Medallion Hunting 2:00:00 [1]

Another night of digging in the woods, another night of defeat. At least the magicshine is the best light anybody has out there.

Medallion Hunting 3:00:00 [0]

Three more hours at Tony Schmidt Park in Arden Hills. We are sure it's in this park now, but we can't find it. Hopefully tonight's clue narrows it down a bit.

Running 19:21 [5] 3.1 mi (6:15 / mi)

Speedwork. Another 5k at race pace. This one was tough. I was still sore from the two broomball games on Friday and Saturday. Felt a bit uncoordinated at the end.

Broomball! race 1:00:00 [4]

Good co-ed game. Kelly came to the park to babysit Reed's kid and then ended up having to play the entire game because we only had two women. Ended up losing 4-2, but the other team was quite good so no disappointment.

Medallion Hunting 1:15:00 [1]

Medallion Hunting at Tony Schmidt park in Arden Hills.

Damn thing just keeps eluding me.

Broomball! 1:00:00 [5]

Men's league game. Ice was terrible, really grippy, so this game was a track meet. Very competitve, my HR was through the roof a few times, maybe 10 times. Good win, 4-1.

Medallion Hunting 3:30:00 [1]

We were really excited about the prospect of the medallion being at Battle Creek, on the east side, south of 3M and O'day road. We searched deep into the night, but to no avail. A fun night.

Running 45:48 [4] 6.2 mi (7:23 / mi)

Did the full 10k to see how the legs felt at the full goal distance. Also did the entire run at 1 percent incline, which makes a difference. I have done most of my training at 0 or .5 percent, both of which are discernable.

The pace felt fine, although brisk. The distance dragged on a little bit as well. Not as easy effort, probably within 3-4 minutes, so 10% of max effort. I have been doing some PT for my back this week, and I actually think it may be helping. In the past i have not felt any improvement. But I hope to be onto something this week with it. Good run.

Medallion Hunting 3:00:00 [1]

Biz and I, and Andrei later, scoured the steep hills of Cherokee Park and Lilydale. We are deep down the rabbit hole. But it's good to be here. Lots of great hiking. The size of Echo Cave is amazing, you could fit 1000 people in there. And so warm!

Curling 2:00:00 [1]

In my opinion, this was our greatest win in team history outside of the winning the club champs. The team we played was a team that beat us last season as was not gracious about it. We were down 6-0 in this game and they continued to not be gracious. To be fair, this was largely the acts of the skip, and not the entire team. But, we came back, and we won by one. It was awesome. I am certain we have never come back from 6 down, or even 5 down. Fun night at the curling club.

Medallion Hunting 1:00:00 [1]

First hour of medallion hunting. This year, they also hid 1000 mini-medallions. I came home empty handed, but didn't cover a ton of ground. Spent most time exploring inside neat trees and a few caves I came across. (caves are out of bounds for medallion, but they're cool!). I hope to head out again tonight after the O-meet.

orienteering race 1:30:00 [5] 12.1 km (7:26 / km)

Fun score-o course! Alas, It was not a good day for me. Nothing terrible, but tons of little nagging stuff. I started out alright on the first 5 or 6 controls. Then I turned my ankle and fell hard, and slowed the pace a bit. Then, my punch stopped working (turns out I forgot to clear and check, so my run became unofficial according to pres with whom I ran for most of the race). I started to feel the 30k of skiing from Saturday in my hammies. Then some hunger, and it was 1PM and probably should have had a light lunch. Then I got a blister, about the size of a quarter.

Made for a bit of a pedestrian effort overall, but solid, and still able to have fun. I enjoyed being outside. Control retrieval was fun too. It was good to get out.

Medallion Hunting 3:00:00 [0]

Biz Brian and Jim and I went out in the Silver Bullet. We started at Crosby Farm around 8:30. Plucked two mini medallions there! That was fun. Then we went up to Highland, that park was turned over like crazy! Then we finished up around midnight in Linwood. We'd tell you the reasons we went to those parks, but we'd have to have you killed. Medallion hunting is serious fun.

XC Skiing 2:25:00 [4] 31.0 km (4:41 / km)

Birkie tour. Good snow. Great skiing. Cold! Skied first half with Reed and Meghan and then picked up the pace. Turned around when I got to telemark, to get a few extra K's in.

Strength Training 10:00 [4]

Did alternating sit-ups and pull ups (on finger block recently mounted above entrance to bonus room).

Note
(rest day)

Legs are tired from last two days.

Running 25:11 [5] 4.0 mi (6:18 / mi)

I set out to go further than my previous best at Kelly's race pace. I did 5k last time. Today my goal was to go 4 miles. I felt ok until around 2.25, then my stomach started to feel a little sloshy. I drank 16 ounces of water about 15 minutes before the run. By 3.5 I didn't feel great and was not sure if I'd finish. Giving up sucks though so I toughed it out. This was my hardest speed workout to date for sure. The fast run yesterday was certainly a factor. Feels good to be done though!

