| Saguaro East this morning... didn't manage to get there until just before 8. Parked at the Douglas Spring trailhead and ran to the Garwood dam and back. It was in the upper 80s but the sun was already beating down and there wasn't even the slightest breeze. I'm not used to this yet, so I wasn't very zippy. Serves me right for sleeping in.
Saw one ginormous jackrabbit. He was watching me run. I think he was thinking that if it weren't so hot maybe I'd have a chance against him. Or maybe he was just chuckling to himself about the fact that I accumulating was sweat despite the dry air.

| Hiking 1:30:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Asics Trail Attack III | ||
| Went for a hike with Seabass after work. We zipped up to Sabino Canyon to hit the Esperanza trail. Gets steeper quicker than Bear Canyon, though I don't think we went far enough for the really steep stuff to start. Throughout the hike we couldn't help but both talk about how awesome it was that we could just "zip up" to a place like this after work. So phenomenally gorgeous. On the way down there were some postcard perfect views of an almost full moon behind a ridge with giant saguaros. Too bad I didn't have my camera. :-(
Most of the hike we were shaded from the sun by ridges or plants. Amazingly, 102 is actually very pleasant like that, especially with a bit of a breeze. Carried ~10 pounds. Probably a good estimate for next weekend. Busy day at work. While I was gone the squadron went through a mini-reorganization and now I actually have a job, plus some non-trivial additional duties. It's nice to actually have work to do besides flying, believe it or not. I think that's supposed to make me weird.

| Morning run, the usual. Legs feeling progressively better, though still not up to something like intervals. I wonder if living in Tucson might lend itself to having a schedule of hard workouts over the winter, with little traveling, and then mntx miles and travel over the summer. Hmm.
This box seems bigger than usual. Did the size of this box change? Anyone? It was almost 80 at 6am. Which means it will likely be almost 110 this afternoon. Yessssss.

| Made it out for a quick run before work, about 5:15. Better. Was up earlier (couldn't help it, kitties were eating my feet) and even opened the door to make sure it was really nice out, but took me a while to convince myself I actually had time for a run. Of course, had I just run right away there wouldn't have been a question. ;-) | ||
| Note | ||
| I'm not sure what happened to me this afternoon. I got home from work (interesting day - my first emergency ground egress!) and sat on my bed to take my boots off. An hour later I woke up, still in my flight suit, sideways on the bed, legs off the side by my boots. I guess I was tired.
I actually kept sleeping after that, which would explain why I felt poopy all evening. Still time for some exercise, but basically this further proves that that naps = evil. Not evil are Vadim's pics from the Jukola trip!

| Ugh. Hardest 4 miles ever? My legs were like lead and I seriously considered turning around after five minutes. I didn't because I figured it would get better as I ran, and heck, it was in the 70s, how could I pass that up? Unfortunately, my legs never sprang to life and this felt very very long.
Planned on going out nice and early but didn't make it out the door until ~6:40. It's still nice out, but I know it's about 1000x awesomer two hours earlier. (Yes, Sandra, that's 4:40, which is definitely before breakfast.)

| Flew back to Tucson today, marking the true end of my most recent O-palooza. Which means it's time to prepare for the next event - Finger Lakes with Sandy, who I'm sure is going to be a total slavedriver.
I got home at about 3 and it was kind of hot out - about 103. I would probably have been content to sit at home and take care of homey things but instead I thought to myself, "It's 117 degrees in Baghdad, stop being such a weanie." And that did it. It was pretty hot. And it takes a lot for me to say it was hot. headed over to the Rincons and hiked up to Bridal Wreath Falls via Douglas Springs (just under 1 hr) then up a bit farther to make 75 min. Turned around and came straight back, running (slowly) when it wasn't too steep. Very nice, though the way down was much more pleasant as the sun started to go down. Only saw one person on the way up, a dude coming down wearing shorts, a t-shirt and flip-flops. I bet his feet were burned. Saw some bunnies (live), some chipmunky things, and approximately 78 lizards, give or take a few dozen. I'm sure there was more to see, and I would have liked to hike longer, but I had to pick up Seabass at work. Not much in the way of HTFU training this way. In other news, I've come back to a DDP-free household (good) with a microwave (boo hiss). And some really cute kitties!

