Spinning 2:00:00 [3]

Another time trial attempt. Not ultimate to do them so close to each other, but it was fun trying. I produced 4 watts less than Tuesday night and felt double as tired :)

Spinning 2:00:00 [4]

Time trial night. I had no idea how it would go since I haven't time trialed since last spring when I set a PB. In the end it went better than I expected. I was able to get into the groove and push fairly hard. As usual it wasn't pretty, but I got through it. I was down 6 watts on my 3 min TT and a full 17 watts on my 20 min TT, but I think my watts per kg will still be high and I landed about 10-15 watts higher than I thought I could do. I'm totally happy with the results.

20 min TT: 218W

Backcountry Skiing 2:00:00 [3]

My gut was acting up after eating stuff that I'm not used to having for breakfast (heavy and a bit greasy). It didn't get any better as we climbed up the first ridge so I decided to pull the plug rather than continuing and making the climb back much longer. I've had an amazing week and I'm pretty happy with what my body has been able to do so not a big deal to make today a hut day.

I totally have a love affair with my new ski boots!

Backcountry Skiing 7:00:00 [3] +2200m

Another nice day of skiing. We hiked up and over the ridge behind the hut to the lookers left of where we dropped in to the Hilda East zone a couple of days ago. I was a bit nervous about the climb up and the top section that followed. The first ski took us down the valley and set us up nicely for climbing up the Broom zone. We tried a new run down to Windy Lake and found some really nice snow. We lapped that area one more time before heading back up and over the other end (north) of the Broom zone. The climb back to the hut ended just as it was getting dark.

Backcountry Skiing 4:00:00 [3] +1200m

Today I decided to listen to my body and go for a shorter day. My stomach isn't feeling a hundred percent (had way too much for dinner last night) and it wasn't very fun climbing. The day started with a run behind the hut followed by one down the backside of Gateway Col. We skied quite far down and hiked up the ridge back above the Norns. Raw Fish and I headed home from there and had a great little run on the shady side of the Battlefield in the trees. Now we are snacking on some chips.

Backcountry Skiing 7:00:00 [3] +2150m

I felt much better today and managed to hang on to the end with no issues. I made my pack lighter by leaving a few luxuries behind and giving Mike the medical kit. That helped a lot. The first climb up Rampart was fun with a small boot pack section that makes it feel kind of wild. We skied down the Hilda East zone quite far down towards the valley. The snow was a bit wind affected at the top but not too bad. I had a blast going down. From there we climbed up the ridge between the Hilda East zone and the Broom Zone and had a fun run down to valley bottom. We skied two runs in the Broom Zone and then worked our way around Burton Direct and back up to the lodge. James and I made it back just before dark.

Backcountry Skiing 6:00:00 [3] +1750m

Started by skiing one of the Norns from the ridge top, then up to the top of the Hut zone and down the backside on Burton Direct. Came back around and climbed half the way up the Battlefield up track before crossing over to Melting (Mead) Pot. By the time we got to the top of the Mead Pot I was completely done. The first time ever feeling like that after anything. In a way worse than after a race. The rest of the group went for more runs and I went back to the hut and crashed in bed for a couple of hours. The skiing was still great and we found some good snow. Some areas were a bit wind affected but still skiable. After a big dinner feast I feel better and hopefully I can have another great day tomorrow.

Backcountry Skiing 7:00:00 [3] 15.0 km (28:00 / km) +2000m 16:48 / km

Today was another amazing day. Every single run was fantastic. The snow was great. We started by climbing up behind the cabin and skiing down to the lower lake. Some sweet pitches and great snow. From the lower lake we climbed up the Norns. We lapped the Norns (the Glades of Nornia) a bunch with some full and some half laps. Had one fun climb with RVG where we huffed it a bit. Our last climb took us up all the way up along the Battlefield to the Gateway Col. We found some nice and steep pitches and beautiful snow all the way down to the lake. This was the best skiing this season by far. Steep, deep, fast and my new boots continue to help me improve my skiing (at least it feels like they do).

Backcountry Skiing 3:00:00 [2] +600m

The fist day at Hilda was like stepping in to heaven with some amazing turns in deep snow. We started the day with a little chat around avalanche safety followed by playing out an avalanche scenario with three burials outside. Then we had a quick lunch so we could spend the afternoon skiing. First we climbed up behind the hut and had a fun run down to the upper lake. From there we worked our way up the other side to the Sweaty Knob. We found some really nice snow and ended up skiing the lower part of the Battle Field before climbing back up to the lodge. My new boots continue to amaze me. They do so well in steeper terrain (compared to my old ones). I can get the skis to react more quickly and the popping comes easier too.

Oh, and I almost forgot, the helicopter ride in was quite exciting with high winds and some big drops. One of the more intense rides I've ever had in a helicopter. Hopefully it will be a calmer ride out.

Note

Today my sister did her first spin time trial. She really nailed it for being her first go at it. In honor of her accomplishment I started an Attackpoint account for her. Welcome to the attackpoint (AP) world Carbon Copy!

Weights/Strength 45:00 [3]

Core, glutes, upper body and some dead lifts before driving to Revy for our ski trip which starts on Monday. I figured I deserve some vacation after working a week and a half in a row.

Spinning 2:00:00 [3]

Similar to Tuesday's class but tonight felt harder. Likely due to legs still being tired from Tuesday's spin.

26 people in the class:

26 minutes where each participant got to pick E2, E3 or E4 for the group to ride for one minute before the next rider called a zone (E4 sets could not be back to back). Eight E4 sets, but mostly E3.

26 minutes where we picked E2, E3 or MAP.

12 minutes with a pick of E2 or E3 and six 30-second intervals of AnP

Cross Country Skiing (Skate) 45:00 [3]

Much colder today and we were having issues keeping toes and fingers warm. I started to warm up at the end, but we decided to start heading home.

Cross Country Skiing (Skate) 2:00:00 [3]

We tried our new skate skis at Nipika resort where the weather was forcasted to be much warmer than in Calgary and it turned out to be true. I tried to focus on my technique rather than speed and think I got my "one skate" to work much better than in November when I was learning to skate ski. I also managed to sustain the skating up some longer climbs, although I'm sure it wasn't pretty. We explored most of the trails on the north side, including a few in and outs on a one way trail when we got a bit spun around. The trail system at Nipika is quite pretty and has a nice family feel to it where everyone is chatting to everyone.
