Mountain Biking (Road) 1:00:00 [3]

A little cruise through and out of town. Bike felt good. It's quite hilly around here and it seems as if there is always wind.

Running (Hills) 55:00 [3]

Another run followed by some hill repeats.

It was a rainy morning in Launceston but still pretty warm. I suspect we will have lots of this in the upcoming week or two.

We headed to the airport to catch the race shuttle to Burnie after lunch. And what a sight! An entire airport with just adventure racers! I can't believe that I didn't pul out my camera to take some photos. What an oversight!

Got to meet and greet with many familiar faces, many whom I haven't seen in a long time. Liza, STORM, Mary, Ryan, Bob and more. Also got meet part of a South American team, "hobbit" and "Smelly".

Now we are awaiting our bikes and then we will start some unpacking.

Fun times indeed!

Running (Hills) 55:00 [3]

Logging my workout in advance as I may not have Internet access until we hit Burnie. I feel way better today. I bet the run yesterday helped clear my head a bit. Today is all about hill repeats to make those muscle fire. Tomorrow we head on the shuttle to Burnie and will meet up with Sean and Bart in the evening. Most Canadians are traveling as I write this. It will be great to see them all. Quite a large Canadian gang gathering!

Running (Road) 45:00 [3]

Run along river. Cleared my cold a little more which was good.

Note

After a long but trouble free trip, Mike and I arrived in Launceston, Australia late yesterday afternoon. My head cold broke out the night before our departure so I'm feeling a bit under the weather, but I have several days to recover so hopefully this will not affect the race at all.

For any of you who are still about to travel to the race, a few tips that may make it easier to fly into Australia:

-Pack all food (this is anything that you can eat including bars, vitamins, pain killers, candy, drinks etc) in one place at the top of a bag. You will need to show them all your food. They can detect this through their x-ray device.

-Also pack all paddling gear so that you can easily show them the stuff. They will Check this to ensure it is clean. Pre clean it with soap and water and complete the form that Craig form XPD sent out and this will be a super easy process.

- Clean your bike tires and bike so they are free of any dirt. They are very likely to have you open the box and show them that you are not bringing in any foreign soil into Australia.

- Tents and tent pegs will have to be shown as free of dirt as well

Saturday Oct 22, 2011 #

Note

We are successfully checked in at the airport. All bags and bike boxes were accepted as is! No need to repack anything as feared. Phew, now we can lean back and relax!

Weights/Strength 45:00 [3]

Strength workout while half asleep still. Was up late downloading a movie to my iPad for the trip tomorrow.

Running (Road) 45:00 [3]

Yes! The vey last and I say it again, the very last stupidly early morning run in my training program. These early morning runs have by far been the hardest thing to motivate myself for. Not only because it's been hard to get out of bed, but also because running was a huge weakness of mine when starting this program. I have to admit that I have come to really like trail running and it has brought my fitness up by a fair bit as well. After getting my IT bands fully under control I also have had very little to worry about in terms of injury. As long as I maintain my physio home work and my yoga work, I seems to be just fine. That being said, I'm no Nicki Rehn or STORM! It's just all relative to my starting point.
6 PM

Running (Road) 1:25:00 [3]

Run along the river. Nice and cool night. Perfect for running. I felt really pumped tonight. Full of energy and all happy because of a good physio session right before. All parts are healing well and I'm really hoping my body will hold up as well in Tasmania as it did at RTNX.

Weights/Strength 45:00 [3]

Had a good little basement session today (amongst all the crap to be packed).

Paddle 1:07:00 [3]

Can't get through a full workout in the evening after work anymore as we get kicked off before dark. Good thing this was the last session before flying to Tassie. Had a fun night. Rocked it up to some tunes and got sthe evil eye from the rowers. They were likely just jelaous!

The morning run today felt really good. I like running in the dark. Only three more morning workouts and then Tassie!

Weights/Strength 45:00 [3]

Had the morning off today which was nice, although I felt more tired than usual as I spent most of the day stressing over our bike boxes. Found out that they were 6cm too big to be allowed on our flight, and as we leave on Saturday, we don't really have time to build custom boxes. Besides, we really want to fly with the hard cases since we have them. Mike waved his wand around and now we have a note on our actual tickets that gives us permission both ways to fly with our own boxes. Phew! Now we just have to try to squeeze all our stuff into as few bags as possible!

Thanks Leanne for posting such great drawings of your bike box on Team Spirits blog. I came very close to having to build one tonight.

Mountain Biking 1:20:00 [3]

Elbow Pass bike ride with full pack. A chilly day with freezing temps, ice and a bit of snow. Stayed nice and warm though so that is good.
2 PM

Hike/Scramble 2:38:00 [3]

Jumpingpound area hike. Nice and quiet out. The temps warmed up a little by the time we hiked and it was really nice out. I like this time of the year.

A little run along the river. Felt good today - perhaps because I was wearing a minimal pack. Sunny and beautiful!
3 PM

Kayak Ergo 1:15:00 [3]

As we felt like we had lots to do in order to get sorted out for our flight next weekend, we paddled at home instead of spending time driving to and from the reservoir. Had a good workout, but it's so much harder to stay motivated when training indoors!

Weights/Strength 45:00 [3]

Only 3 more weight sessions before going to Tassie. It's feeling easier to get through these session when the light at the end of the tunnel is clearly visible.

Running (Road) 1:30:00 [3]

Felt quite uninspired to run this evening. I could think of a million other things I would have rather done, but I went anyway. Was not quite holding the speed I was supposed to, but maybe I benefited from the work anyway.