| Barb's Nahant street scramble. Fun! I had to go a minute overtime to do it, but I got them all. I figured that since I was there I might as well see the whole island. I think the dastardly duo of Viktoria and Brendan got me by 4 minutes, but they had two brains and four eyes. Um, I mean, four real eyes, not like my four eyes.
My mom also went out and got a few and I think she felt a little neglected since I wanted to go on my own. I can't help it that I like to run. She actually did run for a bit when I passed her and wasn't doing a bad job keeping up, but that didn't last long. This was great, a perfect way to start off a party. Thanks Barb!

| There were a couple of dance pads set up last night and I got to shake off a bit of rust. Didn't play continuously, and none of it was too intense, so this just gets a little more than a mention.
It was a lot of fun to see people like my mom and Judy trying to play. Viktoria is a natural.

| Course at Nåsten with Boris in the afternoon. He led for a few controls, telling me what he was looking for, and then I took the lead. This was very good training. Not only was it useful to see what he would look for on the map, in this terrain that is so unfamiliar to me and much more familiar to him... but it was also extremely helpful to have someone behind me trying to instill some technique discipline... making sure I have a plan, checking my map and direction frequently, keeping my eyes up and following through to the control. Mentally very tiring. It would be quite awesome to do something like this regularly. | ||
| Note | ||
| Also got a little look at one of the DX Deluxe maps today. Actually picnic'd on the map with Zan and then walked to a few control points. It looks like it would be totally wild to race there.
I'm off to Boston tomorrow. Not sure where I'll be for the two days, and I should rest for one, but I do plan on being in the woods somewhere. Wonder if there are any maps near Westport ...?

| Today was Lunsen day, with Boris, Patrick, Zan and Sandra. Everyone set out a few streamers for a short loop and then we "ran" (walked, in my case) other people's loops. I managed to successfully hang my two streamers in the right place, but that's mostly because Boris was kind enough to give me cairns as control features. ;-)
Unfortunately, I was tired and perhaps very hungry and was not able to concentrate well, even while walking. It was very good to get out on this map (another face to the name!) but I think I might need several dozen more visits before I'd feel comfortable. I can't imagine night-o there!

| shoes: Integrators (orange) | ||
| Boris was in charge of his club's training tonight and had decided to play swamp football. Somewhere along the process of trying to procure a soccer ball he realized that while he didn't have one of those, he did have a football (aka pigskin). So, Swedes be damned, American football it was.
We got out to the swamp and Boris attempted to explain the rules in Swedish. I think they mostly understood (but I didn't). We started playing, more or less the way it's supposed to be done (which was funny enough), but that didn't last much more than a touchdown. These guys wanted some real training, so it soon degenerated into something resembling two team Smear the Queer. Play didn't stop, which meant tackles turned into 6 person coed mud-wrestling until someone could wrest the ball away. It was quite an experience. I imagine if someone were to predict what would happen if you handed a bunch of Swedish orienteers an American football in a swamp, that's pretty much it. But that doesn't mean it's not still hilarious. Patrick lost his shoe in the mire and it took him 15 minutes to find it. I thought that was funny, but then I ended up with a face-full of swamp mud, so I guess he got the last laugh. Just for the record, running through a swamp is very tiring. And it's been a long time since I've been so nasty gross in an O suit. But I'd definitely do it again!

| My splits from Venla. Shows pretty clearly that I was pretty god awful in the beginning. I think I have two choices - decide to care about mass starts and practice them... or never run the first leg of a relay ever again.
And my splits from the WC qual. I'm actually not last on more legs than I am last. Neat. But not so much on the final. I want to see people's routes!

| A little training on Nåsten with Suzanne. A nice easy intro - it was actually quite fun! And it's good to finally put a name to the face.
First did a short little map hike loop, started walking with Zan, then I tried running each of the short legs and met her there for control location confirmation. Then I did a few slightly longer legs. Fun stuff. And easy to get off the line if you're not looking in front of you on the map and in the terrain - a most important skill, and one that I certainly need to work on to make automatic. The bike ride to and from was quite a bit more arduous than one would expect. Or maybe not if one were to see the bike.

