Running long 1:56:00 [3] 9.0 mi (12:54 / mi) +250m 7:22 / km
shoes: Asics Trail Attack III
Early morning run at Sabino Canyon. Today was the re-opening day for the Phoneline Trail, washed out in the massive debris flow ("landslide") last year. I started before sunrise in order to beat the sun and the crowds. It worked - I was in the shade almost the entire time and there were only a few other runners on the way up. Lots more hikers as I came back down.

The trail goes along the east wall of the canyon, more or less contouring once you get up a few hundred feet. It's pretty sweet, I can see why it's a favorite. I guess all the other runners ran up the trail, which ends at the top of the road that follows the stream, and run the road back to the parking lot. No, thanks. If you're going to drive over there, why run on the road? (I may eat my words at some point, simply because it's considered a classic road run... but still.)

I couldn't find any of the hand-holder thingies for my water bottles so I just went without, figuring it was cool enough (68 when I started) that I would be fine for two hours. I was, but I think I would have enjoyed the run down more had I had some nice cool sips of water. I might invest in one of those ridiculous looking mini-squeeze bottle things.

On the way up I passed a small group that had started running just a couple of minutes before I had. As I passed by, one woman said, "See, I want to be like that." I don't think I've ever heard anyone say they wanted to be able to run like me, so that was certainly a feel-good moment.

Finished in time to meet seabass for breakfast after her shift. We debated over which one of us had more right to complain about tired legs. :-)

Scouting out Box Canyon for this month's meet. Box Canyon is in the Santa Rita foothills, not too far from our Kentucky Camp/Greaterville maps, site of the Feb A-meet, which will be really fun (hint, hint). It was totally gorgeous out there today, temperature was divine (76° on the watch as I left) and the grass was green. Of course, the grass is one reason our A-meet is in the winter and not the fall - those in the northeast may have FDFs, but we have FGSs. Ouch.

Got some ideas for courses and good legs. This map is very good, unlike Bear Wallow, is almost all open or lightly wooded, and has lots of contour detail and few trails... which means endless possibilities for courses. Sort of the opposite problem as last time, and I could see spending way too much time on this. Or I could just set a score-o and be done with it.

Spooked a couple of white-tailed deer out of a steep valley and a widdle bunny wabbit that I almost stepped on. Also found the beef critters to be rather more intimidating than usual, especially when they managed to surround me and give me the evil glare.

Had trouble with the contacts today. Managed - with a lot of effort - to get the right one in, but then couldn't get the left in. So I gave up and wore glasses. Bummer.

I Capture the Castle (0)

Haven't been rating too many movies lately because I was busy with a mini-project (or at least that's what it seemed like) of watching all five seasons of Upstairs, Downstairs, one episode at a time. Okay, sometimes I'd watch two in a row on a weekend. I figure that's like ~45 movies I haven't watched instead. ;-) In any case, even though it's a tv show I have to rate it, as it's almost like one really long movie:

Upstairs, Downstairs (1)

and that goes for every episode except one, which only gets a zero because I'm sappy.

Morning "PT". I had thought it would be nice to swim, since we were meeting at the gym, but then I realized that that would require me to take out my contacts and most likey put them back in again afterwards. I'm just not there yet. So I went for a run instead. Ran around the 1.5 mile loop by the golf course to check it out. I mean, if you like that kind of thing I guess it's nice.

We had three new people today. Two of them, independent newcomers, were Ukrainian. What are the odds?
Note
Okay, so I just did a quick lookie at the stats so far for the USOF Survey and noticed that there are more responses from Kentucky than there are from Massachusetts or Pennsylvania. Now, I really appreciate the overwhelming participation numbers from Kentucky orienteers... but I don't think I've ever met an orienteer from Kentucky. And I know lots and lots of orienteers in MA and PA. Sheesh.

Night run around the golf course with Seabass. We did 4 pickups towards the end, but otherwise easy Seabass pace the whole way. I felt pretty awful because I ate more than a sensible handful of kettle corn early today and my stomach was staging a coup.

Dark out, but with a great moon. Mid-80s. And dry. Very dry.

