Exercise Bike 30:00 [2]

Trainer before curling to continue to recover from the Birkie.

Curling 2:00:00 [1]

Solid curling win with one man short, a good workout tonight.

Strength Training 50:00 [1]

Light spin and lift of upper body to get blood moving around and recover a bit.

Exercise Bike 1:10:00 [1]

Light recovery spin on the trainer at home. I borrowed Scott's Cyclops Fluid trainer, it's much stiffer and easier to set up than my cheap nashbar fluid trainer. Worth the money if you're going to use a trainer more than 10 times a year.

XC Skiing race 3:24:27 [5] 50.0 km (4:05 / km)

My first Birkie was a great one. Thanks to everyone for the advice and well wishes that helped make it a great weekend.

As I've heard from others, skiing the first one will likely be my best one -- skiing from the back wave surrounded by relaxed first timers instead of high strung wave one masters with $200 of flouro on their bases. I saw all of the sights for the first time, the powerline hills, the drummers, the icy luges, snowmobile hill, the 39k zone, the hundreds and hundreds of slow hacks blocking the trail on the left, even the super speedy wave 10 first timers that left me in the dust -- everything that makes the Birkie the Birkie.

Personally I had a good race. Kelly was an awesome supporter. She and I parked at telemark and walked down to the start area about 30 minutes before my start. Ten minutes to start I put on my skis and felt the magic of HF6 BD on my bases. (I learned after the race that my HF6 was a solid 10 degrees too warm, but I didn't know, I felt like I was flying!). I walzed up to the front of the flags on got into position one person behind the front line. It was cold, my fingers were freezing. I think it was still below zero.

The gun shot and I soon realized that I was one of the fastest skiers in the wave. I changed lanes during the double pole area and got to the front. (My garmin kept blinking "multiple HR monitors detected not only withinin the start chute, but for the first k!). Within, I donnno, 2k we stared passing wave 8 skiers. What the hell are these people doing out here? Some of them were korte skiers, but some of them were not. Either way, time to hang up the skis and take up baking or something guys. Wave 9 was all about confidence building, all I did was pass people, by the tens, all day long. Awesome!

I went out pretty hard judging from my heart rate, but I made an effort not to sprint or do anything stupid. I was above 170 for most of the first 10k but never hit 180 - firm but steady, just like Bullard told me. I did the first 9k in 33 minutes. At that point I recall thinking, a few times, "this is not as bad as I thought". I thought the lines at the hills would be much worse. The width of the powerline hills was awesome, not too bad. A lot of moving side to side, but that was fine with me. Just as long as I don't get totally blocked in. I was told that the hills at the beginning would be quite crowded and then things would thin out later in the race.

Strangely, thing NEVER thinned out. I'm serious. There were a metric shit of ton of hacks all over all the hills, all the time. All the way to B hill and beyond. In fact, I got more trapped in behind decrepit, cramping, falling no talent at B hill at the 40k mark than any other hill. My heart rate at end of the steepest part of B hill was 161, no kidding! Granted that is my threshold, but still, I was resting on the way up that thing.

That was fine with me though, I was loving the race the whole time. Much easier than running a marathon, easier than the way people had me anticipating. That's not to say I didn't get dizzy down the final stretch, and that I'm not sore today, but I was expecting to get to the "Am I going to be able to finish at this pace?" or even "Am I going to be able to finish at all?", but I really never did.

Part of it may have been smart pacing and hydration. I skipped the first feed. Then at the next feeds I had two cups of HEED and a banana at every stop except OO, where I blew through it to meet Kelly, who had a delicious gatorade, two excedrin, and a warm GU packet for me. Turbo boost!

