Orienteering race 3:43:06 [2] **** 11.44 mi (19:30 / mi) +510m 17:08 / mi
ahr:146 max:160 shoes: Falcon

Blue Hills Traverse. Such long legs. A bit cool, but delightful woods. I particularly find the area near control 10 gorgeous. I wasn't in good enough shape to take advantage of the runner's course that was set, with the long legs. Alone from 2 to 3 along the fence to the south, until I reached the circle and found some others wandering around slowly. Went over the top to #4, even though at one point the plan was to stay below the cliffs. To 5 well behind Jim A (whom I saw going from 6 to 7) and ahead of Dean, whom I saw coming around from the W side of 4 after I had departed. I caught back up to Phil just after #7. Tried to stick with Steve Tarry on the long leg to 9, but Phil and I went S on a trail about 500m east of 9 whereas Steve had continued W. I think we were very close at the control. Then, leaving 9, I went solo directly N. Got a little confused going along the top of the cliff line, couldn't see where the cliff line petered out, and had to drop down to the trail to relocate for certain. Solo again 12 to 13, where I elected to take the trails to the stream and come in from surer attack points. Punched just before Phil who had taken the more skillful route. I didn't like any of the route choices from 13 to 14, but went E to the trail, then S, caught up to Phil again, and we punched 14 close together.
