pedaling (unicycle) 26:00 [2] 3.7 km (7:02 / km)

I had a meeting at 6:30, which meant that I had enough time after work for a little something, so I threw the wheel in the back of the car and headed down to check out a rail trail that I wasn't familiar with. The particular section I was on wasn't all that appealing; rather urban, and half of it was more like a sidewalk. Might be worth going back and trying the part on the other side of downtown.

I've been riding bicycles (and unicycles) for a lot of years, and I grew up in a very bicycle-oriented home. But in all that time, I've never owned any shorts that were designed for that purpose. I rode from Connecticut to California in 1983 wearing cutoff jeans. But on the way back from Sessions on Sunday, Nancy and I happened on a store that was having a big sale, and I picked up a pair of shorts. I also ride on rather dated equipment most of the time, but it does the job. I guess I'm rather in contrast to the kind of guy who I saw today, all dressed up in fancy bike clothes with sponsor logos and cool glasses and a fancy racing bike, getting ready to... ride on the rail trail. With the joggers and walkers and training wheel kids and unicyclists...

orienteering 1:11:42 [3] 7.66 km (9:22 / km) +193m 8:19 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 280 #1 (blue)

Sessions Woods, Red, 6.1 km, 6th place (I think). Certainly not the cleanest run in the world. Delayed some by laurel on #1, missed uphill a bit on #3, then ran right to the circle and stood there for a bit not realizing the pit was right behind me. Left-hand route on #4, attacked from the SW (the last part was slow). Blithered #8, trying too hard to ignore the unmapped MTB trails and not paying enough attention to the compass. The rest were fine, if not particularly fast.

paddling (kayak) 1:02:11 [2] 6.12 km (10:10 / km) +4m 10:08 / km

Nashua River upstream from David E. Ross and back, yellow boat. I figured I wanted to to about an hour, and also figured that downstream would be about twice as fast as upstream, so that meant 40 minutes before turning around. I kind of wanted to pick some kind of a landmark for the turnaround, and a perfect one presented itself: a downed tree all the way across the river that I couldn't have gotten past without getting out of the boat (and it still wouldn't have been a simple matter).

I must say, I'm really impressed by whatever heuristic Ken has implemented for guessing what activity type I did when I upload from my GPS watch. I just did two sessions, and it correctly picked "paddling" and "orienteering" out of my own activity list. I don't know what criteria he uses, but it's working pretty well.

Note

Pretty weird experience for Friday the 13th, though not as bad for me as for somebody else: mid-morning, my boss was apparently told to pack up the personal items from his office and was escorted from the building. And at 11:00 his direct reports were called into a meeting and we were told that his employment at the company had been terminated, and they couldn't tell us any more about it.

pedaling (road bike) 31:23 [3] 12.64 km (2:29 / km) +127m 2:22 / km

I finally got around to putting the cyclometer that I bought a while ago onto the bike, and I had time for a quick spin, "around the block". Need to remember that the pavement on Tyler Road sucks, and I should definitely avoid going there unless they resurface it. I was looking forward to getting to the end of it, but I took the right and found that Gilchrest St. had been completely ripped up, so I was riding on dirt until I got to the Lunenburg line.

A little jaunt on the Incubus, beautiful evening. Caught a whiff of some lilacs.
