shoes: Oboz Sawtooth II

A walk around some Townsend streets with Nancy (mostly paved, except for Bayberry Hill Rd.). We picked up about a half-dozen returnable cans and another bag of water bottles, nips, and miscellaneous trash at the end. I think Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey is the Bud Light of nips.

WBNW, In The Dark. I spoke too soon earlier when I said that the snow was gone, because I woke to snow this morning and at one point I measured 3" on my deck, with the NWS predicting another 3" (that never materialized). The radio said that Ashby got the most, with 8.5", and that's not far away, so I took a headlamp and the rock skis and off I went.

Eight inches doesn't last long in mid-April. The main trail that I had intended to ski on was a patchwork of snow and dirt, and the further down I went, the more the latter predominated. I eventually sought out smaller trails where the coverage was a bit better, and at least the bare spots were wet leaves instead of wet sand. This was "skiing" in the sense that I was outdoors moving around with ski equipment attached to me, and from time to time I was even able to move my limbs in a manner that might have looked like skiing, but I could have done this whole thing much more efficiently wearing spiked shoes. It is what it is.

Sometimes you can get snow/ice buildup stuck to the bottoms of your skis, depending on the consistency of the snow. When I got back to the car, I had ice buildup between the ski and the base in places where the base had peeled off from the ski. A couple of quick tugs and the entire base came off of both skis. The only spot that even put up any resistance was the spot that had delaminated before and I had stuck it back on with shoe goo. So it's official, these skis are going in the trash (and the same goes for those lousy boots).

Over to Shirley to pick up a few streets. Making pretty good time, especially on the way back on Rte. 2A. One moment of near excitement came when a blur of fur dashed out in front of me when I was moving fast, tooo quickly for me to react. My best guess is bunny, but it could have been a squirrel. It looked like it went through the wheel, between the spokes (preposterous!), but I didn't feel anything, so it either skootched through somehow or else made a hasty u-turn.

Note

I didn't pick up any trash today, but I did bring the beer bottles and cans back to the supermarket. The machines were quite good at reading even dented cans, but refused to accept anything from Anheuser-Busch, which is a shame considering the abundance of Bud Light containers. I assume they can get away with this because they don't carry any A-B products, although that seems unlikely. I meant to check in the beer cooler to see if they had any, but I forgot.

Newcomb Hollow to White Crest Beach, by road, after landing, to retrieve my car. I had my GPS logger in my pocket, and it looked like it was working, but there was no track recorded,so the time is a guess, might have been faster (I landed at 5:52, sent a text at 6:00, packed up my stuff, set out running, and sent another text at 6:52, a few minutes before I was done). I felt surprisingly good doing this, wondering if I was benefitting from a tailwing being channeled up the road at the beginning.

spiked:10/12c shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 280 #1 (blue)

Nobscot BYOM, Red, 6.9 km. Went with Nancy and rendezvoused with Phil and Peter (thanks for the impetus, Phil!), the three of them all did Green. Mostly okay, I had to stop twice to remove tiny thorns that had apparently survived the washing machine from my socks, which necessitated shoe removal. I had caught Phil at #1 (he had started a bit earlier), and he almost caught up on the way to #2 during the first thorn extraction. Missed a bit on #3, I came into the area okay but visibility was low, so I missed to the right and overshot the end of the stone wall, which extended higher onto the hillside than I was expecting. The big oops was on #7. I went down the stream instead of contouring, and had to stop for the second thorn. Then although I had planned on taking the obvious trail route, I instead decided to cut the corner to save some climb. That could have been okay, but after going by the unmapped new buildings near #8, I drifted left, and got flummmoxed by the fact that I wasn't coming up on the big trail. I came to a stop and spent three or four minutes trying to figure out where the heck I was, and when I did, I went to the control no problem (though maybe not by the best route). Time loss on that leg had to have been at least six minutes. And the rest went fine. Overcast and cool today, but quite nice weather for orienteering, really.
