orienteering race 5:07:32 [3] *** 26.2 km (11:44 / km) +600m 10:32 / km
spiked:30/33c shoes: VJ Integrator #3

Hudson Highlander, course designed by me. Poor personal race preparation due to all the stuff I was involved with on the organizational side. Took scramble option CDEF, even though I had been figuring that I'd probably do ABEF. But PG was going that way, and it seemed like good company to be in, not that I was with him for long. Got separated when I took a different approach to E (he and the Saegers and Angelica got ahead), but I caught Angelica at E, the Saegers just before F, and PG just after. He got to 9 first (I got stuck in some green), and I was with Angelica for most of the trail run. Those four were all out onto Rockhouse ahead of me, and on the way from 14 to 15, I got hit with bad leg cramps when going through some laurel, and that dropped me to a walk for most of the rest of the race. Lost some time on #15 (I was close, but had to hunt around a little), and on #19 I hesitated about 2/3 of the way up because it looked like I was on top (and looked like the area where the control was), but it was a false summit and there was still one more rise to go. Screwed up my route out of 21 (though what I did turned out to be fine) and bobbled #22 a tiny bit. #23 was bad, I got too high and could see cliffs up ahead and to my right, but couldn't find them on the map. Stood there feeling stupid until Donald LeBlanc showed up (he had repeatedly passed me since #15) and had also screwed it up but was going the right way. The rest was fine, though I wasn't moving very fast at all. Pretty much on my own (other than sporadic LeBlanc sightings) once I started on the Rockhouse map.
