Backcountry Skiing 3:30:00 [3] +1000m

Skied the Gorge with CO and Revy. Had a relaxed start with lattes on the way - Only C-Bass's company would have made the day any better, but she was on call and couldn't join us. We climbed up to the top at km 17 and skied down the back followed by a half run down the front and a final full run down the front. The conditions were a bit tricky. The snow was clumping and sticking under my skis and there was a little bit of crust in some places. My new ski boots seem to be working out so far. They feel way more aggressive than my old ones so they will take a little getting used to. My breathing was quite hard for most of the day, but that should get better as my fitness and blood counts come back.

Hike/Scramble 3:15:00 [3] +750m
shoes: Spikecross

A snowy run and scramble with Claire, Nicki and Leslie up and around Sulphur Mountain in Banff. We started by running from Leslie's house in Banff up to the base of Sulphur, then hiked up, had a photo shoot at the top, ran down the other side, hiked up and over a shortcut, popped out by the old springs, ran back into town via the tacky tourist store by the river bridge and ended at Leslie's house. Fun girl's day out with a good feed in town before heading back into town.

Note

I'm very tired from the weekend's skiing. Quite bagged actually, and the area around my spacer valve is painful anytime I move. Not sure what is up with that. I'll keep an eye on it I guess.

Cross Country Skiing (Skate) 3:00:00 [3]

Skate lesson with Sandy. I had a great time. My various moves improved but towards the end my brain got confused and I would offset on both sides when I intended to one skate. I reprogramed myself and sorted it out. Had a blast on the downhills and feel quite confident bombing down the hills compared to last year in XC ski gear.

Cross Country Skiing (Skate) 1:30:00 [3]

Lesson by Mike. Not my favorite session as Mike and CO were always in front of me and I could not hear what coach Mike was saying. As I was getting more tired, they were way ahead of me and I was skiing on my own. I was getting frustrated as I wanted help with my one skate. In the end Mike looked at me one skate and said I was doing great, but I still feel that it's very hard to keep a flowy momentum in the one skate when I'm on slight downhills or flat terrain. I feel like I want to switch to two skate. I can glide quite far on each ski in my strides so I don't think there is a problem with my weight shifting and balance so maybe I'm misreading the terrain. I will have to keep practicing.

Cross Country Skiing (Classic) 2:30:00 [3]

Lots of drills and coaching by Sandy. Fun morning, although it seems as though the groups are more mixed this year with beginner level skiers in the intermediate group.

Cross Country Skiing (Skate) 2:00:00 [3]

An introduction to skate skiing by Guy with only CO and I in the group. We started in the grid and progressed very quickly onto the trails. Did a loop with many hills and leaned to one skate, two skate, off set and double pole. I find all moves relatively easy except for one skate where I quickly end up going a little too fast for my arms to keep up. Practiced adding more glide to the one skate and that helped, but any time where there is a slight downhill or easy flat, I seem to want to switch to two skate. I'll keep practicing.

Cross Country Skiing (Classic) 1:30:00 [3]

A tour around with Guy with occasional pointers and tips. Had fun climbing up Paradise and then bombing back down. I felt pretty good about my skiing.

Cross Country Skiing (Skate) 1:00:00 [3]

Back at Silverstar again for the annual Supercamp. Rented some skate gear for the camp and got out today just to give it a try. I got tired fast, but with some good coaching this weekend hopefully I can get more efficient.

Spinning 2:12:00 [3]

Mostly E3, but lots of E4 which in the fourth set which ended up asE3 for me. I still can't push as much as I normally can, but I am slowly improving.

Backcountry Skiing 3:00:00 [3]

Yo-yo day at Bow Summit with Slice and Suzy. Really nice conditions for this time of year. My boots feel awesome in terms of skiing and the super easy maneuver to switch from ski mode to walk mode and vise versa, but I think they are too narrow as my feet were quite sore. I think I will try the men's version of the same boot to see if they fit better.

Backcountry Skiing 4:00:00 [2] 15.0 km (16:00 / km) +650m 13:09 / km

A tour up to Burstall Pass. I tried a new pair of TLT6 boots. They feel very aggressive compared to my old boots. There were a few pressure points that I need to sort out. They might be too narrow. There was quite a bit of snow and I could have used my normal phat skis, but I went conservative just in case we would encounter rocks and such.

Running (Trail) 50:00 [3]
shoes: Speed Cross (gray)

Secret Trail. I felt really out of breath on the climbs and had to walk most of them, otherwise things felt good. My blood counts are quite low still so that probably contributes to the out if breath feeling. On the upside, the activity helps me feel less fatigued than if I didn't do anything, just like a lot of the research suggests.

Weights/Strength 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Speed Cross (gray)

3 x curling club stairs with pushups and sit-ups and dips. Last one as fast as you could go. I really sucked on the stairs and I can't do sit-ups yet. My lower abs are gone. Pull-ups, squats and pushups in the park after. Only squats worked well. The rest needed too much abs. Back to stairs for more repeats. I fell to the back of a pretty non sporty group and had my ego bruised, but I just cant do high intensity yet. My throat, chest and belly hurt and I had spaghetti body. Not a fun night, but good to see where I'm at and force myself to back off when I was feeling rough.

Cross Country Skiing 2:24:00 [3] 17.5 km (8:14 / km) +300m 7:35 / km

Up Paradise to the end of Alder Point, then back on Comin' Round the Mountain and down Paradise. Very good ski again. Felt tired by 1:45 but picked up a little after eating some chocolate.
2 PM

Cross Country Skiing 50:00 [3]

On lower trails of Silverstar (can't remember which ones). I didn't get into it as much as I felt really tired from the morning ski. Cut it short while CO kept skiing.

Cross Country Skiing 2:45:00 [3]

Silverstar ski. Spent some time in the grid practicing technique and then headed to the top of the hill by the chair lift (Paradise, Comin' Round the Mountain Connector - turned around at alder point loop and skied down Paradise again). We would have gone further but we ran out of day light. The ski out was very fast and in the fading day light combined with some fog/low clouds it was at times impossible to see the tracks which made it even more exiting. I felt much better today (didn't get sick) and climbing went really well. I only slipped when I got tired and sloppy with the technique (my legs too straight) and managed to correct myself every time.

Cross Country Skiing 1:00 [3]

XC Ski at Sovereign. First of the year and I felt a bit tired. I think I may be fighting something. The technique came back relatively easily and I think I skied well, but it may just have been how it felt.

Spin with Wendy.
6 PM

Spinning 2:00:00 [3]

Managed to hold on for the full 2hrs, but could not hold the intensity as the rest of the group. Very tired afterwards.

Secret Trail. Felt good and it was a beautiful day. Health is coming back. Had a smile on my face the whole time. Life is good!

Hike/Scramble 50:00 [2]
shoes: Speed Cross (gray)

A little hike up Tunnel Mountain with CO, Bash and Conrad Anker. Yup, I only hang with the best.....although I had to admit that I did not recognize Conrad Anker when we met up with the group. I thought he was just one of the group. But then again, I wonder if he recognized me?!
