With not much training in the last couple of months due to a sore hamstring, (which was still bothering me yesterday) I was not sure if I should actually be doing the race today. I figured that if I took things easy & didn't push the pace at any stage it might be ok but knew that the left hammy would fatigue quicker & I would probably be getting some nasty cramps at some stage.
My plan was not to go any quicker than 1 hour for the 1st 10km & try & keep the average close to 6:00/km for as long as possible as long as the legs felt ok.
I was surprised to find that I was running comfortably without any troubles up until the nasty hill on the out & back at the 36km mark. My time to there was 3:34 & avg pace was 5:56/km, I felt I could run all day at this pace.
at the bottom of the hill my hamstring started to cramp badly & I ended up climbing most of the hill with a sideways shuffle. From then on whenever I ran too far without a walk break or upped the pace too much the cramps would start & I had to stop quite a few times to stretch.
Overall I was very happy with how things went. I would have been happy with any finish & was expecting to be closer to 5:30-6:00 hours. Although the leg cramped badly it felt ok otherwise & hopefully will feel back to normal after a couple of days rest.
Good times.
