JUKOLA 2012

Team Bushrangers got a pretty good start with Ev and Muzz on legs 1 and 2.
Put me out in position 174.

Got in some good map reading time on the long run out the the start triangle. Sussed out some good routes for the long legs (which I didnt end up taking).
Got out into the forest with a couple of other guys running about the same speed as me. Tracking everywhere already.
The guys in front started to hesitate a little bit so I took the lead over the top of the bare rock on the way to 1. Quickly realised that I was now running by myself... Maybe they didnt like the idea of following someone who had "Australia" written on his back. Had to reassure myself that I was heading the right way. Checked the compass, spiked the control.
Now the others reappeared and maybe had some more confidence in me. We picked up a few more runners on the way to 2. Maybe running in a pack of 8 now. Must have gone into a black hole or something.. I swear we ran about twice the length on the leg and everything was looking pretty dodgy. Decided if we had gone too wrong we would have hit the lake or a track so kept slogging. Out the other side of the black hole, found it.
Took a bit of a different route to 3. I thought it was alright but I never saw those guys again so I cant be sure!
First common control 4 and I am down to position 165! Goin ok.
Came out the other side of a couple of quick controls 4, 5, 6 in another little group of 3 running faster than the first one. The strapping tape on my ankles wasnt quite right and was starting to get quite sore here. Really struggled for a few controls and had to drop a little bit off the guys in front. This worked out better for me anyway as I was quite smooth through the next controls and splits say I over took the 3 teams.. WIN.
Still pretty dark in the forest and theres people everywhere. Next up, long leg 9 -> 10. I decided I would aim my compass left to the big track, run hard and pick up a few of the little foot tracks into the control.. Sweet, looks like these other guys around me have the same idea. So we run in what I think is the direction of the track to the left.. According to what I am pretty sure my compass was telling me. We pick up quite a few guys while we are smashing it through the forest and we are maybe in a pack of 15 or so now. I still think we are heading towards the track but really we are going 90 degrees the other way. A couple of k later we hit a big road, everyone splits looking really confused. I stop for a bit and try to relocate of this powerline above the track. Cant find shit. A couple of guys say something in finnish and run off in the direction of the leg so I got after them thinking if we got too far we will hit the big road behind the control and come back in. Into the black hole again. Another couple of k later and I really have no idea where I am. I only really had one option and that was to keep running after these guys and hope the came into the control, or hit the road behind. another eternity later and we find control 11.. Thanks fuck! finally know where I am. Lets not let that happen a third time.
Threw down a gel at control 13 so lost the few guys I was running with. Didnt see them again but splits says I past them so no complaints there!
Totally forgot the route I had decided for control 17 and ended up going some rookie way through some rough ground. Didnt turn out too bad but I was completely by myself so going was tough!
Forest was getting a bit light now so I could see a bit more.
Running through the forest pretty quick now by myself but I could see a big train of lights about 100m away on my right. Felt like something out of a movie.. Like I was predator haha
Made a shitty parallel error to 19 after passing some massive tracking which I thought was the path. Shit.
bit sloppy through those controls and I missed what could have been passing a few more teams.
Over the road and onto the home straight I wasnt feeling too tired to be honest. Was running with one other guy who had good pace.
Got thrown off by the tracking and had one last shitty mistake on the second last one. Thankfully I threw off a whole group of runners after me too.. Who I could hear yelling angrily as I legged it to the last one.
BOOM! Punched the last one and its time for the run in. This is when the fatigue really killed me. trying to sprint was like death.. Alternating between hammy cramp, quad cramp, hammy cramp, quad cramp, hammy cramp, quad cramp....
Was pretty thankful to hand over to Nick just in time to see Thomas come into the finish with Malung in second!

All up - crazy, crazy race. Didnt have a very good run but I brought the team up to 140th and got 132nd on my leg!
Bring on next year! Yeeeew

Not the hardest map ever but whoever set the courses did a good job of making it a little bit tricky.
Good quick running.
Need to start giving some thought about night orienteering...

Running warm up/down 14:00 [3] 2.0 km (7:00 / km) +40m 6:22 / km

Orienteering intervals 25:00 [4] 5.0 km (5:00 / km) +104m 4:32 / km

Map memory sprint intervals.
Pretty much memorise the leg then go hard to the control point where the next leg is on a map... Repeat.
Might have taken a little bit too long to read each leg but it was still tough running.
Got shat on by 'summer rain' just before we started.. I thought it was meant to be hot for the summer rains like that.

Running warm up/down 12:30 [3] 2.0 km (6:15 / km) +40m 5:41 / km
