mt bike 7:05:00 [3] 124.0 km (3:26 / km) +1192m 3:16 / km

Barossa Valley Gravel Grind ride - organised by a guy from up that way.
Just 9 of us at start - 1 broke spokes early on and 1 shortcutted to Greenock.
All others were men on gravel grinder bikes - no other mtb.
I stayed with them until 30kms ... then took my time a little more and stopped for photos etc. Talked to a farmer's wife near Freeling; friends at Kapunda and a farmer at the Fromm ruins near Gomersal.
Guys were 30 mins ahead of me at Nuri - just finishing a late lunch at nice café attached to supermarket off main street going west.

Gawler - Roseworthy - Freeling - Kapunda (50km)
Greenock - Nuriootpa - Tanunda - Gomersal - Lyndoch - Gawler.
20kph average to Kapunda (50kms with tailwind and 420m of climb) - 3hrs 10
15.1kph av Kapunda to Nuri (?) was 40km & 437m climb - 2hrs 38
Last 14kms from outskirts of Lyndoch (near caravan park) took 49mins (seemed longer..I was tired) av 16.4 and climb of 151metres.

I didn't need gels - eat 2 bananas; finger bun, toasted sandwich and a handful of jelly babies. Gatorade & iced chocolate.
Lucky that weather was only 24 degrees.
Had no ipod which would have helped.
Almost 9 hours from start to finish - 7hrs riding, so photo stops etc soon add up. 30 mins lunch; 15 mins Kapunda, 5 mins shop in Nuri
Stopped 3 x to check on Ashes cricket score on phone - Steve Smith got his century and Aus drew a very boring test 4.

Road Cycling 3:33:00 [3] 70.0 km (3:03 / km) +1052m 2:50 / km

Morning ride with Michelle after hardly any sleep due to hot 38 degrees yesterday. Even though it cooled down overnight there was no breeze so house was still hot. So again lethargic.

I had shouted myself a Xmas present of updating my bike with electronic gearing and a smaller cog at the back. This is to overcome my arthritic fingers which had made changing into the big chain ring hard. Costly but not as expensive as a new bike. Would have liked disc brakes too but my bike isn't set up for this unfortunately.

Up Norton, Ashton, Mt Lofty, back down to Summertown, Uraidla and then across and up to Piccadily and Crafers. Down freeway and an extra climb up Glen Osmond and then to Glynburn rd...visited 3 cafes before finding a 4th that was open at Payneham. At Glydne corner there now is Meow, where you can pay $ to fondle a cat per half an hour whilst having a coffee!!

Unusually tired afterwards....perhaps I'm allergic to my house after all!

mt bike 3:00:00 [3] 36.0 km (5:00 / km)

Picked up a hire mt bike at 8am (despite shop not being open ) and rode 2km to the Sugarbag rd mtb park.
After an allnight thunderstorm & 17,000 lightning strikes the track held up well as sandy base.
The club has a great carpenter as there were numerous wooden features set in the air to ride over. Also A & B lines.
Tracks were all handmade so a bit scrappy.
Little easy riding and after not much sleep last night i was feeling lethargic.

mt bike 40:00 [3] 12.0 km (3:20 / km)

Ride to town & around and then to bike shop to return bike.
Get picked up by airport shuttle bus at 5.35am tomo as homeward bound.

Road Cycling 1:50:00 [3] 42.0 km (2:37 / km)

Out again before 6am and rode with 3 girls from Wofil for 20km and predictably i had a flat back tyre just after we went seperate ways.
So that took a bit of time shortening my planned 50+km ride as i needed to get back early to coordinate our kayaking expedition
Later in day returned hire bike.

kayaking 40:00 [3]

Kayaking over to Bribie island and around.
Did some in a single and some in a triple as 8 of us were out there. Bit windy.
Would have liked to have done more but had to play throw and catch for 90mins in the water.

swimming 30:00 [3]

Token swim time.

Saturday Dec 23, 2017 #

walk 40:00 [3]

Walking on golf course with kids and fished 15 balls from the water.

swimming 20:00 [3]

Actual swimming and running in water as i had the pool to myself.

Road Cycling 3:18:00 [3] 81.0 km (2:27 / km) +265m 2:24 / km

Group ride with bike shop peleton to Maroochydore and back. Quite fast to Buddina & Pt Cartwright on gd rds.
Then slow thru Mooloolaba, Alexandra Headland, Cotton tree to Sunshine highway over the Maroochy River as alongside the beaches, cafes etc.
Nicklin highway very busy on return.
Did a few extra kms at end exploring streets of Pelican Waters that i havent been in before.

