Yeah, real rough workout day. I've been trying to do too much lately and it's catching up to me. Really, it would be nice not to have a job at all so I could do all of the other, more important things.

Didn't really feel like running all day, my legs felt abused. But I got outside and I had happy legs. Happy tunes helped - The Nields, AC/DC, Melissa Etheridge, Preston Reed, The Nields, The Beatles... and of course, The Nields. Definitely need a good pre-selected playlist for nights like this. Works well.

East flightline, 9pm, about 80F but not very humid at all. It was quite pleasant.

Came back to find an email from sis - my parents are on vacation, she's taking care of the kitties, and she locked her house key in the house. This is not unusual behavior for the tarb. Glad I got the email after my run, because I received it in a good mood.

Classic red. I knew that this was going to be a beastly course. I didn't get a chance to do more than a quick jog before the start because the boys were slow getting going. That turned out fine because it was best to save all my energy for the hills.

Started off well, focused and quick but not too fast. I took a few silly route choices on 3, 4, and the beginning of 5, but not too serious. Then came the whopper. Leg 5 was a long one, but I picked out what I think is the optimal route and executed it just fine right up to the attackpoint. It then took me another, oh, 15 minutes to find the control, because I didn't think I was where I was. In fact, the entire second half of the leg I was convinced that I had crossed the wrong saddle, left of the correct one (I hadn't) and was trying to figure out how to salvage the leg. So, trying to "correct" my mistake, I ended up going even farther to the right of the line than I already was. Then I had absolutely no idea where I was. By the time I figured it out I was halfway to 6. Turned back and had no problem finding it, of course. Actual time lost pretty high, because the second half of the leg should have been a fast downhill cruise, but I was stopping and looking at the map and moving very slowly, very confused. Again, I think I need to look a little more big picture. I was thinking of the attackpoint area as being a big flat field, rather than a somewhat open, very broad reentrant. No reason for that to confuse me so much.

The rest of the course was uneventful, it was just a long slog. I was completely exhausted at the end, more than I've ever been on an O course (even ones twice as long). Certainly due to the hills, but maybe the altitude helps?

This was a really neat course, but the hills killed me. Would have been great on CF! Basically all of the legs were interesting and had some kind of challenge. And they were all physical. Even with the ginormous mistake I ended up first in F21, which is sort of sad.

Red middle distance. I wasn't feeling quite as perky this morning, but I think that has something to do with the fact that I've been running so much at night. I need to get my legs used to moving in the morning again.

I had everything ready to go plenty early, got Joe, Ben and Paul set at registration and off on the orange, and had time to warm up, stretch, relax, focus, etc. Started slowly and carefuly reading the map, just as planned. I dropped too low while crossing the reentrant just before the first control and it cost me ~2 min to figure out what happened and get back. A little frustrating to make a mistake right off the bat, especially on a not particularly tricky leg. Put it behind me and pressed.

I was sort of cautious on the next leg, which is good because the map around the control was sketch, vegetation-wise. Another ~2 min loss on the third as I really failed to read the larger area of the map (as in, I was focused on the characteristics of the control circle, and not the 200m before getting there, so I was 150m off and couldn't figure out why the control wasn't there). The next few controls were quick and fast, and I felt like I was focusing really well. Think I even won the split to 4 (beating all the guys!).

Had a little trouble on the last few on the bland hillside (exactly what I was afraid of about this map) but nothing too crazy. Mostly I failed to notice the "8m" qualifier next to the "rootstock/stump" clue, so I was looking for a rootstock and kept seeing this tree with a control next to it, thinking it couldn't be mine. It was mine, it was just that an 8m stump looks a lot like a tree. Definitely time lost there. Finished strong and, much to my surprise, first in F21.

I came in and was sort of focused on those 2 min errors and thought of the run as really mediocre. But actually, it was pretty good - focused well, didn't run faster than I needed to, almost always reading all the important features on the map. Still need to work on looking at a bit of the bigger picture. Some of those later controls would have been easier had I paid attention to the road at the bottom of the hill. >Six minutes of error over a 45 minute course is probably on the positive side of the median amount of error, though it felt like a lot.

Fun course! Good running, great views and mildly interesting legs. And, of course, quite flat by BAOC standards. And all three of the boys enjoyed themselves and finished their courses! A successful day.

