paddling (kayak) 1:36:42 [1] 6.82 km (14:10 / km)

Merrimack north from Tyngsborough and back, orange boat with Nancy (GPS snarfed from her log because I forgot my watch). Generally a leisurely outing. She vetoed my interest in climbing up some storm drain tunnels, because she's less unhinged than I am. And I didn't have a light with me.

orienteering race 1:19:08 [3] ** 8.06 km (9:49 / km) +282m 8:22 / km

Letchworth A-meet, M35, 7th in category, 19th on RedX, but hung onto my placings from yesterday in the overall. Felt old and slow and bald, but managed to be not too sloppy, even though it felt like I was. Usually SA tells me that I had more time in errors than I thought, but this time it was less, and it missed some places where I felt I lost time.

1-5 went fine, though I did run right past #3 on the way to #4 (only a minor detour). #6 was indeed an error, due to failure to read the map closely enough. There was a spine just uphill from the control, and the right move would have been to just run along the base of the spine. But I went up on top of it, and when I spotted the control just behind me off to the right, I made an uncontrolled sliding descent down what's mapped as a steep earth bank t get to it. 7-9 were fine, and on #10 I went a bit wide to the right to avoid dropping too far down into the reentrant (although, duh, the reentrant pointed the other way and I dropped deeper). The climb up was slow and cautious, so I did lose time, and I really wasn't sure where I was, but I did spike it. I expected to see time loss on #11 because I detoured to check the code on a control that appeared to be on the right kind of feature despite that fact that I hadn't gone nearly far enough. #12 was a slight miss, but diluted by the fact that it was a long leg. #13 shows up as a time loss, just being careful that I didn't run past it, so I went to the stream early and followed it down. #14 was fine, and #15 was dead-on, except that I read the wrong line on the cluesheet and thought that the code didn't match. I headed off to look at a nearby feature, but then doublechecked the code and turned back (SA didn't catch this). #16 perfect, #17 was a miss that SA didn't catch (off to the right on the final attack), and so on to the finish.

Warm and I think a touch humid, enough that my glasses were fogged some of the time. More interesting/enjoyable ourse than uyesterday. Not too unhappy with my performance, and quite impressed with Nancy's victory. Well done!

Long drive home. Time for sleep.
