AR race 29:50:00 [3]
shoes: Orange Solomon

Raced Stubborn Mule with Team Green Paw Adventure Sports: Tim, Anna, and Erik. I think this team is unusual. They find the time and energy to be polite, demonstrate respect, and collaborate. Not just to me the new guy, and not just before and after the race, but to each other while racing.

After driving up from Steven's Point, we started the race at 6:00 AM a little north of Merill Wisconsin. First was a short memory O, then a quick transition to bikes. We rode through the New Wood State Wildlife Area to get 10 CPs, some on foot. (Each section of the course used a Score-O format.) 29 miles riding, maybe 5 on foot. Transitioned to trek, 2 short mystery challenges, and then worked hard to get 12 CPs in thick brush on USGS maps. Our route included a waist-deep swamp crossing in the fragrant heat. About 5 miles. Then more plotting and back on the bikes only to find my tube had a hole. And so did my spare tube. Erik and I went in the lake looking for the tube's hole, patched it, and were on our way again.

By late afternoon we were chasing down another 7 CPs on a 56 mile ride. It seemed brutal hot to me. My strength had left as we approached Timm's Hill, and my head was spinning as we climbed the fire tower. Two e-caps fixed half the problem, and I felt good by sunset.

We got into plastic canoes in the dark, first paddling upstream on the Wisconsin River. The moon was full and there was fog floating above calm waters. We arrived back at the race start after sunrise.

The final section was more orienteering in the woods just across the river. We got all but 3 CPs before running out of time and heading for the finish.

Green Paw took 2nd place co-ed, 4th overall behind GJ/Wedali, GJ/Wedali2 (with Dave) and Blind Squirrels (with Pete navigating). The race was well organized with some top talent on the course. I think fun was had by all.
