orienteering race 1:53:19 [3] *** 5.4 km (20:59 / km)
spiked:5/13c shoes: VJ Integrator #2

Fort Rock, set by Deb Humiston, in a couple of inches of snow. Better turnout than feared (maybe as many as 20 people total). I helped out with regsitration for a while, then set out for my pathetic run. This went badly on many levels. The neoprene socks were a good idea, and the O shoes were a good idea, but the combination was not (insufficient room), and both big toenails are in trouble. The sole also started coming off of the left shoe, and these are a relatively new pair. Navigation was bad, probably in part due to difficulty seeing things out there because of the snow, but more because of the malfunctioning of my rusty brain. On most of the blown controls I got very close, then couldn't figure out the map/terrain correspondence for the final detailed part. On the worst one, though, the biggest problem was that I had gotten off the north edge of the map, and the reason that I couldn't find the features I was seeing was that they weren't on the paper. Jim Arsenault got me by almost 40 minutes -- he saw me when he got by at #7, but I didn't see him. Still, it was good to get outside and get some exercise, even if it didn't bode well for how things might be going lately.
