paddling 1:43:20 intensity: (25:00 @0) + (1:18:20 @1) 6.15 km (16:48 / km)

Lost Lake, in the yellow boat, and Nancy in the orange one. Got her a new paddle this week with a smaller diameter shaft for her small hands, so I'm back to using the Branches paddle, and I'll give Aims back his fancy one last week -- I wasn't particularly impressed, and there are some things about it that I found annoying.

The level 0 stuff was times when we weren't moving, first because we took shelter under some trees to avoid a period of drizzle, and the second time because we passed a couple of women in kayaks and Nancy realized that one of them was Judy Durling, and we stopped to chat for a while.

Based on memories (some long ago and dim) and some speculation, I managed to build in my mind a loop from my normal WBSE parking spot through the Pearl Hill area, and executed it almost perfectly. I couldn't have done it in the opposite direction, but now having done it once, I should be able to. No pavement or puddles, and now if I want I can add side trails to this loop to extend it. The key was crossing the wet area at the beginning, which should be doable on stepping stones in drier conditions, but required a detour to a log today. Some pretty cool terrain out there, including sand terrain with numerous multi-contour depressions in the campground area.

Common wisdom says that the particular conditions for any given year will be conducive to the proliferation of at least one of the major types of pest insects in these parts, and 2013 looks like it will be an FDF summer. A blue cap would have brought in a reasonable haul. Maybe I should get one of those Foreign Legion hats and spend a couple of hours at Quabbin to see if I can break the record.

I let my boss know that if things don't improve in terms of my duties at work, I'll be looking around for other options. He's on my side, but the problem is his boss, who finds me very useful in my current role. But if he knows that my patience is limited, maybe he'll find somebody else to do this. Or else he'll have to when I'm gone.

paddling 55:10 [1] 4.08 km (13:31 / km) +5m 13:26 / km

Forge Pond with Nancy, this time her in the orange boat and me in the yellow, a relaxing little evening cruise. Looks like the next step is to get her a paddle with a smaller diameter shaft, since her hands are kind of small.
