1971 and 1982.
Tragically, Sue Fieldhouse was killed in a car accident in 1983, as she was returning home from a skiing tournament near Albury, cutting short her illustrious career. She was only 28."
