Adventure race (Killamunda) 5:04:00 [3] 45.83 km (6:38 / km)
shoes: Avanti

It would be easy to be disappointed with todays effort but I had a great time and was really happy with my running and riding... up until some pretty nasty cramps near the finish.
I think I win the prize for first stuff up of the day by running off without my control card before having to turn back and start again. Germany,Ghana,USA,New Zealand and Serbia, off on the bike managing to pass quite a few teams. Lost a few spots when I was with a group who went about 400m past the turn off between 1 and 2. Met up with Jacko and Wil at the turn but I stopped to tighten my map board before 3 and when I got into TA 2 Tooms told me Jacko was about 1 min in front.
This was a bit of a disaster for me, I was going Ok picking up Indonesia and Somalia. A delay getting Brazil then straight onto Ecuador. During this time I had heard from a couple of people at separate times that Kenya was way too low so should be missed. So I ran straight past the turn within a couple of hundred meters of the control before going to the 2 wrong countries and eventually having to go back to Kenya. Ran past Jacko and Juffy who where riding out and lost about 25 mins before getting to that point on the bike.
Pretty smooth through 4,5,6 and 7 then rolled into 8 for the Crumpler challenge. Unfortunately the letters I was finding did not lend themselves to a quick guess however I did let Boltboi know what an alternative solution may be but he was pretty harsh and I had to find a few more before figuring it out.
I went straight past 9 before getting to the power lines and realizing my mistake. On the return to 9 Danger rode past and I quickly calculated how much of a lead he would gain before the end of the MTB leg. At that stage I was still feeling good and I thought I may be able to get the time back for a close finish on the final leg.
Almost went over the handlebars coming downhill towards 10 but it was a blast.
I had to stop about 100m before MW rd due to some pretty severe cramps in my quads. Slowly reeled in another rider coming up the hill before stopping again within sight of FJ park.
Heading out for the final run I had to stop about 4 times on the way to 1 then settled into a walk/jog/cramp/stretch pattern for most of the way. I saw Danger again on my way to 6 but he was heading back towards 8 and there was no way of getting close to him now.
Just before getting 6 I started getting the Quad cramp/Stretch, Hammy cramp/stretch, Quad cramp pattern. I downed about 8 cups of water at control 7 but It was way too late for that to be of any help. Jog/walk/cramp back towards the finish before finally running from the last control to the finish in pain just to stay in front of a guy who had been short coursed, hell I'd take any victory at that stage.

2 major brain fails resulted in most of my lost time. #1 Listening to others on the country leg, If I had just gone to each control I would have finished much quicker. #2 not drinking or eating enough. I only had water in my bladder and drank less than a litre for the entire race. That together with only 2 gels was a major reason for the cramps and cost me a lot in the end . I just don't seem to get thirsty or hungry until it's too late. Next time I think I need to set a time interval on my watch to remind me to drink and eat at regular intervals.

About 7km further than Jacko and Juffy, 5km more than tRicky. A lot of that in the country leg. I certainly got my moneys worth.

Great Job Tooms & Boltboi (and all volunteers), looking forward to the next one.

Good times :-)

Note

Forgot to mention my most costly mistake of the day...
I got home and walked over the just cleaned floor with my dirty shoes on.
Penalized a bit more than 30 mins for that one.

Run 32:20 [3] 5.5 km (5:53 / km)
shoes: Keen Ridgeline

Ran north from Jindalee carpark along the sand tracks.
The rain made it much better than last time. I ran in the 4WD tyre tracks which made the sand firmer for most of the run. Still struggled with some soft sand on some of the steeper hills.