Yikes, wouldn't want to be this guy: http://news.discovery.com/adventure/mountain-biker...

Weights/Strength 45:00 [3]

Could feel the workout from last night in the body. Good little set.
7 PM

Mountain Biking 2:06:00 [3]

Sulphur springs, Nima and area. Cold feet at -2C, but had fun Riding with lights. Met a few other night riders as well.
9 PM

Running (Trail) 15:00 [3]

Was supposed to be a 20 min run, but my feet. Would not listen. The bike ride made them into two unusable blocks of ice.

Morning route through the neighbourhood.
11 AM

Yoga 30:00 [3]

Really well needed session today. Walked in very tight and came out much softer feeling.Too bad I have to sit at a desk for the rest of the day.
5 PM

Paddle 2:00:00 [3]

Paddle with reps of intensity build 20 min 70%, 12min 75%, 8min 80%, 4min 90%. Took out the "pig" again and on top of that I had to paddle one of the paddles at the canoe club which was pretty heavy and awkward. The feather was nuts!

Mountain Biking (Road) 1:30:00 [3]

E3 cruise.
4 PM

Weights/Strength 45:00 [3]

Regular set.

9 AM

Running (Trail) 1:10:00 [3]

E2 and E3 run along the trails of the reservoir with a big pack. Felt like I could go forever which is a feeling that doesn't happen often.
11 AM

Paddle 1:30:00 [3]

E2 and E4 paddle following our run. Had two recreational ladies snap up the nice boat just in front of me as I was waiting for Mike to get ready. Ended up having to paddle the heavy and clumsy boat. I didn't mind so much as it felt more like paddling with Bart or James in terms of the weight of the boat...and I bet also more like paddling the inflatables.

Mountain Biking 1:15:00 [3]

So I think summer is over. Arrived in the Kananaskis to quite a bit of snow, even at lower elevations. Our bike ride was good despite the snow and I had the opportunity to try out the new NRS gloves that Slice recommended. They worked well with a liner inside and will be my choice of rain glove on the bike from now on. A little warm in the direct sunlight, but with the liner inside I never felt wet.

2 PM

Hike/Scramble 3:00:00 [3]

The hike following our bike ride was also a bit snowy at times. Had planned a route up and over Fortress, but decided to turn around before reaching the summit. I didn't want to risk twisting an ankle in the snow covered rocks. Instead of our loop we went up to another couple of mountain lakes before heading back to the car.

Weights/Strength 45:00 [3]

Strength session. Felt sleepy again this morning. It's so hard to motivate myself to workout when I can hardly get out of bed.
12 PM

Yoga 30:00 [3]

Awesome session today with Yoga, stretching and physio work. Feel all loose now.
5 PM

Road Biking 2:00:00 [3]

This was supposed to be a mountain bike ride, but the pouring rain and cool temps made us decide to stay closer to town. It was manageable for the first 90 minutes, but as the temps fell, my hands and feet got really cold. Must figure that problem out before Tassie.
7 PM

Running (Road) 20:00 [3]

A run bricked with the bike ride...on very cold and stiff feet. It was hard to get the speed up when the feet were not working properly.

Note

More on fuzzy rubber: I was lucky to come across some fuzzy rubber while in Sweden and I have now had a chance to try both pants and shirt.

The shirt: the top I got was made by Chill Cheater: http://www.chillcheater.com/aqshop/catalogue.php?i...

The pants were made by Hikosports: http://www.hikosport.com/lars-1336/

Both have been just the ticket to stay dry and warm. The pants have a fleece lining and are feeling pretty warm. You will overheat if temps are getting up in the mid teens. The shirt had a much thinner liner and I can add shirts under it to increase warmth. I was fine with just a sports bra and the shirt in the mid-teens (no overheating), but if the sun was out full force you may need to wear something else. I also wore this set-up in much cooler conditions (I'm guessing around 7C) and rain and kept pretty much perfect (can get warmer if I want by layering or cooler by wearing less underneath).
5 PM

Paddle 2:00:00 [3]

Another night at the reservoir. Less people out paddling this time of the year. Nice night though and we had a really good session with 3 x 10 min at 90% in the middle of the E2 set.
8 PM

Running (Road) 40:00 [3]

A road run along the bluffs. This was my morning run, but as I chose to sleep in a bit I ran in the evening instead. Had a really good one Felt really quick even though I ate right before heading out. Maybe it was the cool air.

Paddle 1:45:00 [3] 10.0 km (10:30 / km)

Another good paddle with the team. Figured out who was the weak link ...me...and sorted out who paddles with who. Was a bit sore in upper body from hike yesterday. Fantastic weekend overall!
3 PM

Mountain Biking 2:30:00 [3] +600m

Super fun ride on Larch Hills traverse with Sean and Revy. Felt slow and heavy at first with little spark in the legs, but got into it after a while. Nice to get back on trails with a pack to remind the body what it's like.

Hike/Scramble 4:30:00 [3] 15.0 km (18:00 / km) +1200m 12:51 / km
shoes: XA Pro Ultra 2_1

A very rainy and cool day in the mountains near Revelstoke with Revy and Sean. Revy had scouted out a little bit of a training hike involving moustly bushwhacking. A bit of a deja vu from RTNX with soaking wet clothes and lots of alders. Good day to sort out gear and clothes for XPD.
6 PM

Paddle 1:00:00 [3]

A good little paddle in some inflatables after our hike. Mike came out for this one too so we were a full team. I tried out my new fuzzy rubber and this will be the ticket for me in racing from now on! I can't believe I didn't know about this stuff until now!