Friday Dec 22, 2017 #

Road Cycling 2:39:00 [3] 53.0 km (3:00 / km) +224m 2:56 / km

Left at 6am and rode north on mostly big roads to Mooloolabal. Had some slower bits alongside the beaches. Huge amount of traffic on my return.
Out to Point cartwright on fast rds = 22.5 average for 24km...51mins.

swimming 30:00 [3]

Mostly treading water.

walk 30:00 [3]

Walk during 6 holes of golf.
My first hit of golf for some years.
Not gd for sore fingers and stirred up R wrist too. Many kangaroos on course.no

Road Cycling 4:02:00 [3] 81.0 km (2:59 / km)

Roadie ride east & north of Pelican Waters starting at 5.15am. Have to sleep with blind open as so warm, so i woke at sunrise.
Everyone rides early here to avoid traffic and heat. I found traffic very dangerous on open roads. One new suburb had fantastic biketracks.
For some reason the early part of my ride suddenly went from 24km to 1241 kms at 181km average on my garmin..

swimming 30:00 [3]

I was in the pool mostly playing with kids for 2 hrs. Lots of treading water.

Road Cycling 4:21:00 [3] 74.0 km (3:32 / km) +1204m 3:16 / km

Bad day...
Met MC for a shortish ride as she needed to be home by 11.
Only 22 degrees at 8am on a 38 degree forecast day so a nice start.
Straight away I felt lethargic in the legs but otherwise ok but MC was leaving me for dead. We joined the multitudes going up Norton and though I was going slowly there were others slower. At the top I told Michelle to go on alone as I was holding her up.

Contemplated what to do & decided to go to Mt Lofty and reassess.
As I ascended to the saddle at Ashton there were a lot of young guys and 1 woman waiting. One was Shaun Lewis, 1 SA's top xc & cx guys whom I have known for 15 years or so. He called out my name and had a great chat for a few minutes which was appreciated.

Saw a few friends at Mt Lofty and it was still coolish so decided to go to Mylor. Soon afterwards I began to feel shitty - headachy, light headed...
So spun my wheels - Heathfield - Leslie Creek Rd - Mylor.
Had a sandwich there and regained the climb up Aldgate Valley rd - Stirling - Crafers - Summertown - top of Greenhill rd - Norton Summit and home via Morialta Park playground.

It was 33 degrees by the end and after the top of Greenhill I didn't see another rider ...they all had fled home. at Summertown I rode with some guys from the Poseurs group ...all in Hawaiaan shirts, a Xmas ride tradition for them.

lawn mowing 30:00 [3]

walk 40:00 [3]

Walk to see a laser light Christmas show nearby which also had about 6 people in Star Wars type costumes.

Road Cycling 1:49:00 [3] 53.3 km (2:03 / km) +70m 2:02 / km

Buffalo group ride which I hadn't done for at least a year ....mainly due to the danger. I joined the 30kph average group of 10 guys - normally do the 32.
It was pretty mucky with 2 cars turning in front of us at 2 points and generally slow until we hit military rd --- then we were able to ride 2 abreast in a proper pace line. I found it pretty easy on way out to Outer Harbour but it was a touch harder on the return into a slight wind.
I haven't done any real speed work for ages.
Amazing no of groups out riding and lovely day for it.

Road Cycling 53:00 [3] 18.5 km (2:52 / km) +33m 2:50 / km

Slow ride after Buffalo ride.
Glenelg to Kingston Beach & return.

mt bike 3:53:00 [3] 80.0 km (2:55 / km) +986m 2:45 / km

Morning ride with Michelle & Liz showing Liz around our quieter roads out east..
Home - TTGully - up Seaview rd to top of Snake Gully.
Up Range Rd Nth - Range rd south- out and back along Churchett rd - Paracombe - Inglewood - Paracombe - down Torrens Hill to Gorge - Cudlee creek café. Return down Gorge to MC's at Felixstowe and then home.
Had 800m climb in first 45kms.
I struggled a bit early in the breathing dept but as usual was better after 2 or 3 hrs.

Wednesday Dec 13, 2017 #

Note

Mandatory reporting online course was painful and not that much useful.

Tuesday Dec 12, 2017 #

commuter bike 50:00 [3] 15.0 km (3:20 / km)

Abbreviated ride into city to do my First Aid update course

Monday Dec 11, 2017 #

mt bike 1:42:00 [3]

Took a Scott Spark to Anstey Hill for a test ride.
Annoyed to find that I couldn't adjust the seat down any further (it was a medium) so it was marginally too tall for me and I couldn't ride with comfort or confidence.
So just did the one climb to Range rd and mucked around on a variety of trails. The Eagle gearing is a nice feature but it does weigh more than the Epic. No smalls in SA unfortunately.

Had a chest xray for my ongoing respiratory problem - 3 months old now.

Road Cycling 4:11:00 [3] 106.0 km (2:22 / km) +980m 2:16 / km

Great ride with Michelle, David, Gerry, Liz & Steve from Dulwich to McClaren Vale and back. Nice having company and with most of it on the southern veloway it was possible to ride side by side and have a chat.
On way back we took the veloway to Lonsdale rd and then some back streets to Hallett Cove park and a climb up to the trainline. Then on Marino-Glenelg bikeway; Turtur bikeway, up thru Malvern and over towards Victoria Park.