As I arrived at OO, I checked my watch, EXACTLY 1:30:00. I had heard that was about the halfway point in terms of timing, which put me on pace for a three hour race. That put me in an excellent mood. But, the snow had been falling for about 30 minutes at this point (the winner had been resting for 30 minutes, I later discovered!) and things were slowing down a bit. My tendinitis in my elbow was hurting pretty good by this point so I was hoping the excedrin would keep it at bay. I kept up the steady strong pace until mosquito brook. I was feeling a little bit hungry, so I was super pumped to see Kelly there with a warm GU and a smile. She was at a flat area and the GU was not opened so I kinda yelled at her to open it and at that point she steped on my ski and I went down pretty firmly. She felt terribly and I felt selfish for asking her to open it and not stop completely, it was my fault that I fell, not hers. She said I seemed a bit out of it. I probably was. She caught me on the hill and I was able to slow down a bit and thank her and told her I'd see her at the finish. At some point a bit later, maybe around 43k, I checked my pace and I was right at 3:30 - time to get my butt in gear!

I dug in and climbed the hills hard and got my HR up into the 175+ range here and there again, the first time since the first 15k. I started seeing some dudes that had passed me earlier in the race. My eye was trained to spot wave 9 skiers like a hawk at this point. From time to time one would pass me, and vise versa. Then I hit the lake and started to V2, people were really camping out on the lake, it was fun to hear many of the fans notice my bib color and exclaim "way to go wave 9!" - I was feeding off of anything positive I could at that point to keep up my pace. The last 2 or 3 k was one of the few places I was not checking my watch - the HR data, pace info and timing were a welcome distraction throughout the entire thing.

The race up main street or whatever street that is was a blur, and I crossed the line in 3:24, I was really happy with my effort, I could not have done anything better on race day.

Of course I could have trained more, next year I'll be wave 4 or 3 and train a bit more, maybe even use some pure flouro. That's it for now, I'll proof read tomorrow.

Exercise Bike 50:00 [1]

Easy spin while watching Survivor. That show is addicting.

XC Skiing 1:20:00 [3] 19.0 km (4:13 / km)

Headed out to Hyland because it was too nice and sunny not to. Ran into Bullard out there right in the same place he introduced me to orienteering during his legendary Hyland adventure run series.

Did the "Julia loops" workout for the second time--each loop at Hyland once. Comes out to about 19k. The snow was sllllooooowwwww.

Curling 2:00:00 [0]

went up 5-1, but they tied it 5-5 in the last end. We took it down in extra ends, and it felt good.

Yowsa!!! 1:00:00 [3]

Today was the longest Yowsa session I've ever put in. I started around 10AM and did not finish until 4:45PM. That does not even take into account getting the car stuck last night at 11:30 trying to get into my neighborhood -- what's more, I never could, so Crusher and I had to park at Wal-Mart and walk a mile home down the middle of the road at midnight!

I did most all of today's yowsa with a snowthrower, so I'm not logging that time, although I was manhandling that beast - I borrowed my friend Ben's new alley muncher 3000. Thing was awesome. I did a minimum of an hour of shoveling between getting my car stuck, and doing the steps and details of the three properties cleared out today, so I'm logging that time. I am spent!

Running 1:00:00 [3] 4.9 mi (12:15 / mi)

Laced up the gore-tex, gaiters and goggles and hit the deep stuff with the MoBiz Crush crew. Ate Biz's homemade from scratch chili and saw King's Speech afterward. I rate the run a 7, the chili a 10 and the movie a 7.5.

XC Skiing 1:11:00 [3] 19.5 km (3:38 / km)

Thought I'd stay our for a few hours until I saw the snow, or lack thereof. Icy and bare and not that fun. It was pretty warm and sunny and the snow was fast, so it's wasn't all bad.

Exercise Bike 1:10:00 [4]

Took a spin class at "cyclequest" in edenprairie. Kelly and I bought a groupon 12 pack. Good workout and they have great Keiser bikes. Averaged 206 watts over 70 minutes.

orienteering 1:00:00 [2]

I had such a great time watching everyone last night, really, really enjoyed listening to you all at different parts of the course, sneaking around watching the headlamps dance around. I'm not sure if it's more fun to participate in an OTNT or host one. For me last night, it was hosting. After listening like a fly on the wall to Julia reference the fire pit while Mike was referencing the area directly south of the zoo while they conferenced at CP8, I was worried it may be too easy, so I sprinted to Icarus's lair to see if anyone was hot on his trail. They were not, but only 30 minutes later, people were beginning to crack the code.

