| slept:9.0 weight:146lbs | ||
| Welp, post-Senegal weight is about what I expected. At least I seem to have quickly adapted to the time. I've got a lot of running ahead of me. | ||
| Running (road) 30:30 [2] 3.0 mi (10:09 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Kayano XI - grey | ||
| Thought I'd naturally get up very early and thus be able to head out for an early morning trail run. But instead I slept late and stayed on base, running before it got too hot. Turns out it was a good thing I didn't drive anywhere, because running felt about as good as the way dog poopie smells. Kept it short. I guess that's to be expected given the trip yesterday. Good to be back (though a little sad to leave). | ||

| Running (road/dirt) 53:00 [2] 5.3 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| slept:7.0 shoes: Kayano XI - grey | ||
| Slept well for the first time in a week! Just in time for my last day in Dakar. Eek! Where did the time go? Took my camera with me (finally) for a leisurely jaunt along the corniche. Saw a white dude running ahead of me and thought, "wonder if I know that person..." and sure enough it was Steve! Ha. | ||
Wednesday Apr 26 | ||
| Running (road/dirt) 32:00 [2] 3.2 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| slept:5.0 shoes: Kayano XI - grey | ||
| Haven't been able to sleep well for days. Figured I'd give up trying and went for a run this morning anyway. It wasnt very pleasant, sleep definitely makes a big difference. I may need to rework my priorities for when I get back. Right now it's 1) pizza 2) a hot shower 3) sleep 4) a hot shower. | ||
Sunday Apr 23 | ||
| Running (road/dirt) 25:00 [2] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Kayano XI - grey | ||
| Weekend wasn't at all what I thought it would be like, but not in a bad way, except for not being able to get in any good runs... In Cap Skirring, had a chance for a quick morning trot on the road towards Guinea-Bissau. Didn't get there. | ||

| Running warm up/down (road/dirt) 38:00 [2] 3.9 mi (9:44 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Kayano XI - grey | ||
| Early evening run, back in Dakar. Lots more people out at this time, it's actually pretty crowded on the corniche. Can't really say that about SAT.
Easy out and back plus recoveries.
| Running intervals (road/dirt) 16:00 [4] 2.09 mi (7:38 / mi) | ||

| (rest day) | ||
| Calves sore from yesterday! yay! I feel like I actually had a hard workout. | ||
Sunday Apr 16 | ||
| Running (beach) 1:05:00 [3] 6.5 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| shoes: barefoot | ||
| Awesome early morning run, again at Toubab Dialao. Almost no one out early in the morning except for some early rising fisherman and a few hardcore soccer players doing calesthenics on in the sand. Ran north along the beach until I was blocked by rocks, then returned. | ||
| Strength/Core (stretching) 10:00 [1] | ||
Saturday Apr 15 | ||
| Running (beach) 41:00 [3] 4.1 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| shoes: barefoot | ||
| Wonderful evening run on the beach at Toubab Dialao. It was so very nice to breath fresh air and be out of Dakar. And I think my feet really liked it.
There were several serious soccer games going on on the beach and I tried my best to run around them (getting refreshingly wet in the process) but I fear that I may have disturbed one or two nonetheless. It seems the locals there are less interested in visas, because I made no new friends, though I did get a call of "tu es belle" from a boy who could not have been older than 13. In training for Dakar, I suppose...

