Running 45:59 [4] 6.2 mi (7:25 / mi)
I've been considering taking my running training up a notch over the last few weeks. I think it's mostly been motivated by Kelly's inspirational efforts, but also because the lebanon single track is not much fun to ride when cold/covered with ice/snow. I'm a goal oriented person, it gives me direction and makes for easier decision making when the work day is winding down and I ask myself what I'm going to do for a workout.
One goal I really like, but I've been hesitant to take on, is to run Kelly's 10k split from her Olymipic trial qualifying effort in the marathon. You'd think that a farily fit dude could take on his girlfriend's marathon's 10k split without much trouble. Problem for me is that she crossed the 10k split at 38:40. That's 6:15 per mile for those of you keeping score. Yikes! My PR is two minutes slower than that, and that was 8 years ago when I was a decent triathlete, and running 3-4 times a week before my back was bad. So, I don't like the fact that it may not be possible.
But hey, it's a good way to put into perspective Kelly's accomplishments, right? That's what I figure. So, here begins my first training regarding this goal.
Tonight's goal was to (1) run 10k and (2) to do one mile at goal pace. So, I ran the third mile at pace. Good thing was that I was able to do it without cramping or hurting too bad. But it was really tough, not too far from blowing up. Felt like I could do about 2, maybe 2.5 miles at that pace before I blew up. I did the other miles between 7:30 and 8 minutes per mile. In the end I was a full mile behind her, so I was about one sixth slower. Emasculating? Perhaps. For me, I'll take that as a decent starting point...
Feels good to be done. I'll do at least one run with this goal in mind per week for a while, up to her run in Houston and perhaps beyond.
Initial indication confirms that what she did was impossible for most humans. Really stupid silly fast.