Travel day to SFO! Very stressful afternoon at work as I discovered (and then tried to resolve) a major problem - some paperwork got mixed up and now the AF is trying to send me to Valdosta, GA for my next assignment rather than Tucson, AZ. Big difference. And no thank you. Just thinking about moving back to AZ motivates me to train. Valdosta? Good god. And all because someone got confused.

Anyhoo, for directly O-related content, my (now EDITED) goals for the weekend:

Taking a cue from TJOC, I'll treat these events as Lans-O exercises. My goal is to run slowly enough that I can keep moving and work on simplifying the map to basic features. That should really be the goal every time I orienteer, so I don't think that's a very good goal. Except I really mean it when I want to cut out hesitation time. I tend to either move fast or stop/walk really slowly. So the idea this weekend is to work on moving a lot more slowly, but to keep moving.

I feel like I'm having trouble outlining any clear goals or things to work on. That seems kind of vague above. Any ideas?

From the start list it doesn't seem like there are many people that I usually see at A-meets, so none of the regulars against which I can compare. That makes it a good event not to worry about speed. Spooner Lake was the site of my first A meet, in 2003, when I failed to break *20* min/km. Let's see how much I've improved...

I was smart today - snacked for lunch, then ate a quick lunner/dinch after work and *before* flying, so that I was ready to run when I got back home. Still not enough hours in the day, but at least I got the run in. Need to pack for Tahoe! Ack! And yay!

Did ~15 min warmup, then 2x1 mile w/ 1 min easy, then back easy. Not too bad out tonight, about 82 and not as humid, though fairly windy.

First mile, into the wind, in 7:40, and it felt fairly easy. 188 avg, 196 max. Followed by 1 min easy jogging. Second mile, wind at my back, in 7:30. Felt a lot harder, but not dying at the end. 195 avg, 200 max.

Well, I can't keep up days like this one if I want to have time to do lots of training. Long day at work, then up to KBAZ for a flying lesson, then had to buy groceries so that I could eat dinner, and then it was past my bed time!

I did squeeze in some time before sleep to study the Spooner Lake map from 2003 in preparation for this weekend. It scares me, probably because my memories of it are not good (first A meet, pretty disastrous). I probably need to think about positive results to keep from being nervous. Mostly, the problem is that I look at the two long legs on the map and *still* wonder how to execute the legs. If I'm looking at them now and panicking, I can't believe that I even found those controls the first time. Ah well, I have to remember that things usually are much more clear for me once I actually get on the map and *have* to navigate.

I didn't think I'd feel up for a run today after yesterday + not good sleep, so I'd planned on swimming. But as I was getting ready to go swimming I really didn't feel like swimming. I felt like running. I figure that if I feel like running instead of swimming, I should definitely run. So I did. And it was good.

Still pretty gross at 9:30pm, "heat index" about 90F, but actual temp only 85. Nonetheless, pleasant compared to walking around in the midday sun in a flight suit.

Weight reading this morning obviously temporary. Doing well getting hydrated during the day, but late night runs make it tough to have juicy cells in the morning.

It was tough to get up this morning, but it was easy enough to get out and run once I had hopped out of bed and woken up a a bit. I thought I was well hydrated, but the scale disagreed with me. Guess I sweat more than I thought when I swim.

Took it easyish around the water tower. About 75 and very humid. Erugh.

Just got an email with Capital of Texas Tri photos. Seems they took a boatload of pictures of everyone, even us slowpokes. Or maybe it's just easier to take pictures of the slow people. ;-) Like most pictures of me during a race, most of them are unflattering. But they are also useful - it'll be no surprise that I was slow on the bike when you see how tense and uncomfortable I look! Anyhoo, pictures are here.

Went to Comanche Lookout Park to get some quick morning elevation. Ran a loop around the base (which isn't flat), then up to the top, down the gentle switchback to go up two more times, then another loop at the bottom.

Also, feel fine now, even getting some energy back. The non-scientific consensus is that I had some kind of infection, likely right leg, though I never found anything specific that would have caused it. Some kind of TX shrubbery, no doubt.

Felt fine all day, albeit a little more tired than usual for a monday. So I did something! Yay! Went to McAlister for a short ride (red loop, ~6 miles) and a run after work. Fun, though hot. And not only am I out of biking shape, but I have lost any mountain biking nerve that I used to have. I am now really an off-road pussy (excuse the french, I have to use what I've learned...).

This place is not technical by any means, but I can't even make moderately sharp turns on smooth single track without either slamming on the brakes before the turn or at least giving the handlebars a death grip. My hands hurt!

