Lubrecht Experimental Forest, Long Advanced, 7.1 km, 4th. I really left my brain in the car for this one. Overlapping terrain to the day before (the first half was on new stuff. Forecast was for temps in the 30s F and rain all day. Fortunately, the forecast turned out to be wrong, because it actually snowed all day. About half the ground had an inch of so of snow (anywhere it wasn't sheltered by foliage). I was dressed warmly enough, but just barely. (Or maybe I wasn't, and the stupidity was due to my brain being cold.) The disaster started on the second control, where I guess I initially just didn't go high enough up the reentrant system, then headed too far west. I went up to the top of the ridge to relocate and found a neglected (ummapped) trail remnant which I misidentified as the jeep trail on the map. My next attack was based on that misconception as to where I was, and of course it didn't work out. I went up to the top again and this time found the real jeep trail, and then it was fairly easy. I did consider throwing in the towel during all this, and I was figuring that I had probably lost about 20 minutes, but apparently it was only 19.

Missed a little to the left on #3 (small time loss), then went for another walkabout on #5, misreading the flattish contours up top, and may have even gone slightly off the map. A little futzing around at #6 allowed Steve Tarry to catch me. I then got my act in gear and made good time for the next three controls and most of the way to #10, which was a repeated control from the day before and I missed it slightly and it took me five minutes to correct. Unbelievably far off on my heading going to #13 (I probably wasn't even looking at my compass), off a little on the way to #15, and the rest was fine.

I got it done, there's that. When I finished, Boris was looking at the results and said, "Ooh, you got Harbucked!", and I replied, "Yeah, and I'm about to get Tarryed, too!". (Which I did.)

Huge thanks to Boris Granovskiy, Grizzly Orienteering, and all the other helpers who made this weekend happen. It was an awesome experience in every respect!
