orienteering race 1:50:11 [3] *** 10.87 km (10:08 / km) +232m 9:09 / km
spiked:17/20c shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 280 #1 (blue)

Pineridge - Red M35. Watch didn't get a satellite lock until about a minute after the start, and I hit the wrong button for the split at the first control. Time includes the deduction for the 56 seconds on the throwaway road crossing leg. 9.0 km, 280 m climb.

OK, less went wrong. Specifically, I lost a little time swing wide on #4 when I let myself be distracted by another runner, then I lost 2-3 minutes in the weird stuff at the inexplicable #11, and lost about 4 minutes at #16 -- I heard later that some folks thought it was misplaced, though even it it was, that doesn't mean that I was necessarily looking in the right place before I found it. Those two splits were both near the bottom of the list, not just mistakes, but mistakes bigger than what others did there.

But that's the wrong, and the rest of it was pretty good. The woods were trashy and the rocky footing was terrible, but that doesn't slow me down as much as it does other people, I suppose. I kept pushing pretty hard the whole way, and wasn't as worn down by the vaccinations that I got on Thursday as I had feared. I ended up 8th for the day and 8th overall, with a couple of scalps. 2nd on M35 (behind the dominant Boris) got me a little bottle of maple syrup, and I would have been 5th on M45 or 1st on M40. Interestingly, the only two people among the top 10 on Red who don't appear to be Slavic (Russian/Ukranian/Polish) are myself and Hannah Culberg. (Not all recent imports with accents, though.)

The awards were a little backwards, though not nearly as bad as the HVO a year or two ago where 1st and 2nd got worthless trinkets, and 3rd got a bag of cider doughnuts. This time is was maple candy for 1st, maple syrup for 2nd, and the bag of doughnuts for 3rd. Fine prizes all, though it still doesn't seem like the right order to me. But I'm not complaining, because Nancy got us the doughnuts. :-)