Took a short break and then ran around the northern section, which is bigger than I thought. Didn't realize I could run in that tiny bit for that "long" without retracing my steps anywhere. Neat.

While I was putting my bike back on my car this guy pulled up next to me and started asking about my bike rack and yadda yadda, being really nice. Then it came up that I was about to run and his tone changed and he said, "You're not one of those people makin' all those holes, are you?" To which I was basically like: "?" Turns out the mtn bikers at mac are still peeved that the prickly pear 50k/10 miler was held in that rainstorm, because all those people wreaked havoc with the trails. Whatever. There are more tire ruts than foot holes. That race was too much fun for me to admit that they shouldn't have held it. :-)

Travel day - Sudbury to PVD to SAT. Yikes. On my way to Providence I missed the 95/93/1/128/wtf split, which means that I drove right by the Houghton Pond exit, where NEOC just happens to be holding a meet and general meeting today. It was obviously an effort by my subconcious (or the O gods, like Odin) to get me to orienteer. Unfortunately, I would have been about 2 hours early for registration, and would certainly have missed my flight. Sooon....

So far so good on the mysterious illness today.

update: I spoke too soon. Symptoms back by early evening. This blows. I know rest is good, but I don't get any faster sitting on my ass with a fever. Today was the mildest so far, so hopefully it's about done.

On the positive side, my parents are here, my mom wants to hit the 1000 Day with me (as much as I can make), and I'm actually going to make it to this weekend's wedding (but a very, very quick trip, so no O for me while in MA).

Running (trail) 58:00 [2] 5.8 mi (10:00 / mi)

Got out to McAlister for a morning trail run. The big wigs at the Pentagon recently decided that the AF needs to stop being a bunch of wussy nerds who get beat up for their lunch money, so we get to take 1.5 hours out of the duty day, 3-5 times per week, for physical training. So this morning I took PT time, which means I could show up at work at 9 instead of 7:30, and that gave me enough time for a good run.

Low 70s, humid, cloudy. Knew it would be a good animal day when I saw a half dozen deer, 2 bunnies, and an armadillo (live!) before I even got to the parking lot. After 10 min warmup, did 1 minute quicker at the beginning of every 5 to change things up a bit.

Yup.

So it's a good thing I'd decided not to do anything today, because I am really dragging and totally exhausted. I'm not sure that I got any solid sleep last night. Could be the 5 hour nap, but I suspect that my very vivid and horrifying dream is the real cause. Maybe they're connected? It was so realistic that every time I woke up (which was often), I had serioius thoughts go through my mind about whether I could plea bargain to reduce the sentence on my double murder if I were caught, or whether it was better just to lie low, since no one suspected me. Yet. I still remember all the details, which is strange, and I can't believe that my brain came up with it. It's worthy of serious hollywood consideration.

Note
Very quick TJOC recap:

An awesome week. If every state had a JOC like this I think there'd be a lot more good, young orienteers out there. Not that one week can make a great orienteer, but the enthusiasm and the training ideas and the competitive experiences all build on each other. Just like AP is motivating for some of us to get out and train, the year-to-year (and event-to-event) rivalries that they build, and the medals they earn, and the attention from older mentors, all offers motivation to the kids. And that's important - I don't think too many teens are motivated internally.

There are a lot of kids in TX who seem to really dig orienteering (and some who aren't and came anyway). I know I'm guilty of doing it myself, but I think TX gets more of a bad rap in the O world than it deserves. I mean, the terrain is still not my favorite, but they do some solid O training in those JROTC units (though apparently they could do some more running...) and several of those kids (a pretty high number, I think, if you compare to other summer sports camps for teens) plan to keep with the sport after high school.

And, of course, it was fun. Hopefully I can go back and be more involved in the future.

Talked to the JROTC commander from Somerset yesterday and he mentioned the newish Medina River Park, located near his school, that he wanted to use for O training. So I headed down there today and ran all the trails. It could be interesting if they let the kids off the trails. They might need to invent some new shades of green for the map, though.

Legs feel good, probably do something different later today, and take tomorrow off or close to.

Last day at TJOC. The kids who hadn't passed or attempted the 5km run had to get up early today do give it a try. I paced Gabby to an attemped 32 min run. She did great on the first half, but on the way back her foot got numb (like it had fallen asleep) and she kept having to stop to shake it out. I have no idea what that is or what would cause it. I had her loosen her shoe laces and wiggle her foot around, but that didn't seem to help.

