US Long Champs, Red M35, Morgan Territory, 8.4 km, 440m, 12th, 3rd US M35. Prerunner, so the temperature was nice when I was running. Not very proud of this one, but my placing wasn't too bad, and only two women got me (though they had the pointless handicap of a 1:15000 map). Over 10 minutes of errors. A little of that was on the first control, not sure if it was the delay in getting over the fence or the fact that I initially turned the wrong way when I got past the cattle at the top of the hill. On #9, I stupidly overran on the trail because I was concentrating on eating gel until I saw the road up ahead, that cost 2.5 minutes. Another couple of minutes was on a sloppy, wimpy route on #13, and a delay trying to figure what in the semi-open area was mapped as a distinct tree. But the big one, five minutes, was being really dumb on #3. I picked a fine route, but then instead of taking the indistinct trail that leads almost o the control, I took a different, unmapped one. The one I took stayed level and went through the woods, but the map showed I should be climbing through the open. It finally dead ended at a big reentrant where I had to pause to realize where I was, which was pretty close but about 10 lines too low. I know better than that, at least, I like to think I do. Less than a minute and a half out of silver, although the guy who edged me out lost over twice as much time on errors as I did.