WoG. Very nice to go when it's in the 80s instead of 90s. We did a stadium loop to warmup and then ran the "hill" loop for 25 minutes. Now, the Tucson area has more than its fair share of big mountains and even a few significant and prominent hills right in the city. But Reid Park is not blessed with anything like that. The "hill" is really a lump a few meters high. But we run up and down all four sides of it (if you imagine it's square...) and then run a lap around the pond. I think the whole circuit is about a half mile. We did this for 25 minutes, though I went longer to finish up my 6th loop. The hill, though short, is certainly steeper than most roads and is grass, making it a nice little surging lump for O.

Had to jet out as soon as I finished my last loop to get to the TSN board meeting...
Strength/Core 5:00 [1]
Stretching, pushups, situps, etc.
Note
So, once again I find myself as a last-minute course setter for a local meet just so that it won't be canceled. I don't think this is a good habit to make, nor is it really fun, nor does it really address the issue of why we have such an issue with getting course setters and meet directors... not to mention pretty piss poor turnout most of the time. I'm sure there are really good ideas out there for club development, and I'm sure I've even heard some of these ideas from other people before, but I don't know what to suggest. It just seems like there is so much work to do to make the club really active (or at least back to being able to run 12 meets a year without multiple cancellations) and no one knows where to start. It is very frustrating.

I do have some ideas - I really think we should run a lot of low-key, city meets. Street-O, Park-O, sprints, whatever. Easy to get to, easy to set, appealing to, oh, I don't know, maybe runners or other athletes. I'm perfectly willing to do this, but there is some resistance. Anyway, I have to eat dinner and am liable to write for a long time if I keep going now, so I'll stop.

Ride in, with a not-so-brief stop at the optometry clinic. Rode back to the squadron with my glasses in my pocket and these things in my eyes that make me see better.
Cycling (road) 20:00 [2]
Ride home. It wasn't hot! I likey.

First day with contacts was fine, and I was looking forward to going for a little run this afternoon with some kind of map to see how running and reading would go... I felt tired all day (no kidding) but the decision point was on the ride home when I actually felt woozy. And then I almost fell over in the shower. I think it's safe to say that the 1.5 weeks of inadequate sleep has caught up to me and I should take it easy and sleep a lot tonight, since I have the chance!

More on the contacts - the fit is great and visual acuity of the left eye is stellar. Right eye is supposedly 20/20 but a fuzzy 20/20 at best. I guess this is an astigmatism issue, with the lenses only coming in 10° increments for the axis correction (or whatever, I'm sort of lost on terminology here) and my axis in that eye is 96°... so I've got a 90° in now and am going to try a 100° next to see if it's less fuzzy. As far as wear goes, I can get them out okay but I'm going to have to get up a bit earlier tomorrow to make sure I have time to get them in. :-) I think I've done enough poking of my finger in my eye for today...

Leg 4 of the DVOA Chick Team (12 pts). Good enough to maintain the second place position that we held when Sandy handed off to me.

I'm not sure what took me so long, though. I felt pretty clean through the woods. Bobbled the first two of the southern (open) loop, but that's not minutes worth of time. I guess I was just being careful and deliberate and so, even though I didn't make mistakes, I was moving slowly enough and stopping enough to add up to a slower run than I would have anticipated...

There was a little bit of excitement waiting for Sandy F to come in, as she left in second place behind HVO but had Jeff S from a NEOC team chasing her down. At the spectator control we saw Jeff come through, then Sandy... so we were excited that Sandy had passed the leader but then hoping that Jeff would screw up the last loop to give me a shot against Kristin Hall. ;-)

Jeff came in about 10 minutes before Sandy and I lost another ~9 minutes to Kristin on the last leg so it wasn't even close, but it was fun!

Overall this was a great meet - the organization was great, the courses were really fun, and most of all the atmosphere was very spectator and socializing-friendly. PG's announcing added a lot to the environment and I think think he may actually have a career in professional orienteering announcing in his future.

