orienteering race (mountain bike O) 1:26:29 [3] ** 8.0 km (10:49 / km)
spiked:8/9c shoes: Nike Initiator

Gay City "Expert" MBO. Lost time on #5 because I initially went to the trail leading out of the NW corner of the clearing instead of the SW, and when I corrected, I still didn't see the control at first. There were quite a few places on the course where the trail looked like something I'm capable of riding, but not as fast as I can push the bike through that section, so that's what I did. Pushed the bike through the woods to cut corners on #7, #8, and #9, although overall my route on #8 was an inefficient mess, and #9 could have been better. (But at least I went to that one.)

orienteering race 1:07:30 [2] *** 5.6 km (12:03 / km)
spiked:7/14c

Gay City "Expert" course. Kind of tired after the mountain bike course, and kind of brain dead. Not having had much to eat yesterday may have been a contributing factor (cereal for breakfast, frito pie for lunch, six Oreos for dinner). Screwed up #1 and #2 pretty seriously (considering how easy they were), got to #5 easily enough but didn't see the flag right away, no problem on #6 except that I looked at every rock that I went by, #7 I was basically right on but walking, on #8 I didn't go right down to the trail like I should have and got stuck in the marshy area that was slower than I expected, blew #9 badly, too far left all the way to the trail (which is pretty distinct), flailed around on #10 and finally went to the cliff that I think it shoudl have been on and found nothing, then after some head-scratching tried the big cliff to the SW and found it, and then the rest was fine. Bleah.

Note

No exercise, but I made it through the work week. Thought about going out for a run in the dark, but didn't.

exercises 1:15 [5]

50 situps, 25 squats. Days at work like the ones I've had this week make it hard for me to imagine remaining at thi particular job beyond the initial six-month contract, which runs out in early November.

orienteering race (canoe-O) 47:11 [3] ** 5.14 km (9:11 / km)
spiked:14/14c shoes: Rugged Outback

Pawtuckaway canoe-O with Aims in the C2 Cruiser. Same course as 2002, though we did it in the opposite direction this time, and finished just under a minute slower. First place, as far as I know. Not too bad for a couple of old guys, and clever of us to avoid the howling winds on Saturday.

orienteering 45:29 [3] *** 3.9 km (11:40 / km)
spiked:14/19c shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 350

Pawtuckaway -- Blue Middle. Biggest mistake by far was on the first control. Well, sort of. I definitely blew that control, but maybe the biggest mistake was before the start when I grabbed the wrong cluesheet, which I didn't realize until I got to #4. So from then on, I had to be certain I was in teh right place, and there a couple of minor time losses when I didn't know what feature I was looking for. I did check the codes, and detected a pattern, so that helped a little. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that there was only a splits printer, and I used my SI6*, so my splits were gibberish and there's no actual confirmation that I was at the right controls, though when I got back and looked at the right cluesheet, it agreed with what I remembered.

orienteering (course setting with bike) 1:50:00 [2] *** 6.5 km (16:55 / km)
spiked:4/5c shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 350

Picking up 7-8-9 from the WHN-O, plus the two westernmost water stop controls from the Ultra. The distance quoted is straight-line, my route with the bike was quite a bit longer. It occurred to me near the end of this that all this mountain bike riding wasn't doing my broken wrist any good.
