2 Oceans?

Road Run race (2 Oceans Ultra) 6:26:20 [3] 56.44 km (6:51 / km) +1008m 6:17 / km
ahr:163 max:204 shoes: Altra Torin 2.0

Got go ahead from Physio to have a go on Thurs and after pretty much 3 weeks off so was a bit skeptical/ scared going in. Figured would see if I could manage a 6hr bronze but if not just try and enjoy it.

First blow was taking 6min to cross the start, that immediately meant needing to increase pace by 10sec per km just to make it up. Did so fine, not sure if paid for it later, recon the bubble burst more due to lack of distance than going out too quick. Easily on pace at half way and had caught and passed the 6hr bus by 5 or 6km. Around half way GPS mileage seemed to go out by about 400m extra, a few others noted the same.

Right calf was tightening near half way so stopped to get it rubbed for a bit, 2 min. Rest was fine, if not good and chilled until Chappies. Chappies was okay with a bit of walking going up but then really hit a wall at about 33km and legs wanted nothing to do with the downhill. Decided to try a Stijn lie down at around 35km for about 3 min which really did wanders although thought at that point there was no ways I had another 21 - 23km left in me.

Battled down Chappies and was by now behind the splits for 6hr with the bus going passed on Chappies, so gave up on that idea and went into survival mode rather. Had an even longer (6min) lie down in Hout Bay, sent a few Whatsapps and took some pics and then hit Constantia Nek.

Was surprised the first bit was runable and then just marched up the last bit. At the top I decided to pull in to the physio station again to rather just feel good for last bit as back was pretty sore (last weeks golf injury?1) so had 2 super physio students working on my back for ages and someone decided to give right calf a working too (not sure how they figured that out, but it was getting tight again, so no complaints). Think they worked on it for quite a bit (7min) until I decided I better get going again, it really felt a lot better.

Had a real second wind at that point and put in some 5:20kms cruising the downhills and flats. Walked the last few uphills and into the finish. Glad I managed to do it. Being realistic I recon I couldn't have done much better on such limited mileage and no speed work however would be nice to have a racing fit go at it some time. Nice birthday run... Moving time closer to 6hrs and just under 6 from mat to mat.
