shoes: ___DA_Di2

Rolled down to Lava Java for breakfast #2 and a swim.

Legs are not sore from running and back just a tad. Bike legs felt good after warm up and put in a solid IM/HIM section on the QK heading down. Felt good.

Swim 40:00 [4] 1.5 mi (26:40 / mi)

Honu 70.3

Warm up and then 29min swim split for the race. Pretty happy with that for the effort and no wetsuit. Should have started (and will again going forward) in the front. Total cluster to the first couple buoys working through packs of people then got on some good feel the 2nd half and just swam long and strong.

Well I figured my legs were going to be dead on the bike but I felt really good swimming and was going to go for it on the bike.

Didnt realize when I was riding all yesterday my front tire was at about 60psi. Its the same 28cm that caused my rear tire/wheel/rim to melt the other day. I pumped it up to ~110psi before the race and didnt realize it filled the cap completely between my front fork and brake. Tried pushing my bike through T1 and it was a no go. Ran with my bike thinking it was the brake, etc, etc, etc... Lack of focus and desire for details for "training race" was catching up. Anyways, let the air out until it didnt touch and then made it about 5mi before the sidewall ripped open. Boom! Good thing I was going uphill. Ran to the SAG and was stoked to get a new tire put on.

Just rolled and smooth sailing from there. Caught back up to Nick at about mile 15 and we rode most of the way to Hawi side by side chatting. Really enjoyed this trip and race. Didnt expect the headwind coming back! Glad I had training wheels and some pop to push through it. I also finished my Vitargo bottle before the turn around and i was soooo hungry the entire race. Furnace is on. Felt fine but legs are sore and tired but not as bad as wrists, shoulders and my screaming taint. Happy to get off the bike. Moving time was 2:31

Running 1:40:00 [3] 13.0 mi (7:42 / mi)

Figured I would feel good with rested run legs but this was going to be a longer one for my recent running. No real fatigue or fade on the run. Finished with fastest miles and plenty of recovery built in so with that and all the grass running I should be ready to hit it again soon. Only goal was to get in the effort and make sure ankle was not going to get pissed.

Ran 5mi solid then jumped into porto, stretched, ice and cooled down. Then repeated that for ~5K's at race pace but stopping between to total recover and maintain perfect form. Really stoked to finish, see the form making a huge difference and that ankle had zero issues during or after. Worth the wait.

Those shoes really suck when wet...

Trek 1:10:00 [2] 2.5 mi (28:00 / mi)

Down and out to the waterfall and then beach in Waipio Valley. Sacred place.

Running 50:00 intensity: (30:00 @3) + (15:00 @4) + (5:00 @5) 3.5 mi (14:17 / mi)

Ran across the beach, up to the first main switchback with Nick and then back on the beach and ALL OUT up the ramp to the car. Not one walking step but basically 14-18min/mi pace. ha. Felt good running barefoot on sand and although ankle was tight it didnt aggravate it after. Redline for the entire climb and really took it out out of me later on the bike.

Road Bike 4:54:00 intensity: (3:24:00 @3) + (1:30:00 @4) 84.63 mi (17.3 mph) +5689ft

Down "towards" Hilo and back. Tropical rain, winds, heat and the gnarliest humidity that I have only felt at Panama before. Nothing compared to the views. Love that side of the island. Love the heat. Love the climbing. Love the wind.

Tight on time to make check-in so was pushing hard on the way out into the headwind. Kinda rolled into bonk town by the turn around and legs just shell shocked. Loaded up on all sorts of crap food and was betting on a tailwind, no rain and some new found energy on the way back. We got it. Nick really stepped up and we had a solid effort the entire way back with only a couple short stops. I was on the ropes and have only been like that a few times before. yeeee....

We were less than .5mi back to the car and I got a piece of glass in my rear tire. ha. Probably good we had a little cool down. We were only a few minutes late to bike check in!

Island transformation. Reverse loop down to QK and up to Hawi and then UP 250 Waimea goodness and dropped into Parker Ranch to meet the team for the run and then back down the 190. An island as diverse as it is beautiful. I cleared out my phone last night and it was full by the time we got to dinner. I got a couple good shots

Stronger and feeling better each day. Highest power, no fade and no fatigue. Bike legs coming around. Love the wind, love the climbs, love the heat, love the rain, love the views....

2nd attempt at the trip to Hilo to stay the night. 2nd time getting picked up from end of ride. ha! Very solid route and we didnt even start at the QK but it was still a 40 mile climb to Mauna Kea visitor station and we could have ran the dirt road to ~13K. Cant believe there is so much on this island and the races cover the lame spots...

The new 200 is pristine roads. Actually everywhere we have been the roads are basically all new. Found the old 200 on the way back and it looks fun too but not the steady up saddle. Sweating buckets, frozen in the clouds and rain, blasted by wind, had to push the bikes a few times on the grades at 9,000ft. Could not ask for a better route.

Got new tires yesterday and my rear got a bulge in the tire. This caused the rim to actually push out and rub against my frame. Not my brakes and not from riding my brakes or riding carbon wheels like all the smart "advice" people gave me. Never had an issue with Reynolds before but melted on both sides in this spot. Did some switching and rode down the volcano in the rain with just a front brake. it worked and then when we got to the clear section and it was safe Monique picked me up. ha! Lots of good stories from this one.

And then there was the time I was just going to roll up north for an hour or two....

Long night last night and ankle was huge on Sunday and flight only made it ugly and tight. After bob adapter and changing planes, etc got in very late. Nick was up early and ditched me. Seriously!

Nice chill morning then decided to roll to Hawi but took Mamalahoa hwy to Parker Ranch. Yo!!! Honestly the 250 made me realize just how clueless we are about heaven. Glory and his grace. Yes, please.

Stopped to have some nice lady charge my phone because it was dead from all the pics I was taking then got some trunks and tank and some coffee. Should have got food or more water. Rode 250 up to Hawi - mind blowing once again - and had a long trip down the QK. Dehydrated and faded. Phone dead again and I was confused until the crew picked me up. Great day in paradise!