Event: Sprint Series Final & US Relay Champs

Running warm up/down (terrain) 5:00 [1]
shoes: Integrators (orange)
Warming up before the first sprint. Not as much of a warm up as perhaps I should have had. :-)

Trip to CT was uneventful but long. Oh, actually, the was one thing worth mentioning, that being that Ralph Nader was on our flight to BDL. At least, I'm pretty sure it was him. He was sitting in a very safe row (the final clue) reading the Wall Street Journal and making notes on it. When we landed he ran off before I had a chance to get a closer look or attempt to talk to him.

Orienteering race 22:00 [4] *** 2.22 km (9:55 / km) +51m 8:53 / km
15c shoes: Integrators (orange)
First sprint of the sprint series final. Pretty much a disaster for me, not one big goof but lots of big (in sprint terms) mistakes.

I was pretty confused on the first control, I had a lot of trouble adjusting to the scale. At least I didn't blow by it, it just took me a long time - the person who started 30s behind me caught me, and it probably should have taken more than a minute. Then, on the way to two I was stung twice by whatever it was out there (bees? wasps?) that was doing all the stinging. I wish I could blame the stings on my lack of concentration for 2 (I missed a trail junction) but really I just wasn't reading the map well.

Managed okay on 3, 4, and 5 but made up for it by totally blowing by 6 and taking a while to realize where I was. Serious scale issues, which continued into 7. Got it together for basically the rest of the course, but that doesn't mean it felt great - just adequate.
Orienteering race 18:55 [4] *** 2.33 km (8:07 / km) +52m 7:18 / km
13c shoes: Integrators (orange)
Second sprint, which went much, much better than the first. I was into the map and the scale and the running was faster with more open woods. Bobbled the first one and ran fine from there.
Orienteering race 20:38 [4] *** 3.15 km (6:33 / km) +33m 6:13 / km
21c shoes: Integrators (orange)
"All comers" sprint final. I didn't have enough points to run in the 6-woman final (I only had 3 sprints going into today) but I definitely didn't want to miss out on this course, especially after watching the top men and women. (Okay, so I had a slight advantage because of that :-).

This went quite well, though of course it was the fastest of the three courses. I was a little confused on 17 (the first of the last loop), not realizing that the control was *in* the green stuff (like the files *in the computer*).

The most excellent announcer didn't seem to like my shoe but claimed that my time would have been fast enough for 4th in the actual final, which is nice to know. Next time I'll need to have the full set of sprints so that I can actually run the real final!

Get the day off today so last night I figured I'd go to bed early and get up early to go for a ride. Going to bed early was nooo problem, but not so much on the getting up early part. Didn't get up until 8 and slothed around until 9, which meant I had less time to ride (had to pick Seabass up at 11:30ish) and that I had to slather on lots of sunblock.

Headed out towards Colossal Cave... ridiculous headwind on the way out (upish), which meant coming back was great. Didn't actually get very far because Seabass called just before 10 to say she was already done! Whoops, quick spin back home.

While stopped at a light some dude in an SUV pulled up next to me and said, "Clipless sandals! Cool!" and then turned. Weird.
Running (dirt/grass) 49:00 5.75 mi (8:31 / mi)

A very good WOG tonight. The agenda:

While stretching we went around the circle sharing our name and our approximate jogging pace. Then we ran 1 lap to loosen up, followed by 2 laps (1 mile) at "jogging" pace, so Randy could time us and see if we were lying. ;-) I ran about 8:40, which is the fast end of jogging for me, and I think within the "9-ish" answer that I gave.

Then 2 strides followed by 1 mile tempo (I did about 7:50) and 2 more strides followed by 1 mile fast/5k-pace (I did 7:31). Then some more fun, a 4 leg loop across the outfields going fast, faster, fastest, slow, followed by 4 strides...Then just some easy cool down time.

I probably shouldn't ride on WOG days, at least until I become superhuman. It's more important to be well rested for the running, and I could definitely feel the bike in my legs today.

Supposedly still in the 90s but it sure didn't feel like it. We also had a glorious Tucson sunset! I'm pretty sure there are people on AP who would call this whole workout, "so fine!"
Strength/Core warm up/down 16:00 [1]
Stretching and stuff (crunches, plank, pushups) before, plus just stretching after.