M,D & G had stopped at Glenelg for lunch and S & L had stopped at their home in Malvern. I had parked my car somewhere in Rose park ...further up than intended due to the motorsport people having clogged up the streets.
Being in a hurry I had forgotten to note the street name...so I rode around pretty aimlessly for 10 mins peering down various streets for the red car on my return!

Saturday Dec 9, 2017 #

Note

meant to ride but couldn't force myself out of bed...then had a work lunch for Bikeabout at Lobethal.

Friday Dec 8, 2017 #

mt bike 2:45:00 [3] 32.0 km (5:09 / km)

Took a brand new $5km Specialized Epic 29er dually out for a trial at Cobbler Creek. Rode every trail except for short DH and most twice. Even the long DH on NE side...but avoiding the bigger rock jumps at end.
Felt nice but would need to change some gears as its a 1 x 11.
One advantage of 1 x 11 is that my arthritic left hand wouldn't be needed for gear changes.
Weighs 11kg. Also has an annoying allen key wheel removal but can change that out.

walk 1:30:00 [3]

Control placing etc for sporting schools program.
Sessions went well but it rained heavily for the 45 mins that I was control collecting.

commuter bike 30:00 [3]

A bit of a token log as part of a 3 hr RideABike coaching session from 5-8pm at Bonython Park.
I had one lady to teach to ride who hadn't got past scooting the bike in her previous lessons evidently. It took me most of the session but she was riding by the end - yeh! Other coaches had the tentative riders.

We had some of the bright yellow OFO bikes there for free for our use.
Ben & I had fun trying to race them but they are quite clunky. Have a great bell & seat adjustments though. This is not really a bike sharing company but a data sharing company - that is where they make their money...from the personal details you have to give them to hire the bike. Luckily we had them remotely opened. They all have have tracking devices on them.

Wednesday Dec 6, 2017 #

walk 40:00 [3]

Walk along the Torrens.
In Canberra various Quidditch teams were staying at the AIS as they had their national champs there. Then the Adelaide team was on my plane home.
Australia won the World Champs last year against some 30 countries.
Who would have known!

Road Cycling 2:46:00 [3] 53.0 km (3:08 / km) +1004m 2:52 / km

Bal ride that was an away venue starting at Verdun. Felt a bit tired getting up but rode quite well once I got going.
Rode with Liz, Sharon & Steve.
North up Beaumonts, Tanahnerah, Gum Flat, Range to Carey Gully (all up)
Up a little more in Deviation across to Lobethal Td and then the 4 climbs up to Ashton and across on Woods Hill rrd to top of Greenhill and then a further climb up to Mt Lofty. This 30km gave us 800metres climb!
Then down to Stirling for coffee break at Organic café - very disappointing hot chocolate!
11.44mins for 2.55km to ashton av 13.04kph climb = 133m

Back, mostly downhill via Heathfield, Leslie creek rd to Mylor then across to Hahndorf and Amberside rd back to Verdun. Av 23 for this section.
Short ride as Xmas lunch was on today.
Went to Farmgate at Echunga on xmas pressie search - nice stuff there.

Monday Dec 4, 2017 #

commuter bike 2:51:00 [3] 48.0 km (3:34 / km) +336m 3:27 / km

Scenic ride in Canberra on a very grey day on Julie's commuter bike.
Bike quite heavy & a bit long in reach.
Went over to Lyneham to café in Wattle st to look at photo display and then thru Glebe park to the lake. Went out towards airport and thru the wetlands where it started raining heavily. Luckily I had my rainjacket.
Sought refuge in the National library (as one does) and went into the excellent Peter Dombrovkris photo exhibition.

Back out into the rain and continued on my lap of the lake, with a brief excursion up the Molonglo river to look at the ford crossing, which predictably was well under water. Two outlets from the Scrivener dam were letting out water. Thru the cork plantation and then the climb back up to Macquarie, with a brief stop to buy a kg of cherries for my hosts.

Quick change and shower and I drove Julies car to National Museum where I loved the Songlines aboriginal display (very hi-tech) and had a look at several other things too. Drove to Julies work and she deposited me at the airport. Nice day in Canberra.

Sunday Dec 3, 2017 #

walk 1:00:00 [3]

Walk with Julie & David up Mt Painter and around - pleasant.

Saturday Dec 2, 2017 #

swimming 40:00 [3] 1.1 km (36:22 / km)

Well its only taken me 11 months to get my first swim of the year!
Did it in style though at the AIS 50m pool, and with a lane all to myself.
That was useful, as
a) my goggles kept fogging up
b) my repaired but weak L shoulder meant I had trouble going straight.
Time is a guess and I well may have done an extra 100m, as my counting after 5 is always a worry. Tried to do some kicking only with a pool buoy and was pathetic. Did some breastroke too, as my L shoulder was shocked to have to work.

walk 20:00 [3]

Little stroll around after tea.

Note

Off to OA conference in Canberra - maybe my last.
