XC Skiing race 3:07:24 [5] 50.0 km (3:45 / km)

Birkie #2 a success despite the lack of snow this year. I felt weak to start, as I felt a bit sick the night before (Kelly is at home sick for the weekend). The powerline hills felt really steep. But my skis were fast as hell. Faster than I have ever felt. I've never used fancy wax before this year. I knew I needed it this year, given that I had skied only four times prior to the Birkie.

After a GU and some warm heed I got warmed up and feeling a bit better.

I started in wave 5 and it was tough to make my way through the field. A bit easier than wave 10 last year, but not by much. By 00 it was still crowded. I came though in about 1:28. People say that's halfway, but it's BS. It wasn't last year, so I knew to account for that.

But, what was going on? I felt sick and slow, yet I was on pace to ANNIHILATE my PR of 3:24? Big thanks to the chemist who stripped the bonded hydrogen molecules out of my wax and replaced them with fluorine molecules, those things hate water something awesome!

After 00 the slow skiers had been passed, the classic skiers were east on the new trail (maybe?) and the Korte skiers had turned back. I was free to open up the throttle, doing V2, my strength. I got my breathing into a rhythm and could tell that body was not going to let me down. it was still sunny with a light snow that made the air shimmer. I was feeling the endorphins.

My left quad got twitchy/cranky here and there but with a little GU and probably a little bit of overworking my right lat/tri I was able to compensate.

I hit the lake at 2:59, still feeling the rush of adrenaline, I remembered how much the lake hurt last year when I maxed out on it. I figured I could do it again and I tried, thinking: "I made wave 3 by seconds because of my lake effort last year, I can do it again". Oh man was it tough. A wave 6 woman passed me as I tried to latch on but she was too strong. My form was fading, not enough quad strength to get a powerful push and weight transfer. My right arm felt good still though so I used it for all it was worth. I was still passing people by the tens. Could I break 3:07? I knew that was the wave 2 cut off last year so not knowing what it would be this year, I tried to hit that mark.

Crossed in 3:07:24. How did I PR by 17 minutes on a year when the course was 5 minutes slower and I didn't train? I don't know. But I couldn't be happier about it. Last year I said wave 2 was my goal and I made it. Jerritt also had a monster birkie skiing to 160th place (approx). He skied the same pace I did, but was on classic skis, how is that possible!?

I think I know the answer to these questions: Norse Beast Mode.

XC Skiing 1:15:00 [4] 19.0 km (3:57 / km)

It was a tough call to skip an O training session, but I had to get my 4th ski of the year in before the Birkie. Headed up to Elm Creek and got 9 laps in before my left quad was toast. The Birkie is going to be really painful I'm afraid.