Tuesday Jan 17, 2012 #

Running 54:00 [4] 6.8 mi (7:56 / mi)

Longish hard run on the river bottom trails near my house. Felt good after resting most of the prior 5 days.

Monday Jan 16, 2012 #

XC Skiing 1:15:00 [3]

Got some good skiing in on MLK day, as is tradition now. Pete W has organized a long ski for three years in a row now. Conditions were ok, but my new boot was really digging into my ankle bone, which made me happy to stop skiing.

Curling 1:45:00 [1]

Blowout loss to the second best team in the league. A disappointing performance.

Saturday Jan 14, 2012 #

Running race 5:00 [5] 0.8 mi (6:15 / mi)

Jogged around a bit today watching the trials, but I did work up a big sweat running next to the women's leaders to the finish from about 25.4 to the finish. They were moving really fast!

Running 25:00 [3] 2.0 mi (12:30 / mi)

Jogging out to and subsequently across the "buffalo bayou" in Houston to see the mens and women's Olympic trial races.

Friday Jan 13, 2012 #

Strength Training 1:05:00 [3]

Stole away from the pre-race scene in Houston to get a workout in. Being surrounded by this kind of energy provides plenty of motivation to work hard.

Tuesday Jan 10, 2012 #

Running 49:00 [3] 5.1 mi (9:36 / mi)

Trail run with Waima and biz around cedar and brownie. Yogurt lab afterward. Awesome.

Monday Jan 9, 2012 #

Strength Training 45:00 [3]

Anytime fitness with crusher over lunch. Upper body stuff.

Curling 1:50:00 [1]

Coming off of our improbable win last week, we choked this week. Disappointing. I think we're only one game above .500 now.

Sunday Jan 8, 2012 #

Cycling 50:00 [2]

Easy spin on the trainer to rid of the broomball soreness. Lots of it!

Saturday Jan 7, 2012 #

Cycling 2:20:00 [2] 28.5 mi (12.2 mph)

Long and steady bike ride/explore with mobiz and Scotty.

Friday Jan 6, 2012 #

Broomball! 50:00 [4]

Friday night is men's league. We got a W, I think the score was 4-0. Good to see the old crew. Lots of different muscles got worked on the ice. I am going to be sooo sore.

Thursday Jan 5, 2012 #

Broomball! 50:00 [4]

First broomball game of the season. I signed up for co-ed on thursdays and men's league on Fridays this year so it will be busy, but it's a short season. I hope it will help with speed since it's lots of sprinting, but that may be wishful thinking. Tough opponent our first game, we never really had a chance, and lost badly.

Wednesday Jan 4, 2012 #

Running 19:32 [5] 3.1 mi (6:18 / mi)

Tonight was blocked off for another speed workout. I didn't find a new year's 5k to register for so I figured tonight would be a 5k time trail. I warmed up for a half mile and then reset the shredmill and hammered out a 5k at goal pace (6:18/mile). It was tough, but not even as bad as my first few training sessions. I'm getting faster.

Running 10:00 [3] 1.1 mi (9:06 / mi)

Warm up and cool down for 5k, feels euphoric to finish a good fast run.

Tuesday Jan 3, 2012 #

Running 1:18:00 [3] 8.0 mi (9:45 / mi)

Met up with Molly for an OTNT fill-in workout. We got a nice steady 8 mile in down at the fuge. Which is the national wildlife refuge that virtually shares it's parking lot with her office.

Curling 2:00:00 [1]

After losing 4/5 after getting our slick new jackets, we rolled into the club to start the second half of the season against the only undefeated team in the club. We took it to them hard from the start, not taking the one-point handicap that was assigned us for our draw. After the third end, we were up 4-1. We curled well all night, ending their dream season and righting our sinking ship. A great win for the home team.

Cycling 2:35:00 [5] 30.0 mi (11.6 mph)

No name 68.

Started from GJ's house. He's fit, dang was he hammering tonight. I attribute some of it to his fully rigid bike with narrower and studded tires at 60 psi (I was fully suspended with 2.2's at 30 psi, to help with the icy conditions) but still he had me racing this whole thing, including the trip from his house to the start.

We mapped out a good loop and rode fast for the entire course. Then we did a typical gearjunkie Puzak move and realized we had missed a checkpoint that was across town. Of course, we realize later that not only had we ridden right by the CP, we were in the lead by five minutes when we had to ride back. At that point I had already eaten one GU, and was about to bonk again, as I could not keep up. Another GU down and I was back on his wheel.

In the end, instead of being at or near the top we finished mid-pack. Which was fine for me, I had a blast battling to keep up with GJ and seeing the sights and sounds of the city. Alleycat racing is always a good time, even when cold and windy. We had some gusts that nearly stopped us in our tracks.