| First leg of the Venla relay. Royally screwed up the first control, was 821st or thereabouts at the first radio control. Spent the rest of the course passing people and progressively orienteering better. Ended in 691st, setting up Team DVOA for some more increases. ;-)
The navigation was fun, not nearly as difficult as the stuff we saw earlier in the week... but quite different because of all the people and trails. The rest of Team DVOA is gone now, but I think they may have succeeded in converting me permanently.

I think my legs would have been better off with rest, but it's nice to get in more practice. I took it really easy, but after 2 races and 2 model maps stints yesterday my legs feel pretty used.
Running the first leg for Team DVOA Venla tomorrow. Wuhu! I gather there's some way to watch/keep track from home. I have friends who don't have any clue what I'm actually doing over here in Finland, so it might be nice to give them an idiot-proof link to follow along. Any help?

| First World Cup wrap-up:
I'm obviously happy with my runs, since my goal was just to finish them and have fun, hopefully learning from the experience. I'm very surprised that I never felt nervous at all. That's nice, but maybe some nerves would be beneficial. For the qual I was really pleased with my flow, though there is some room for improvement. Mostly it's speed, and some route choice. For the final I was definitely not at the same level. I could not keep up with my running speed, not with route choice decisions nor with actual continual navigation. It's a miracle I was able to go as fast as I did and not screw something up royally. There's a lot of gain to be made on a course like this, so it's a good point for improvement. Time behind the winner in the qual (~43%, I think... is my math right?) was much better than I could have hoped for. WRE points for the final are better than I've ever earned, though still not very high... Okay, time to go away again.

| Warming up for the qualification race. The staging area was basically a small patch of gravel next to what appeared to be the local illegal dumping grounds. | WC Sprint qualification race. I met both of my goals... but not without a bit of drama.
First, about the course and my run. It was mostly urban, lots of controls and quick map reading, very fun overall (goal #1 was to have fun). I felt very good orienteering, I stayed focused and read very well on the run. I wasn't clean, I'm sure I lost several seconds in many places, but it was a solid run (goal #2 was to have a run I could be proud of). Things were going well for me... then I looked at my Emit brick around control 14 and noticed that I was one split behind. I will not transcribe the thoughts that went through my head immediately. Needless to say, I had a quick moment of panic. But I knew that I had punched each control well and that the pin pricks would show through on the paper and there was nothing else to do just then. I put it past me and finished the course fine. At the finish I downloaded and I got the dreaded "come this way". They said I had missed a control, number 10, and showed it to me on the map. The spectator control, at the corner of a building, which I had most definitely punched. They then checked the paper and determined that I had *not* punched it. Obviously I was pretty upset because not only was I certain that I had punched it, but I knew that the entire North American cheering section could vouch for me but that that would mean squat in the rulebooks. I moped over to the crowd and Vadim demonstrates that he captured my punch on camera. [Photo should be inserted here sometime...] I shrug, because I know it's not going to get me reinstated. But he insists and shows his picture to the fancy IOF official and all the important people huddle and consult rule books and say "Nope, your sorry ass is disqualified." Only they said it in Finnish so this is a loose translation, at best. I continue to mope until I have an idea - I find someone else who ran the W3 course and look at her paper card. She seems to be missing the same prick, even though she clearly punched (she had a split). So we take it back to the officials and they insist that they see a teeny tiny little point on her paper. She says she doesn't, and if it was there it was pretty damn hard to see. My argument was that there may have been something wrong with the mechanical backup at the control, but they seemed to be afraid of the idea and I stayed DQ'd. So I mope back over to the spectator control to see if I can get a look at the damn thing from a distance. While we're there one of the officials comes over and tells us that I have been reinstated - the looked at the paper again and could see it. I'm happy again and stay so for a while, checking the results board for my time. About 30 minutes of this and they still hadn't changed me from DQ. I investigate and it turns out that when they told me that I had been reinstated they were just lying. In actuality it was a British runner who had been reinstated (same problem, different control) and the official got us mixed up. I can see how "USA" and "Great Britain" might look the same on the back of a uniform, so I forgive him. I'm DQ'd once again, though of course since I had never been reinstated in the first place it was only "again" in my mind. While explaining the rules to me (again) they pulled out my paper punch to show me that there's no prick. They say, "don't worry, you can still run the B final." And I say, "I don't care about the B final, I just want a finish time." I ask to see my paper punch and point out a faint prick. One of the young officials takes a look (squinting) and says, "Yes, it's there, and it's in the right place." This seems to have prompted the head official to look a little more carefully and, eventually, concede that there was a faint prick. Imagine that, evidence that I punched a control that no one argues I punched! Justice at last. I have a finish time. Phew. This whole thing took place over perhaps an hour, so it was a bit of a rollercoaster. I'm glad it happened today. Now I've got my international race horror story out of the way. ;-)

