US Champs Long, Bishop Lake, 8.9 km, 300 m 10th/34 on course. Not too bad.

This felt like a very clean run, so it was interesting that SA has me with 7:30 in time losses. Let's see where that all came from.
On #1, I went right at the start triangle in order to start out going through white woods. The big open marches provided a great handrail, and I had the 5th best split, my best of the day. (For some reason, Livelox showed my route correctly on this, but I had to adjust RouteGadget quite a bit.) No problem reading the contours to #2. On #3 I swung a bit wide to the right to stay away from the mapped green, but went directly to the control. I guess that was overdoing it, SA shows 49 seconds lost. On #4, I definitely made a mistake -- short leg, I was on target, but near the end spotted a control to my right, and was drawn in by its gravitational pull. I knew it looked wrong, but got close enough to read the code, and saw that it was, of course #5, and that made #4 easy to get to (just over a minute lost), and easy to get back to #5.

Foor the long leg #6, as soon as I hit the trail I turned left and went back to the start triangle. The approach from there was pretty good, despite the fact that at one point I was slightly right of where I had intended (in the vicinity of #16), and felt like I had gone a long way without reaching the trail I was looking for. Slight lapse of confidence, but I pressed on, found the trail, and had no trouble getting to the control. Alex caught me here, and as she headed to #7 by going a little left to miss the green, I didn't feel like watching her scamper away, so I went straight, the green wasn't to bad, and I found it with no trouble. I took the faint trail NNE out of there, and it was only as I reached #8 that Alex caught me again, and I had another good split. Leaving there, she got to the road ahead of me as I got stuck in a little green, and she easily pulled away on the road as I ate a gel. We left the road at the same spot, and as I came into the control, I saw her already on her way out. 38 seconds lost probably attributable to the gel.

I did stop for water at #9, but the 55 seconds lost is presumably just my moving slowly, because I think my route to #10 was fine, and I spiked it. On #11 I show 1:16 loss, although it was another spike. My route right of the line was probably the reason, as it required more climb, but gave me good visibility approaching the terrace. #12 was my biggest loss of the day, at 1:46. I guess contouring to the left was the issue, though the going was easy -- up and over to get to the trail must have been a lot faster. There was also a little bit of time wasted at the end because I didn't see one trail through the green on the map, which would have been helpful, and the way the control feature was mapped was a little weird, which caused me to hesitate. Alena caught me here.

With Alena going straight to #13, and another good split. She was ahead on the road, but I passed her when she hesitated looking for the trail going back into the woods, and she was slightly ahead again by the control. Still had in her in sight at #15 (another good split), and then she was gone. No problems to #16, and a good spilt to #17, where Wyatt caught me. I expected him to vanish immmediately, but I had him in view for at least half of the next leg. Slight brain lapse there, getting tired, and I drifted right a bit and had to correct after crossing the road. I expected a time loss on this, but it was only a minute. The last control was a hard call as to whether to take trails around to the left or dive straight into the green. I opted for the former (safer), and it looks like that was a reasonable choice.

Fifth place among the old men, pretty satisfying. But the four who were ahead of me were registered in M40 or M45, leaving the gold medal in M35 to this 57 year old. I took off early (before awards) to have time to visit a lighthouse before going to the airport, but not before taking some verbal abuse from someone who disagreed with my choice of category. Too bad.