Orienteering 1:14:50 [3] *** 6.2 km (12:04 / km)

Final competition, Red, at LBJ. Tom set the courses.
Pretty solid run, goofed on 7 when I hopped on the wrong trail - tipped off when the fence got eerily close to my trail. And then lost a few minutes on 10 hacking through the dark green instead of taking the easy route around. Stupid stupid stupid.

Started basically first (passed MLG on the way to 1) and was all alone for the first half of the course, which was really nice. Saw some clumps of orange and green runners, though. 30 second start intervals seem to make that easy, but the kids seem to clump a lot naturally.

Ended up behind Lans for 2 of the last few controls and was amazed (yet again) and how smoothly people like him can orienteer, and how fast the orienteering is even when the running isn't. He ran the course in about 59 and I'm sure that I was physically moving faster between every control, when I was moving. He just never stopped and never goofed. Meanwhile, I do things like spend 15 seconds standing on the wrong side of a tree in the right reentrant and don't notice the bag. It adds up.

I enjoyed the course, pretty fast, and though it was impossible to avoid getting scratched, it didn't seem too bad. Ashley had me by about 4 minutes, and Tatyana was behind me by a couple. Robbie at ~55.

Motala:
This was a lot of fun, even with dead legs. Ran 3 rounds of the mini-courses, set on a 1:3000 map with 5 controls each (one was a spectator control in the middle). Some kind of complicated head-to-head elimination format was used. I never really understood it. One bag misplaced fairly significantly (given the scale of the courses), which kind of messed things up.

This could be a ton of fun with a more visible spectator control(s) and a good announcer and a visible scoreboard...

Prologue:
This was fun, but a little silly. They started an intermediate, advanced, and elite runner every 30 seconds - all on the same course. With only one punch at each bag, that meant potentially a 15 or 20 second wait to punch if you arrived in a pack, which of course happened. I boomed number 3 big time, did all right for the rest. Joel caught up to me around control 5 and we ran more or less the same for the rest of the course, which means he smoked me - just over 16 minutes! I wish I could say that it was my fine instruction, but really I think he just has a lot of natural talent - I didn't really feel like I had wisdom to impart.

After the course I showed Tatyana a section of the map that seemed to be missing a contour line or two. What had been a steep hill on the course looked like a gentle slope on the map. She said, "oh yes, oh yes, look at this: index contour, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, index. I think I lost some lines here, when I clicked with the mouse." Which confirms the Tatyana mouse-clicking suspicions. Very amusing, but you probably had to be there.

Chase:
I had a very good run except for the whole mispunch thing. Which I guess means that it was a crappy run. My first mispunch ever (I think), so at least I did it at TJOC, where the kids get to beat me (not like they don't anyway...) and not at an A meet or something. I was already pretty obsessive about checking control codes, so now I guess I'll be even more so. I was ahead of a group of boys and saw this conspicuously placed control ahead on a volleyball court. Looked about right on the map, but I didn't remember a control description like that, so I checked and it said, "ruin, east side". Well, that sure as heck wasn't a ruin, and it was sort of oddly hung very high, so I figured that wasn't it and kept going. At that point the boys had run ahead to this weird building that really didn't seem to be in the right place, but they all punched and I guess I didn't check the number before running off again, though I could have sworn that I had. Be interesting to check if the numbers were similar or something.

Of course, the volleyball court was the correct location and I didn't realize it until after I finished. D'oh. I guess I should rely more on the map than the control descriptions (written by a student who made lots of verbal corrections before the start). Still, a good hard run for me, and the kids seems to like it, but some of that may be because there were so many people to follow... ;-)

I wasn't aware of the high drama of the TJOC relay, so I joined the first team that asked, without giving any thought to winning. And I'm glad I did, because my teammates were a cool pair of kids, especially Jesse, who ran his heart out on the yellow leg before sending me up the amphitheater steps for the hardest "brown" course I'll ever run.

The first leg involved sliding, falling, or rolling down a steep 40m hillside, hopefully landing near a cliff to punch the bag, and then crawling back up. I'd like to see my grandmother do that. Or even my mother. (Don't tell her that I leaked that she's old enough for brown!) The rest of the course was fine, except for a slightly misplaced bag a few controls later. Hey, they're learning.

All said, Meghan and Jesse set up team Beauties and the Beast (yes, that name again) to nab a 4th place medal in the 4-pt category. w00t.
Strength/Core (stretching) 10:00 [1]
Another evening stretch before bed. And yes, earplugs again.