Ride over was brisk because I was running late... but the ride home was über chill.

Morning run at Red Rock Canyon. Spent the night in Las Vegas and people will be pleased to know that I did a little more sight-seeing this time, though it was sort of curtailed when I discovered the arcade in NYNY and sort of stayed there for a while. What can I say? I'd rather blow some cash at an arcade than a casino...

Run was very nice, cool out up there and sun behind rocks or clouds the whole time. Much cooler trail than the last time I went, even though I didn't have time to do the whole loop that I wanted to do. Next time.

Back to Tucson today, thank goodness.

I ran by the river first, along River St., then back up and over to Bull St and down to Forsynth park. Looped around there and came back up a different street back to the hotel. Saw a live band, a bagpiper, and a steel drummer, amongst other things. Not nearly as hot and humid as I thought it would, thankfully. We walked to the bike path, ran a lap, then walked home, because that's what Seabass likes to do, all at Seabass pace. That was fine with me, no arguing that this is certainly recovery pace.

Saguaro National Park Labor Day Run - 8 mi
Running race (road) 1:16:26 [3] 8.0 mi (9:32 / mi) +300m 5:19 / km
ahr:187 max:198 weight:146lbs shoes: Kayano XII (pink)
Saguaro National Park Labor Day Run 8 miler. This is the Tucson running season opener... and thus a kick in the butt for me. The course is considered the toughest road course in Tucson, and it's not like it's exactly chilly by Labor Day, so I thought that made Tucsonans batshit crazy. Either that or really smart since you get the worst one over when you're all out of shape and don't expect much anyway. :-)

I had no expectations today, sort of treated it like a tough long run. Okay, I'm kind of lying. I had no goals or anything but I kind of thought that I'd be able to run 72 given the wisdom that middle-of-the-packers run about 1 min/mi slower on this course than they would on a flat course, and I figured I could do 8's on a flat course without too much trouble. Either I'm wrong or I just didn't run the hills aggressively enough for a real race effort. Or both. I do feel very slow right now.

The course is actually a scenic road in Saguaro NP East. Pretty awesome scenery, too bad the sun was in my eyes half the time. It starts off with a rolling downhill trend for the first ~2.5 miles, really quite fun because I was fresh and each little hill gave you some more downhill. Then there's a torturous flat section that made me want to poke my eyes out with a cactus. Thankfully, the big climb starts at ~3.5 miles at a ~7% grade and goes and goes. Only thankful about that because it least that's not boring. And by mile 4 you're not facing the sun anymore!

I don't really have any more to write about it. It was fun and I can see why knowing the course would definitely help for racing it. I kept expecting to pass people as the course went on because it seemed like a lot of people started really fast and were huffing and puffing and wheezing as they passed me, but I think really most of them were pretty fast. There are a lot of fast people here. That should be good motivation to race against the same people a lot.

Conclusion - a good holiday workout. And I'll be a lot faster next year... as long as I go run a lot of hills...

Tia won in 51:59, Jessica 2nd in 54:56. Had Sheryl in sight most of the way but she finished about 1.5 min ahead. 12th in age group, 286th overall.

Afternoon run on the Green Mtn trail in the Catalinas. Lovely trail, goes basically up upper Bear Canyon. Bit of a storm brewing overhead and I did get a bit of rain. I guess I scared Seabass as we parted early on when I said, "Be careful of the canyon and flash floods." She didn't stay out long, especially once it started raining.

Didn't have much oomph today, not surprisingly, had to hike a bunch of the steeper parts. Pooh. Took an awesome spill on the granite gravel on the way down, like a bad slide into second base. Good scrapes, not too much blood, though.

Today I learned that my cell phone fits in my key pocket, at least the one in my Asics shorts. Crazy! I forgot to wear a watch and needed a way to know when to turn around, so I just set the alarm on the phone for 30 minutes and stuffed it in the pocket. Not a bad solution, might do that to carry it some other time.

Distance a total guess.
