The buffalo Triathlon. 1 mile swin, 25.5 mile bike, 10k run.
SWIM - went alright, but the only reason it was not terrible is because Biz gave me his sweet wetsuit again. Without it I would have been toast. The swim was hard enough with it on. It was a very crowded course with people on both sides of me for about half of the swim. I breathed water in twice and did not really get into a rhythm until the second half. My time was not that good, but I did not expect it to be. The last time I swam was last year's Buffalo Triathlon. Not kidding. 28:10.
T1 - 1:48 - slow, but not too bad. Getting Biz's wetsuit off is not super easy (fat man in a little suit), and the last thing I wanted to go was tear it or put a finger through it. Plus, coming out of the water and up a 40 foot hill was not easy.
BIKE - Left it all out there. Passing dudes that have $5,000 triathlon TT spaceship bikes, disc wheels, team singlets and big egos, while on my cyclocross bike, is probably among my most favorite things to do. 1:07:00, a hair over 23 mph. Great bike split, I think my fastest ever.
T2 - Totally fell apart. I could not stand up, back was seized and my groin/inner hamstrings were torn up and really sore/siezed. I left it all on the bike, especially dropping a guy on a new P4 with freshly shorn legs, that really took it out of me. 2:59 - an embarrasingly slow time. I think first timers who were dialing in their IPods had faster T2 splits than I did. I could not move.
RUN - first mile was slow. I felt like I was running 9 or 10 min/mile. Pain cave. Big time. It was hot. I was overheated and dehydrated. The second mile I got passed by a guy that was pushing 250lbs. The third mile the water and gatorade that I was drinking started to get my rehydrated (I did not drink nearly enough on the bike) and I started coming around. The last three miles felt fast. 48 minutes - 7:47/mile. Decent. Slower than most my tri splits, but not by much. I'm usually around 7:20-7:30. I was pleasantly surprised with the end result, but overall rate the run as just OK.
Kelly passed me well on the first half of the run though, so that was a bit hard, but not too hard - she won her age group and we think was in the top 5 overall for the amateurs! Her swim and run splits were the same (ish) as last year but she cut her bike split by 7 minutes! She was SWIM-26:00, BIKE-1:14, RUN 36:47. Fast!
Hot and sunny but overall beautiful and fun out there. One of the best, probably the best triathlon in the state.
Chris Leigh flew in from Australia again to win by over 5 minutes and it was a fun to see him and hear him speak again - what a beast. He did the 10k in 5:31/mile. (Swim in 19:00 and Bike in 57:00).