I felt much more in my element on that urban terrain... though of course I have a history of running circles around buildings and getting stuck behind uncrossables, so it's still not perfect. ;-)
Not nervous yet. Probably because I can't help but think that this is some sort of joke we're playing on the IOF... As in, "Teehee, look who we sent to compete!" (I'm kidding... mostly.) Picked up Chris today in Tampere, so now we're 6. Veronica continues to be our best orienteer.

| Clem and Dasha abandoned us for Sweden, but Vadim and Veronica joined us from Lithuania, so we are still 5. Training on a map not too far from our hotel today. First time on a Finnish map and I think I'm in deep doo-doo. I couldn't find shit. (Er, I guess I can't be deep in it if I can't find it, but you know what I mean.)
Okay, so I did find a few controls. But not without a lot of trouble. The first one was pretty simple and I could go straight and read all (the few) features and found it pretty quickly. I think that was a bad start because then I tried that technique on the next few and it failed miserably. Things I learned today: -there are only subtle differences between bare rock and knoll -there are only subtle differences between cliff and sloped rock -there are only subtle differences between white and marsh -there are only subtle differences between white and bare rock The take home lesson? Simplify and use contours and big features (large marshes and ponds, mostly) as much as possible. Duh. I think NOT using my magnifier is a better idea, even though then I can't really read on the run. It forces me to look at the bigger picture AND to slow down to read... which I should be doing anyway. I should note that Jagge set up the training for us, which was very nice. I think it was excellent training, and I wouldn't have it any other way, personal suckage included. We all decided that we wanted another crack at this before heading north tomorrow. And then I should probably start mentally preparing for that World Cup race thing that I'm supposed to run on Thursday.

| So Sandy and Tom are very convincing party-hounds. We spent the day cavorting around Reykjavik, picking up dates for the evening, splurging on fancy Icelandic drinks... you know, the usual. (Pictures to come.) After a long day of shenanigans we headed over to the geothermally heated pool just down the road from the hostel. Mostly we just sat around an enjoyed the contrast of the warm water against the 50° air, but Sandy and I did hop over to the lanes to swim some laps. Hard on the eyes, so it didn't last long, but it worked to burn off some of my $20 hamburger.
So far so good - nor more chills or fever, no puking. Wuhu!

| Cycling (road) 20:00 [2] | ||
| Ride in. Yep, it's nice at 5. Just checkin'. | ||
| Cycling (road) 22:00 [2] | ||
| Ride home. Swan gate was stupid closed, so that made the trip longer. Worst of all, it added a mile of 30mph headwind. Good thing it's a short ride.
Today was my last Indoc flight, which means that finally (finally!) I can fly without an instructor. Three years! Of course, my first instructor-less flight will have to wait a couple of weeks since my spring-o-palooza begins tomorrow.
Monday Jun 4 | ||
| Cycling (road) 20:00 [2] 4.5 mi (4:27 / mi) | ||
| Ride in. I think actual riding time is less than I think it is. Maybe I should actually time peddling time some time. Time. | ||

| Home plus an on-base errand that turned out to be completely unnecessary. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I wish they'd just give me a job. | ||