| Well, that was quick. Cipro rocks my world. | ||
| Running (road) 15:00 [2] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Kayano XI - grey | ||
| Ran to the Olympique for class. Made a "friend" along the way (again), and have decided that I need to make up a persona for these guys. Fake name, fake occupation, fake husband, the works. I could have fun with this... | ||
| Other Cardio 55:00 [1] | ||
| shoes: Kayano XI - grey | ||
| Met Therese for a different class tonight. I didn't really like it that much, it wasn't as challenging as the other one, and I'm not really coordinated enough to enjoy it. | ||
Wednesday Apr 12 | ||
| Note | ||
| (sick) | ||
| Egads, I don't remember the last time felt so miserable. Tossing and turning with fever and f'd up dreams the whole night. No running this morning, obviously. Off to the doctor. | ||
Tuesday Apr 11 | ||
| Running (road/dirt) 1:00:00 [2] 6.0 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Kayano XI - grey | ||
| Ran a little further south today on the corniche. Felt pretty good, and today is a holiday so there weren't too many cars on the road, which means less fumes. Unfortunately, the fumes usually mask the sewage smell, so I think it's maybe better with more cars. The mosques were blaring prayers all night, but I'm far enough between them that it wasn't a problem - it was actually the animals that kept me up last night.
Made a new "friend" today while running. Michel, a cook at a local snazzy restaurant, also a boxer, with moderate English speaking abiltiies. He chased me as I ran by because, apparently, he liked me and wanted to talk more. Man, if I were looking for a husband this would definitely be the way to go about finding one. Hate to tell them all that they aren't coming with me when I leave.
Monday Apr 10 | ||
| Running (road/dirt) 31:00 [2] 3.1 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| max:183 shoes: Kayano XI - grey | ||
| i was really dragging today, and the little things that connect my quad to my knee (tendons?) are bothering me from yesterday. i heard some guys on th side of th road yelling at me in wolof. I couldn't understand it but i'm positive that they were saying 'run toubab, run!' | ||
Sunday Apr 9 | ||
| Other Cardio 50:00 [3] | ||
| shoes: Kayano XI - grey | ||
| Went to the Olympique gym on the corniche with Therese. Pretty impressive workout. The instructor was a machine. And apparently she has a male equivalent that does classes during the week. And sometimes they teach together! Ultimate eye candy, I suppose. The class was a solid cardio workout similar to a plyo workout, with some pushup and ab work, too. I was sweating buckets. I can't imagine what the muslim girl covered from head to toe was feeling like...
Note for the future: suggest not wearing shorts if walking to and from the gym. It's awkward and draws attention (that is, more than I already get for being white). I'm either going to run there or wear pants/skirt and change when I get there.
| Note | ||
| As requested, photos from my first week in Senegal. Index page screwy. Some comments under some photos. I haven't taken nearly as many as I wish I could. Taking pictures requires being discrete, as many people do not want their photo taken. So I'm trying, but these really don't show what I'd like to be showing!
To make this related to training, I will add this reminder to myself to take pictures the next time I run.

| Note | ||
| Well, i guess i couldnt avoid it. Came down with some kind of bug. THat's what I get for drinking the water. at least it's not malaria (i think). Will resume running as fever and digestive system allow. | ||

Wednesday Apr 5 | ||
| Running (road/dirt/trash) 45:00 [2] 4.5 mi (10:00 / mi) | ||
| slept:6.0 shoes: Kayano XI - grey | ||
| Had to run earlier this morning because we started class at 9. Didn't get out the door until 730 or so, so a shorter run than I wanted. Just about adjusted to the time. Basically the same run as yesterday, only I went north on the corniche (into the wind) to start. The road keeps going for a bit in that direction, but not the nice sidewalk thing, so I turned back after only a few minutes.
Mostly an easy run except for the few minutes when I ran with this guy who passed me and told me to keep up with him. We talked for a little bit but I don't really know what we were saying. He thought I was French. Do I look French? I guess that wouldn't be a bad thing, I wouldn't mind being confused for a civilized European rather than an uncouth American. Started actual French classes today. There are three of us here together, but they split us up into two classes, with me in the remedial solo one because I suck that much. It's cool though, I get one-on-one instruction to help catch up. It's coming back.

| First chance to run au Senegal. Ran from the house down to la route de la corniche ouest, which is *the* place to run in Dakar. the road runs along the ocean and is one of the only places where th view on both sides of you is not trash. i'm still not on a good sleep schedule, so it was a little warm by the time i got out the door at about 8, but soon i think i'll be able to get out really eaerly and it should be really nice out. it really isn't that hot here yt, probably most days in the 80's, but of course thee sun is quite strong.
one of th other amreicans at th cnter told me about these gym classs she gooes to, run by beautiful senegalese men with constat music. the first thing that poppd into my head was that perhaps this was the west african answer to gympa, though i have no idea what either is actually like, so it's har to say. hopefuly i'll join her for a session some time this weeek. today is independence day...
