Etape Pennines, 159th out of ~2,000
Very hard, wasn't really ready for it to be quite that tough to be honest. Not exactly a 'catered training ride' as I had thought it might be!
It was very much a course for climbers: lots of climbs linked together by some very fast descents. There were some really tough ones as well. A common pattern was a fast descent followed by sharp corner into 10-20% hill. The steepest of these was also quite slick and nearly everyone I saw had to walk.
There was a KOM stretch, a nice touch. I did 10:30 to the winner's 8:30 or so for 70th place. That matches up with how I was doing generally: pretty good on the climbs but nowhere near as powerful as most people when the terrain was more rolling. I rode with the 3rd/4th/5th place lady for a while, and I would drop her as long as the climb was steep enough or long enough, but once it was close to flat I could only hold her wheel.
One thing I really enjoyed was the longer steady climbs. Maybe it would be fun to see how I get on over some serious hills...
