orienteering race 1:14:19 [3] *** 9.16 km (8:07 / km) +128m 7:35 / km
spiked:17/20c shoes: Inov-8 Oroc 280 #2 (red)

Lubrecht Experimental Forest, Long Advanced, 7.4 km, 2nd. Quite a good run. About 20% of the ground had a thin cover of snow, which made for slightly chilly feet. I lost a smidgen on time (less than many others) on #3 because the control was hidden behind a tree trunk. I drifted right on #12 and got too low, realized that, and had to climb back up. I got to the center of the circle on #17 just fine, and tried going into the trench from both ends with no success (clogged with fallen tree trunks) before looking at the control description to see that it wasn't in the trench, it was on the skinny knoll next to the trench. #19 was the some control as #1, and I just blasted in there with my eyes open for the depression I had already seen, having forgotten that the first control had been on a hill. Doh!

Montana: state #41.

Soft Rock (MT), walking/jogging around part of the Advanced course from the recent meet. Quite a fine experience in all regards. A few snowflakes coming down. I went over to check out an overlook in between #11 and #12, and I was never certain whether I got to the right spot for #12, but if there had been a flag, I think I was close enough that I would have spotted it.

About an hour at Soft Rock (MT), walking/jogging around part of the Advanced course from the recent meet. Track when I get home. Quite a fine experience in all regards. A few snowflakes coming down.

Shirley, In The Dim. Picked up all (I hope) of the little streets downtown, plus a couple of things I had missed, and even the elusive and nasty Fire Road 16, so now I should be down to a few odds and ends. It didn't (quite) get dark enough for me to need the lights to see where I was going (well, maybe at the very end), but I had them on for the last 45 minutes or so for conspicuousness.

Another trip to Shirley, where I failed to complete a number of streets because either the map shows them as going further than they really do, or because I missed a turn (I guess), or because of all the big signs saying to stay away form the prison, or because they're blocked off with concrete barriers and are an ancient broken mess beyond that (and also headed for the prison).

pedaling (road bike) 1:20:58 [3] 32.74 km (2:28 / km) +318m 2:21 / km

Down to the SW part of Shirley to pick up a bunch of streets. The highlight came just as I was rolling the bike out of the garage, when I spotted a bobcat at the foot of my driveway. I didn't manage to get my phone out to take a picture before it sauntered off into the underbrush in the woods across the street.

Earl's Trails, BYOM Red, 5.7 km, 290 m. Warm day, steep place, slow woods in a few places. A dumb bit at the end on #6, went around the little marsh and attacked from the south instead of coming in from the east. Got a little confused about where I was on the trail network heading for #8 and probably lost a little time, not by feeling lost, but because of an inefficient route. Sloppy on my way to #14 and drifted too far right, spotted the hill 150 m or so E of the control and corrected from there. Otherwise fine. Nancy and I reached the last control just about simultaneously, so that was great. Then visiting with the Levitins and Phil and Adam Bricker in the parking lot afterwards, and the two of us headed for Atkins Farms for lunch and ice cream on the way home.
