Note

The Family Team headed out to West Tyson with the Orange map from August 2008. It was another exercise in walking the map slowly reading contours carefully.

We were able to see a small reentrant causing our trail to dip, right where we were standing. We were able to see a spur and run over it, before we got there we (I) predicted that there was a reentrant right on the other side, and it was dry so it was not as obvious as a creek. Yes, it was there. That was hot stuff.

Later, we crossed a creek on a bridge, we were 100% sure where we were. We read on the map that there was a reentrant to our left, sure enough it was there. We moved up the creek and found a small spur hiding a large reentrant right where we thought it should be. So far so good. We ran up the ridge of the spur on the far side of that reentrant, when we got to the 'top', we could see two nearby reentrants that we could see on the map.

And so it went.

Near the end, we came around a spur into a reentrant/creek and found a reentrant running right up the hill to where we were parked (that was the last leg of our hike, trying to get back to van using the terrain). We were expecting that reentrent so we found what we were looking for -- so we thought. We were almost to the top of the hill and were pretty much where we needed to be when I could see that the reentrant we thought we were in was really to our left.

Today, I can't imagine "seeing" this much while running. It's almost like we're going to have to go back to walking and set a goal of just finding a small number of controls relying as much as possible on contours. That might be the plan.
