Such a good day! Big Bear HC race.
had zero expectations and just super stoked when my hams and legs felt good waking up a few dozen times last night. Back muscle pop did not really change anything today. Ready to ride! Lined up w/ Chris and the crew but at the first climb by BV bikes I stood until I was in the first handful of riders. Party time!
Felt amazing all day. Not that I didn't have moments when I wanted to just pull over, drop or take a long break in the shade but just power and in control when I needed it. Staying the course mentally and nutrition and legs just kept going. Rolled with the lead pack around the lake and then right into the first Onyx climb and found myself taking long pulls with Tom Step. top three guys slightly ahead but still a huge group with us. I needed to sit back but it was really so manageable after the last few weekends of attacks and intensity through the roof. Sat in front until we hit the 500 meter sign and a few guys busted around for the first KOM.
Dropping down the back we caught all but the first two guys and Alexandre but he was in sight ahead. I had to pee SOO bad. Tim and me still pushing the pace in a smaller chase group and about ~45 riders in the pack first real pack. When we hit the bottom turn around at Angelus Oaks I thought we were stopping. I pulled over to pee and the entire group rolled right on by and started the climb. It was a long pee. uh. No water or anything before I got on my bike and got to work. Never stopped again and thank God I packed my pockets with like 5 bars and a redbull. Never got anything but water on the course from the SRAM car eventually leading us out. Anyways, most stoked moment of the race was the tough mental negotiation of deciding to bridge back up to the group. Gutted at times but after a while I saw cars then the end of the group and finally I could smell them. Burned a ton of matches and made promises that I would sit in but I got to them just as we reached Jenks lake. hurting. happy. Just then it was not two guys out front and two chase group and then our big o' group. I recovered and then went off the front with a small group of about a dozen. We pushed until Onyx summit now Tim leading and the last mile just me on his wheel with 5 guys behind us. rad!
The next section we all worked together on the downhill back into town and around the back of the lake. This was the hardest part of the race for me. Great rotation but we never stopped pedaling! Mentally tough spot and we were not getting any closer to the 2 leaders but about 2-4min from the 2 man chase pack. By the time we started climbing up before the descent to snow valley I realized I was going to make it and that I started feeling good. 100 miles and well over 10K of climbing in about 4:45. Lots of unexpected like the climb up to Green Valley Lake and realizing the dudes ahead and with me were real legit dudes. I was sitting on the front every climb without having to work too hard and ahead a few times without anyone trying to chase going to Green Lake.
Heading back I was dreading but also knew there was going to be a big effort. Anticipation! I put in an effort after snow valley and the group spread wide. Just me and about 200 yards back Tom and Jon. I knew we had too much downhill still ahead so I rolled easy and thought we could work together but it was not long before the rest of the 4 guys got back on for the downhill back to the lake. I knew I had the legs then so when we climbed back into town I got another good gap and then just kept it solo. I thought maybe I was missing something and I was....two super steep climbs - like 20 cadence out of the saddle quick climbs right when I thought we were two blocks from the finish. Tim got around me and I got lost at the second turn and Jon got around me too...until i figured it out. passed him back before the finish to get 6th overall. Honestly just shocked that a little over a month ago I could not have even imagined this. Such a rad day having the moto's and SRAM car in front of us the entire time and just feeling so dialed in. Riding bikes is fun but racing bikes is funner!!