| Seabass and I met up with a couple of WOGgers that I ran into at the race Saturday for a run on the bike path. Ted is about my speed (he finished about 10s ahead of me on Sat) and Rosillo is a bit faster than Seabass. It was close to sunset so the ~93 degrees actually felt refreshing compared to earlier in the day. We didn't really have a plan and basically made stuff up as we went along. Not how I would have done a workout but it was a good chunk of hard running and that's a good thing right now.
Ran 1 mile easy all together, then Ted and I did 2 miles hard, jogged back to the other two and walked/easy for 1/2 mile, then did 1 mile hard, 1/4 easy, 1/2 hard, 1/4 easy. The hards were faster than I expected. I found myself playing what I consider a very male game - the "I'm not going to be the one to slow down first" game. I think it was an okay pace, though, not too fast.
| Running tempo (road) 27:30 [3] 3.5 mi (7:51 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Kayano XII (pink) | ||
| The faster stuff. Totally approximate all around because I forgot to charge my FR but wore it anyway and the battery died about 3 seconds before we started running. I think the first set (2 mi) was about 8 min pace, then a little faster on the 1 mile, and significantly faster on the 1/2 mile. Felt good. Especially to have someone else to help push the pace. | ||
| Other Cardio (panicking) 20 [5] | ||
| This was actually more like 20 minutes and should be sub-sub-titled "looking for passport". | ||

Sunday Jun 3 | ||
| Note | ||
| The plan today was to go hiking for a few hours in the afternoon once Seabass was recovered from her night shift. Sometime before 2pm I seem to have fallen asleep and did not wake up until I got a phone call at 6:45. Wow. I guess I needed it. A few hours of jazz and now I'm ready for bed again. Yikes.
I'm thinking Pahoehoe and Mica as kitty names, but Seabass has already gotten used to Rose and Clem so... yeah. Who knows.

| Running warm up/down (road) 5:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Kayano XII (pink) | ||
| All I managed for a warm-up because it was quite warm enough, thank you very much. No cool-down because I'm quite sure running more would have necessitated puking. | ||

| Damnit damnit damnit.
This was a great race, it's unfortunate that it involved such shitty running on my part. It was not nearly as hot as expected - about 93 at the start, but that's still pretty warm. So I drank perhaps a little too much liquid a wee bit too close to the start. I actually had a good start, for once. At least as far as not gunning it from the gun. After that I guess I went a bit crazy. Paced myself well and checked my watch for speed after about a 1/4 mile - 7:25, perfectly reasonable. I decided to just hold that effort and not look at the watch again until the mile marker. I didn't take into account the hill (small incline, really) at the beginning of the course and I ended up running something like a 7:05 for the first mile. Felt pretty fast but I figured it was still a salvageable race. I started fading soon after and then the water consumption gods got their revenge and the stitch set in. Close to 8 minutes for mile 2 and just over for mile 3. Nothing left for the finish (50 sec) and I almost puked in the bushes in the plaza. I obviously need to try running a 5k where I forget about the time and really start easier. Probably end up being much faster. On the bright side, very cool event. Inaugural "Meet me Downtown" race, part of an effort to revitalize downtown Tucson. Sat evening race through downtown, where no one ever goes. Finish in the plaza with free food and live band followed by the awards ceremony in the Fox theater... followed by a free movie viewing. It's too bad it's such a hassle to put on races downtown because this would make a great monthly event. Saw yet another person that I recognized from 4+ years ago, which is the second in three days. The trend continues. Met up with some friendly WOGgers for the movie. Got a Club Congress glass for coming in 3rd in my age group. Too bad they messed up and I was actually 4th. Some schmuck missed out on free stuff.

| Cycling (road) 20:00 [2] 4.5 mi (4:27 / mi) | ||
| Ride in. Very tired. Stayed out about 3 hours longer than I had planned last night.
Wore a white shirt. Different gate guard.

| So there's a drive-in movie theater in Tucson. I just realized that I live within walking distance. I felt excitement. And then felt stupid for feeling excited about the thought of being able to walk to a drive-in movie theater. | ||
