| A New PR by 45 seconds. I went out with only 1 goal: run a well-paced effort through 20 miles. Anything else was gravy. I had planned 5M/42:30; 10M/85:00, then speeding up *slightly*, to try to reach 20M by 2:50:00.
The first 4 5M splits were 42:14 -- 1:24:13 -- 2:07:14 -- 2:49:30, so I was right on pace. During the 1st half we had encountered stiff headwinds on the boardwalk heading North. I was counting on the tailwind coming South from the Cape Henry Lighthouse to even up my pace. At 20, I decided to try to hang on as long as possible, and made it through 22 miles before the wheels started to come off. My parents were spectating at mile 23, so that buoyed me up mentally. I took another 30s break with The Stick, told them I was on an excellent pace, close to PR, but was starting to hurt. Mile 24 was the worst mentally, because the numbers seemed to point to no chance of a PR. In the 25th mile, some really chatty woman neared me frrom behind, encouraging everyone. I was able to push the pain out of my head and ratchet up the pace. Mile 26 was my fastest all day (7:58 pace), including a finishing stretch on the exposed boardwalk, with the last 0.2 at 7:47 pace. 3:43:58 officially (a new PR by 45 seconds), with the closest to even splits of any of my 8 marathons: 1:50:55/1:53:05.

| Early wakeup for flight to Norfolk. First flight arrived early in PHL, to find not 1, not 2, but 3, count 'em, 3 flights from PHL to Norfolk. Was unable/unwilling to change to an earlier flight, so I arrived as planned in ORF a bit after noon.
Weather gorgeous, Shamrock Marathon expo was better than I expected. Bought $ome $tuff there, including a neat "26.2" belt buckle that I hope I can use with a belt whose buckle broke. Lots of vendors, though not many offering food samples. My father was surprised to see all the thin, fit people there. Marathon entrants expected to number between 2 and 3000. Now for a nap and a restful pre-race day.

| Easy run to stretch out the lower half. | ||
| Note | ||
| Fortunately, the neck pain does not impact running (for 3M, at least). We'll see this weekend if 3+ hours of running in the sun is any worse. I'll try to remember to pack some vitamin I along with my Gu. | ||

| Neck pain upon waking. Similar to some pain I had last June. No obvious cause, but it feels like whiplash. Chiropracter did massage and adjusted me, but there is still residual soreness. | ||