Thanks to everyone who hunted!

Darryn requested that I post the clues and the clue writer's explanations (per winter carnival practice), so here they are:

Clue #1

Friends think that I shall never see
A poem as lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Clue #2

If you thought that you could win
By shutting off your mind and running
You need to think again
Tonight’s winner will be cunning.
Stay prime to finish first,
Don’t and you’ll be cursed.

Clue #3

Rightfully aimed the whale’s mouth,
He faces to the south.
He’s made of trails and a dream,
Eyeing peaches and cream.

Clue #4

Every clue has help burning within it,
Look from different angles, don’t sit.
First let your sins,
Guide you to a win.

Clue #5

Pond, prairie, pit or parkway,
It’s one of the three,
Look near the easternmost,
Icarus is hung on a tree.

Clue #6

In the trails near your thumbs,
Moby Dick swims down from the zoo,
If you stop and look closely,
He may wink at you.

Clue #7

Tips: If you’re near a cage
or a sport per the same
look elsewhere ‘cuz the right area, is:
Rife with rage

Clue #8

One man’s struggle to take it easy
Is another man’s bliss
Draw a line north from this
Don’t take a day off, you’ll find it easy-breazy.

Clue #9

A bus stop might help you,
Go straight west from this one
It’s named after Ferris?
And a software antiviris?

Clue #10

Clue 7 gave you an anagram,
Look here or look for naught.
Clue 1 gave you an poet,
Go 250 meters northwest from his spot.

Clue #11

Skillful navigators, if you want to play,
Just deposit one Tolkein.
Go to this world and stay,
‘cuz here Sauron hid Icarus the unicorn.

Clue #12

If you know where Icarus was put
Count 20 paces north, but not on the ground
Count only your left foot,
Then come tell me what you found.

Leave Icarus there, hidden in his nook,
There may be others who come to take a look.
Tell me what you saw, crowds will cheer,
Or at the very least, I will buy you a beer.

And below, insight it my thinking, the "clue writer's explanation":

The solution is the fire pits. Specifically, the easternmost pit. 20 paces north of which lies the prize. There are few different ways to hone in on the eastern fire pit scattered throughout the clues, and the last clue tells you exactly what to do if you don’t find it right away while looking in that area.

#1 The “medallion” is in a tree, that’s the main message here. Secondly, the poem was written by Joyce Kilmer, whose memorial fireplace is not far from the medallion. Clue 10 tells you exactly what do with your knowledge if you recognize or smart phone search the poem.

#2 This clue was also rather oblique, but similar to the real carnival hunt, the first few clues don’t give anything away. The reference to primacy (and the word “first” in the same sentence) tells the cunning hunter to pay attention to the first letter of each clue. The first letters of the first clues spell FIRE PIT.

#3 A reference to the whale shaped trails near the medallion. Clue 6 further describes the location of the whale. The peaches & cream references the color of the “open field” area of the map, in which the medallion is hidden.

#4 The reference to your sins refers to the 7 deadly sins, the first letter of the first seven clues gives you the answer to the puzzle. The word “burning” used, to reference the fire pits.

#5 You likely don’t know the location is “fire pit” yet, but when you do, this clue tells you to go to the eastern fire pit. The clue also references the “three” pits in an obscure/fun way. I did put the word pit third intentionally, but was surprised that more than one successful hunter used this detail to make his breakthrough.

#6 More help recognizing the whale shape on the map, the X’s in the circle are it’s eye. Also, if not the whale then at least south of the zoo in general.

#7 A few places where the medallion is not, as well as a hidden anagram spelling the location – look at the capitol letters to find the anagram.

#8 References to Ferris Bueller, the road Beulah is directly south of the fire pits, and you were given a google map with this road name on the flip side of your O-map.

#9 The bus stop straight east of the fire pit is the “beulah/horton” stop. Intentional misspelling of antivirus, and question makes signal that clues don’t exactly match spelling of bus stop. (Norton/Horton and Bueller/Beulah)

#10 Tells you a bit more of what to do with some of the clues above that were obscure.

