Volunteered for 4+ hours at the Danskin Women's Triathlon, Webster, MA. Rains gave way just at race time to a clear day. The woman first into T2 had a 2 minute lead, but had shaky looking running legs. The 2nd woman into T2 exited onto the run with fire in her eyes and a good stride, causing me to mention to the guy next to me, she can catch the leader. Sure enough, she was the eventual winner by about a minute. Over 3000 women competed today, a figure that's up 50% from a couple of years back. I don't know how much larger they can grow the figure without incurring serious overcrowding on the 12M bike loop. At 3000, the transition area looked like a small city.

Just the opposite of the triathlon weather-wise. A clear day dissolved into threatening rain, then drizzle, then downpour, then lightning. I was soaked within the first 100m, recalling a conversation with my parents about whether I know enough to come in from a lightning storm.

So my planned long, slow distance turned out to be neither long nor slow, as I was hurrying to minimize the time spent outdoors in a lightning storm. Grrr. This was perhaps the worst weather I have run in since before my hiatus from marathons began, 2001. I think I did some long runs in nasty weather, and one memorable 20M race in a downpour, but not recently.

Simpson loop from work (hilly), am. Felt OK to start, but my legs did not have that snap, and I felt as if I were trudging. Walked a couple of times. Seeing another runner wearing a Danskin tank charged me up. I asked her if she were running the Danskin Tri this weekend; she said not this year. I'll be in the finish chute with Brenna again this year, clipping ChampionChips. It was either the positive social interaction, or maybe it was the steep downhill section.

The stream feeding the Assabet was at "2.9" units, and looked pretty flooded. Next week I'm going to be pulling the exotic invasive weed "water chestnut" (not the edible kind that shares the name but is botanically completely different) from the Assabet.

ARRT loop from work. Got in the run before the rains began. HRM once again reporteed bogus max HR.

Weather mild but muggy.

Mountain biking 47:50 [2] 6.0 mi (7:57 / mi) +180m 4:32 / km

Around Green Hill Park. About 20 min on trails. Last part was a bit hurried back to the car to pick up Brenna from her music lesson; not sure my route choice was the best. I chose the road route on Rt 9, and managed to drop my chain on a steep section near Bell Hill, falling ever-so-slowly to the curb on my right (at least not into traffic). More embarrassed than injured.

I realized that it has been a long time since I've run the East Side Trail in this park. I guess I stopped running it when the construction got going on the relocated Worcester Voke School, which caused some of the trails to be relocated. There was an entirely new apartment complex on one section of the East Side Trail, blocking access to the old Coal Mine. (Yes, Virginia, there was once an active but not terribly productive coal mine in the city of Worcester.) The end near the coal mine where I used to run had become overgrown from disuse and a bit of dumping.
