Bear Brook, Red, 5.7 km, 165 m, 3rd.
Oof. Just didn't have it today. Went out last because I was working results, so I got the hottest part of the day. It probably wasn't really very hot, but it felt hotter to me. Bear Brook in June, full leaf-out, lots of deadfall and stuff, so slow going and poor visibility. There was very little running involved in this. From my perspective, most controls were misses, even ones that were pretty easy, but I guess other people must have lost time out there as well. The big time losses were #6, where I apparently drifted way into the silly out-of-bounds area (I don't remember crossing the first small trail), and #12, where I knew I needed to go further right but managed to talk myself out of it.

Across the street. The first part of the loop was exploring an extensive new trail that got added -- somebody did a lot of work! My pace started out at an easy lope and then sped up slightly to a plodding struggle. Knee felt okay, but everything else hurt.

Complicated orienteering dream this morning, involving a Red course with 70 controls, the last part of which, at least, was through sort of a semi-rural campus kind of area, and controls were in weird places, like you had to go through a garage door into a small building, and find the SI box mixed in with some papers under a TV. The Blue course runners had to go down a steep dam spillway with water flowing over it.

Mouse #28 in the furnace room and mouse #29 in the garage, if I counted right. There's also a trap in the garage that seems to be missing, and I'm guessing that a mouse got caught in a manner that allowed him to drag the trap underneath something.

The standard loop. Today was much wetter than I had been expecting based on the forecast (pouring rain all morning), but eventually the sun came out and so did I. These days you don't often see a dog out in the road by itself, but there was one on Holman, a pretty big dog. Barking occasionally, but kind of minding its own business. Then a bit further on I encountered a goat and a ram. That's more unusual.

I was the cause of a traffic snafu, but it wasn't my fault. As I was approaching the top of Gilchrest, a car turned onto it from Northfield, comiung toward me. I was on the very edge of the pavement (not in the poison ivy), and I guess the car wanted to give me an adequate berth, but there was another car coming up from behind me, and the one facing me didn't want to pull all the way to the far side of the road, so it stopped. And I guess the car behind me must have also stopped. But then a third car turned onto Gilchrest, and seeing the one in front of me not moving, it just pulled around to pass it, eliciting a horn blast from the car behind me. But a fourth car had just turned onto Gilchrest, meaning that the third car didn't even have room to back up. I just gave a shrug indicating "you people sort this out" and kept on walking.

Nashua River rail trail from Groton Center to Sand Hill Road and back. Sheesh, had it really been almost two years since I rode this thing? That would explain why I was so rusty. Tried for a while to mount, then gave up and found a sign post to get started. At the turnaround, I gave it a few more tries, and managed to get rolling, but it was really sloppy. No unscheduled dismounts, though, and I held it together through bumps in the pavement and other perturbations. On the way back I overtook a woman jogging, but it took forever. This is probably the least risky thing for my knee (well, kayaking) but it's not very much exercise.

Things had been seeming better, and then just walking around in the kitchen, my knee felt wonky again. It's so vague...

The other way this time, down to Devens. There's some huge building under construction down there (futile nuclear fusion project?). Pretty humid out, but not oppressively warm (glad to have the breeze of motion, though).

Earlier, I was in the kitchen and I pivoted on my left foot and my knee did something that definitely didn't feel right. Not really painful, and it didn't hurt afterwards, but it felt pretty weird. And when riding, I had a couple of moments of stabbing weakness in various places in my legs. I don't know a better way to describe it, just a quick "this muscle doesn't work at all", and then back to normal. Nothing I'm all that worried about.

Forced myself to get out and tackle one of the 15 essential yard work items on my list. Fourteen to go, some of which are not single-day projects.

Wet, wet day, mostly just foggy and drippy, though eventually downpours. I did enough yesterday that I didn't feel bad about staying in and crossing a few things off my to-do list.

Northwest. I planned out a 25 mile loop, but then didn't pay very much attention to my plan, because I ended up doing 40. I broke it up, though with about an hour and a quarter stop to hang out by the pool at the Lundbergs' house. Knee still feels a little funny, I'm trying to be careful to stay in a low enough gear so as not to do any more damage.

Finished up the bit of mowing that I still had left (I was going to start the watch for this, but I forgot). And I finished up a couple of other chores that I was determined to get done before the end of the day, but I still have a whole list of other yardwork to get to.