#11 This clue refers to “The Lord of the Rings”, the fire pits are rings.

#12 This clue tells you where to go once you’ve solved the puzzle – you were looking for the three fire pits. Specifically, the eastern pit.

orienteering 50:00 [2] 4.0 mi (12:30 / mi)

Jogging around checking out CP locations for the treasure hunt. I'm excited for it, I hope people enjoy it. I have really enjoyed putting this one on. The clues I have written could always be better but I have 3-4 hours into them already and think they will be difficult, but solvable for at least some cunning runners. I'd post my garmin data for this workout, but I'd have to kill you after you viewed it.
7 PM

XC Skiing 35:00 [3] 9.3 km (3:46 / km)

Got out for a quick ski after vetting the OTNT course and before curling, the snow was super fast!

8 PM

Curling 2:10:00 [0]

My first experience skipping a curling game, didn't go perfectly, but not too bad. We lost 9-6. Our skip is up in Fargo at nationals, 2-2 so far, but still in contention to make the final four, who have a "final" next weekend for the title.

orienteering race 1:23:00 [5] 6.5 mi (12:46 / mi)

What a day at Riverbend nature center. Awesome weather and an awesome course. 90-minute score-O has always been my favorite orienteering format and this one was one of the better. Winter off trail travel was really slow, (I don't know how and Andrei cleared the course as fast as he did), but that works itself into strategy and did not make is any less fun than a summer meet. I had a good run with only one two-minute mistake and maybe a few other 30 second ones. Good course by MoBiz!

I started my garmin at 217, my second control. I had my HR strap on but apparently it didn't pick up the data, bummer! I was redlining nearly the whole race.

My route choice, if not apparent from the GPS data was 220, 217, 218, 221, 22, 205, 202, 201, 204 (should have grabbed 203 first) 205, 210, 209, 223, 211, 215, 214 (skip 212) 213, 206, 216, 217, 219.

Event: Snowgaine!

XC Skiing 1:40:00 [3] 18.0 km (5:33 / km)

Fun group skiing with MoBiz, Jesse Stueve, Julia and the doctor. Nice relaxed pace made for good conversation.

Cycling 1:36:00 [3]

Best leb ride of the winter. The snowmobile tracks have set up well and scott and I were able to get in the x and the xx and an intermediate loop.

Thursday Feb 10, 2011 #

XC Skiing 40:24 [4] 9.84 km (4:06 / km)
weight:190.8lbs

Got out for the second ski ski since the Pepsi Challenge - I need to get out more often, but for a few reasons, none of them too compelling, I've not been getting out. This maybe be related due to the fact that I'm still at 190lbs. I need to pull it together, it's just a bit harder in these dark months.

Sunday Feb 6, 2011 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

Got in an intermediate lap at Lebanon. They got permission to use a snowmobile now to pack out the trail-awesome!

Saturday Feb 5, 2011 #

Cycling race 15:00 [5]

Loopet ice bike race! Unfortunately I got a front tire flat about 10 minutes in. Fortunately this freed me up to pit stop Biz when he flatted 10 minutes later.

Snowshoeing 1:30:00 [3]

Hiking around the ice bike race/skijoring/luminary loopet throughout the day, enjoying the awesome loppetness.

Friday Feb 4, 2011 #

Cycling 1:00:00 [3]

Ice bike training. Headed to the course to practice and get a feel for my buddy scott's bike-I borrowed it for the weekend because my studded tires are 26" but I don't own a 26" bike any longer.

Thursday Feb 3, 2011 #

9 PM

Broomball! 50:00 [4]

A slow start and then we flipped the switch a la sly stalone "over the top". An 7-0 drubbing that felt good. Playoffs next week.

Note

I'm 189.8 this morning, so down 3-4 pounds in the first 10 days. Skiing all day everyday this past week helped I'm sure. I'm happy with progress thus far. 5 more pounds minimum before the birkie. I'd love to be 180, but let's be realistic, I still loves me some cookies here and there.
