Running (Trail) 2:31:00 [3] 22.0 km (6:52 / km)
shoes: Speed Cross (gray)

My back and sides were a bit chafed from the run yesterday so I decided to run with just a waist belt. Mike lent me his new S-Lab belt while he tested another Salomon waist belt. I loved the feel of the S-Lab belt. It fit perfectly and there was no rubbing. The front pockets can fit me enough food for a medium run (maybe even a long), and the flasks in the back are comfortable. They are a tiny bit tricky to get in and out but for the comfort of the belt it's worth it. We switched belts for a while and the bottle belt didn't work for me. It bounced too much and made the tail bone sore.

I cut the inner liner out of my Salomon pants for today and they feel better. They still ride down so they may not work in the end, which is a shame as they feel so good otherwise.

My body felt pretty good today. No pains in hips or IT bands even though I felt a bit in those areas yesterday.

Running (Trail) 4:20:00 [3] 33.0 km (7:53 / km)
shoes: Speed Cross (gray)

Minnewanka plus a speed hike up some of Aylmer Pass. It got too snowy so we turned around. Had a few issues today. Tried a pair of Salomon Exo tights. Had issues keeping them up. They kept riding down and the waist is a bit too lose on me, plus too high when the tight is properly pulled up over the bum. Also when pulled up properly they end above my knee like a long pair of shorts, rather than 3/4 down as they are supposed to. Another bigger issue today was that my pack was rubbing big time around all the seams on the sides and up towards the back side of the shoulder strap. I have tender marks across my back and upper waist. Maybe because the pack was pretty full and heavy, not sure. The last hour I had to unbuckle all the straps and run with it loose. Not a good sign, but I'm glad I'm learning this now and not in a race. Lastly had some pain in hips and IT bands. I will cut my run back a little as today's run was about 20 minutes longer than planned. Otherwise the run felt good and steady. I managed to eat really well and also drink more than I usually do. Only about 800ml but that is an improvement while running for me.

Note

Sore throat gone today. Now I just feel a bit heavy in the head, but perhaps that is caused by trying to think. Taking the evening off last night was probably a good idea although I did feel lazy for not training.

(sick)

Feeling like I'm fighting a cold. Have a bit of a sore throat. I really don't want to get sick for our Italy trip.

Weights/Strength (Running Technique) 1:15:00 [3]

Fun session. A little lighter load than on Monday but did two back to back Everest and had my best run ever on the second repeat. Llew demoed how to do it in between my sets and then I totally got it down to the details. I lasted much longer the second set too before I falling apart. This is how I have been feeling outside on the climbs lately so I think I'm starting to get it even in my own running. Llew keeps telling me how Jon and Grant training with him can do Everest for 6 minutes in a row (I can barely make 2 minutes). When I mentioned that I thought 6 mins would be impossible for me he just smiled and said the others are not using a weight vest. What!?! Jon and Grant better watch out. Once my vest comes off, I will catch up!

Spinning 2:00:00 [3]

All MAP tonight. Yikes. My legs will be fried for the session with Llew in the morning.

Note

I mentioned to Llew this morning that I feel much less tired and achy in my lower back after my long runs than I used to. He right away said that it is because I'm managing to run "2 inches shorter". It is apparently the number one correction that helps manage back issues, followed by what I though was the main reason, the fact that I'm not swinging my upper body from side to side much any more but let my arms track straight up and down as if pulling a rope down. The side to side rotation is just a waste of energy and doesn't add a benefit to the running.

shoes: Five Fingers

Oj, oj, oj, when I thought I couldn't possibly tire myself out any more, it appears I could. I was surprised how well I managed to hang on for the workout this morning even though my legs felt done already in the warm-up. I liked how Llew hit a few things hard back to back: 90 sec jumping squats with heavy ball, 30 jumps on the box (each foot landing on top of bench), 90 sec jump over bench, 2 min Everest with vest, 90 seconds jump over the bench with both feet on same side. Leg killer. After that we did a similar burn out with upper body.
