Paddling 15:00 [1]

Very gentle paddle near Neals Cove (where my tent was). I have not been in a boat since my accident, and I've forgotten a lot of the body position required. Getting into the water, I was trying to push off without stepping into the water with one foot. Instead, I capsized the boat and went in up to my waist while still half on land. =:-O

Then, a very gentle paddle to see if the paddling motion exacerbated any arm or shoulder musculature. If it did not, I could offer to pick up some Canoe-O controls.

Orienteering 1:39:00 [2] ***** 5.87 km (16:52 / km)
shoes: Falcon

Green course. I considered (briefly) dropping to Brown, which was printed at the delightful scale of 1:7500 instead of 1:10 000. However, it was only 2.9k, and I wanted to have a go at redeeming myself. So I chose Green, 4.4km/100m. We were on the Big Island; I mostly walked, with occasional jogs when there was a good collecting feature.

No problems reaching 1, 2, 3, 4. Then I overshot 5 to the NW and relocated about 200m from the circle. Then no problems finding 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and the finish. There was a delightful leg from 6 to 7 just S of Burnham Marsh, on a steep sidehill. Glorious open woods, some occasional mossy boulders, and the navigation was made easier by ticking off major islands about 150m prior to the control.

Paddling 33:00 [1] 2.57 km (12:50 / km)

Collecting a few Canoe-O controls. Managed not to capsize the boat. Although I did make a parallel error on the shortest leg between controls, between 3 (island) and 2 (cove connecting to the main body of land).

I have forgotten much about the fine maneuvering of the boat.

Orienteering race 2:56:00 [2] ***** 7.0 mi (25:09 / mi)
shoes: Salomon trail shoes

Pawtuckaway Green course, nominally 4.1k/140m climb. Winning time was 41 minutes(!).

Not a good day in the woods for the home team. Although I (thought I) fully recharged my Garmin Thursday night before leaving for work on Friday, when I powered on, it said Low Battery and turned off. Dang. That, coupled with flailing around trying to find the 1st control, made me come back, change watches to just a time-of-day (not even multi-split capable :() watch, and get a new start time.

2nd start. Still failed once more to find #1 on the first try, but eventually found it. OK to 2 and 3, then went walkabout going to 4. I first found 5, then thought, oh, this should not be too difficult to do 5-4-5, but I somehow managed to reach 4 then go on a scenic tour of central Pawtuckaway swampland before regaining contact and finding 5.

Then, to 6, which was maybe 125-150m from a trail. I still managed to botch this control, making several attempts, and getting quite flummoxed in the process. At one point, I found a control (not on my course) and was ready to dnf, when a Red runner came up and I asked him to show me where I was on the map. His control was about 25m from the trail, and I once again botched finding 6. So I bagged it, bailing to the east to pick up the trail somewhere. While walking back to the finish, I decided to try to find 8 to the end, which I managed OK.

Bleah.

Note

With copious thanks to jima, who lent me a Garmin charge cable, I recharged my Garmin for Sunday, and verified that it behaved well while walking from the pavilion to and from my campsite.
