Premier Reserve Championship Quarter Final (24th August 2pm)

Bredagh 0-9 Saval 1-11 Cherryvale

A disappointing game, with the same team that beat Castlewellan the last day in the championship, quite a few of the old Bredagh failings came back to haunt us. Was a wet old day at Cherryvale, field was nice and dry until 15 mins from the start which unfortunately necessitated gloves. Lined out at full back as usual, but as has become common, within long, I was switched onto their most dangerous forward, as it seems I'm the go-to man whenever we identify the opposition danger man. The problem was it took the management 30 mins to do that, by which time he'd chalked up 4 points and let them take a 5 point HT lead..... held him to a single point in the second half, was a very tricky man to mark, was very intelligent with his runs, but I stuck with him all the way, and the only time he really got the better of me was a classy 45 yard effort when I thought I had the angle covered, so I can't complain. Fitness showed up remarkably well in the last 15 mins, in spite of the reduced training over the last 10 days or so. Again though I wasn't happy with a couple of dealings with high balls, once myself and Tony got in a stupid tangle through lack of communication, but we eventually luckily managed to turn it over, before of course Niall goes and immediately gives the ball away again leading to a point....

The positives are that I am clearly by far and away our most important defensive player at the moment, and the Senior assistant manager was at the game to see me. I'm still refusing to back to Senior training though, I'm not going through last year again, so until they come to me and say "look Paddy, we need you in the team, get down to training", I'm staying put training with the Seconds. It's strange how things go, a while ago I was wondering if I would be happy enough playing a bit of Thirds football, and wondering if I'd ever really play and enjoy the football again. Now I'm back and playing even better than last year, but more importantly, I'm carrying on the pure enjoyment of playing for the love of it, from my experiences with soccerball in Belgium. Stubbornness will prevail though with the Firsts, the ball is in the management's court to call me up. Which so far they haven't.
