Mountain Biking 2:00:00 [3] +600m

We offered to help the race organizer pick up some of the orienteering flags from the Moonraker trails. Revy picked one up with his car before breakfast and then we rode to pick up the others. For me, this ride was a mistake! I was so tired. I was completely out of energy. My legs didn't feel too bad and I could make it up climbs, but I just couldn't keep the pace up at all. Despite this it was fun to be on these trails and we had a chance to stop and look at the spot where we zip lined last year. It was pretty scary to think that we went across such a huge canyon! Yikes!

Race the Rockies 2008

A beautiful course that started with a short run followed by a 5 hr trek up Mount Seven outside Golden, B.C. The trek was really fun with a very steep first three hours that had us hiking through some tight bush as well as up a creek bed. The other two hours was a mix of climbing through bush and alpine terrain and some descending on scree slopes. There was also some trail and road running towards the TA. I felt really good, even though my heart rate was exceeding my maximum most of the time :). Our first transition was pretty quick and we rode our bikes down the down hill trails of Mount Seven. These were a mix of smooth trails and more technical sections. A really fun addition to an adventure race. I can't wait to go back and ride these trails again. My new bike was great on this stuff.

After the bike ride we entered another TA where the race took a different turn. We learned by the TA volunteers that there was a rescue effort in progress for a racer on the course. A helicopter had flown in to help the racer out from the trek, but upon the return of the helicopter we were all informed the very sad news that our racing friend had not made it, but passed away during the race. This had us all in tears and it was a very difficult time.

The race organizer and all the volunteers that worked this weekend deserve huge recognition. They came together like I have never seen any organization do before. They worked so hard before, during and after the race. They helped all the racers on the course and helped with all the logistical challenges that came with the rescue effort and closing down the race early. Despite all the hard work and the sad news, they were so caring and supportive. This must have been so hard on them and yet they kept going. An even greater appreciation goes out to the race organizer who led this team through such a difficult situation.

My condolences go out to our racing friend's family and close friends. I can't imagine how difficult this time must be for them.

Note

Null training today since I had to work late and then come home and pack for RTR. I always forget how much time it takes to get organized for a race. Packing for an 18hr, 24hr or 36hr race is almost the same as for packing for a week long race. Only the food amount is different!

Paddle 1:00:00 [3]

Paddled at the canoe club again. Good consistent 1 hour with only a little bit of wind at the end. As we came out of the water three people smiled at us and said "hi trouble" and made AR type comments....Mike and I didn't relly recognize them, but we smiled along. Perhaps we met at FMIJ a few weks ago? We said "see you on the weekend" and they agreed. I guess they are doing the RTR.

Mountain Biking 1:15:00 [3]

Commute. Good medium pace ride today. There were no cars this morning at all! Maybe becasue the Stampede is over. It's nice to have the road to yourself. Everything is feeling good and the spin todat was good to work out the legs from the hill repeats yesterdday. Tomorrow we'll do some bike repeats and then take it easy until the race. Lots of stretching and rolling will replace the training.
